Steve Bannon sounds alarm over faltering Trump campaign
by Rob Crilly, White House Correspondent | | June 26, 2020 12:00 AM
4-5 minutes

Among the allies urging the Trump campaign to change tack or risk defeat is someone who knows a thing or two about winning populist elections.

Former White House chief strategist and Trump 2016 campaign chief Steve Bannon has raised the alarm this week over a faltering campaign, speaking out publicly and privately for an end to a rally-based strategy, leaving Trump insiders to wonder whether he is maneuvering for a return to influence.

After Saturday’s disastrous rally in Tulsa, Bannon demanded that the reelection effort concentrates on amplifying action taken by the president in office and is urging other conservative commentators to go on the attack to force a shake-up, according to multiple sources.

“He is trying to get conservative commentators to go negative on the campaign so that they wake up and realize they are in bad shape before it is too late to do anything,” said a former White House official.

The Tulsa rally was billed as a chance to reset the campaign, getting President Trump back in front of his supporters and on the attack against presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Instead, coverage was dominated by empty seats and news that members of the Trump campaign had tested positive for COVID-19.

New polls brought fresh gloom. A New York Times/Siena College poll showed Biden picking up support in key demographic groups and that more than 60% of respondents disapproved of Trump’s stance on race relations after the death of George Floyd in police custody.

The result is a campaign under growing pressure to reverse the tide.

Publicly, campaign officials are sanguine. They dismiss polls as missing the real picture and say that everything can change in the four and a half months before the election.

However, senior Republicans have begun to express their concern at a campaign that is not reading the signs.

This week, Bannon offered his solution during an appearance on the John Fredericks Radio show.

“He’s the president of the United States,” he said. “He’s not a candidate. You act like president of the United States, you take action like the president of the United States, you govern like you are president of the United States, you are going to be reelected.”

He applauded Trump’s visit to the border wall in Arizona as the sort of event that would resonate with voters.

The campaign, he said, should be focused on the president as a law-and-order leader who created jobs and understands the threat from China.

“We don’t need rallies,” he said. “We need the president five days a week out there doing those types of things, showing people he as president is the driver of action.”

Bannon left the White House in August 2017 after Trump expressed displeasure at his high media profile and amid reports that he clashed with Jared Kushner.

Last year, he set up the Bannon WarRoom podcast to cover Trump’s impeachment, a project which has since expanded to take in the coronavirus pandemic and built a huge online audience.

Insiders believe his influence is on the up after Jason Miller, a co-host of the podcast, took up a senior position with the reelection effort.

The result is developing into a tussle for control of a misfiring campaign, pitting Bannon against his old White House nemesis Kushner.

“Of course Steve’s view is that he is the man to fix it all, but after Saturday’s disaster, it is clear that things can’t go on like this,” said a Trump World insider.

A veteran of the 2016 campaign said the White House and the campaign needed to hear the message.

“You can’t just say fake news, fake polls,” he said. “We need to fix it.”

Miller dismissed any idea that Bannon had a hotline into the campaign.

"I hear Steve's voice over the airwaves every day,” he said. “Like millions of Americans, I'm a daily listener to WarRoom: Pandemic, which airs at 10 a.m., and I sometimes also watch the 11 p.m. replay on Newsmax or download the podcast."

Bannon did not respond to a request for comment.

I agree that the campaign needs to be extra careful, and that conditions have changed from 2016. But how can we know that "the bad signs" everyone talks about aren't complete fabrications. The left and media (but I repeat myself) WANT everyone to think Trump is on his last leg.

Of course, it never hurts to fight as if you are. Better that than playing it smug and complacent.

Well let's see. He's not getting the support he needs for a crack down on anarchists from the military (think Mille and Mattis), no support from dem governors and sketchy support from the Republicans governors. Local city governments just stand and watch the mayham and terror brought to their cities large and small. The American people are frightened because the people who were elected to protect us are mute. Just a thought: If Trump could somehow organize this fear into action would that help unite and improve his base's moral? Perhaps a local, state, national civil defense organization. This at least is a step for the lack of organization of patriots/deplorables now.

I guess I'm not understand how Saturday's rally was disastrous. So the venue was not filled to the rafters. 7.3 million viewers on television is nothing to ignore, especially since we are supposedly in the middle of a pandemic and there were threats of physical violence to rally goers.

To be successful in deconstructing an insurrection is the ability to follow the money, to be able to prove interconnectivity between different groups, And be able to make a very public case about it as arrests begin. In this case, the DOJ has either failed on purpose or failed due to incompetence. The mere fact the the Attorney General refuses to arrest those that began a coup attempt against an elected official speaks volumes. The connections between BLM, Antifa, Sunrise, and the Democratic Party are there, once you have the funds transfers between any two or three you have conspiracy. It would be easy to wreck this new movement immediately and come out a hero, and really save the free world. Trump has either surrendered, or has lost focus, either way, the blue states now control who count the votes, and every state in under some form of emergency powers, so going into November, it is going to be a crap show all the way through.

Clutching my pearls, I'll say this.

Trump isn't a slam dunk.

4 years of attacks may have had an effect of the average uninformed voter and, perhaps Trump, himself.
He's not been the same guy since the plandemic and revolution.

Maybe he's playing 413 dimension chess or something.

I've never considered him the savior but he, and us, are the only ones holding back the hordes that will be here if he loses

Is the campaign faltering? Biden said 120 million Americans died of Covid which is just the latest of his daily gaffes. If he ever does a debate with Trump he will be drooling all over himself. The only ’evidence’ offered are the polls which all showed Hillary winning by double digits in 2016. I don‘t know a single Biden supporter who will admit to it but I know a lot of Trump supporters.

Between the polls and media talking heads this is a giant psyop and none of us here should fall for it. Americans have seen rioting, looting and parts of cities taken over with threats to defund the police. They have seen statues being torn down and normalcy being turned on it‘s head. And they don’t blame Trump for the Covid or resulting economic disruptions. I have my problems with Trump as many others do but we simply can’t put a man with dementia and his vp Marxist nomination in power.

The swing vote is not going to cast their ballots for the overturning of what is left of a constitutional Republic. A lot of people wouldn’t admit voting for Trump in 2016 and with the environment today most people if asked will say they don’t support him as they are fearful of the blowback but they will vote for him at the polls in November.

From posts on several boards, the tone is increasingly like it was before Trump was elected, pundits and media not giving him a chance to win, quoting polls showing him losing.

Hitlery had it one, didn't she?

Other than the nation is doomed is Trump is not elected, I am looking forward to seeing all those heads exploded.

The only way Biden could win is massive voter fraud that is not caught, which could happen. If that happens, get your bags of popcorn, the show would be about to begin.

A guaranteed way for Trump to obtain some independent voters: By executive order, remove marijuana from the list of Schedule One drugs and not reclassify it at all. This would be a huge boost to the legal weed industry, especially because banks would then take deposits from legal weed purveyors. This would also take some wind out of the Democrats' sails.

Really... what difference does it make who wins? This country is falling into the hands of militant commies, and gang lords. It's obvious to anyone with an ear or eye.

The pass few weeks have shown me that the Republicans aren't going to save this country. Trump without the support of the Republicans is helpless. Executive orders can only go so far before they become edicts by the acting king in charge.

When the state governors, city mayors, and the police, fail to stop riots and looting. Because a felon criminal gets killed. When they let criminals out of jail to protect them from a virus and refuse to jail people committing open in your face crimes, there is nothing to do but prepare yourself for eventual civil warfare. Even it it calms down now the violence is going to resurface.

When people all over the world are forced to hide and be regulated by their governments because there is a sickness about. Instead of allowing the healthy to go about their normal lives.
When government tell businesses how they can be opened or not. Depending if they are "essential" or not. ( wouldn't a thriving business be essential if it was in fact in business?)

It's a sign that the world has been infected by a sickness for sure. The sickness is insanity.

And I don't completely trust Trump - but a sure way to be misled is to listen to the MSM as if they had a corner on the truth market. The MSM can call black white and vice versa but that does not make it so.

But do you really think he picks up voters at these rallies? They're his most ardent supporters that go to them.
He needs the expand his base, and I don't think the rallies do that.
But what do I know.

You are exactly correct Infoscout !!!

We are in much deeper doo doo than many want to admit !!!

The enemy that we can see, to our front is formidable, and bad enough !!!! What is extremely dangerous is the enemy in our midst, that many do not see, and falsely trust !!!!! And when someone points them out, many think the one pointing out the traitor is the bad guy !!! Those people better pull their heads out of their rear ends, open there eyes, and face reality. This is NOT a TV show !!! They must realize that some, who are supposed to be on "our / patriot " side ARE NOT !!!
They are wolves in sheeps clothing !! And wise people will recognize them as such !!! As the Bible says, judge them by the fruits they bear !!!
The polling, the spewing by the talking heads are all psyops laying the groundwork for the election. Everyone should remember that the deepstate / leftists / commiecrats will control counting the votes. Like Stalin said, " voting does not matter. Those who count the votes decide everything " On election night in November, after they have cheated on massive scale, most sheep will believe it "

In January after the commiecrats have taken the WH, Senate, and retaken the house ( all fraudulently ) most sheep will believe it, and Hell on Earth with sweep across the land, like the biblical flood !!!! The dumbasses will be saying " we have to do a better job winning people to our side, and win elections in 20__ ? It will be too late !! There will be no turning back !!!

There will BE NO VOTING OUR WAY OUT OF THAT BOWL OF HELL !!!

BLOAT !!!!

Then get on your knees and pray hard & often !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I concur with multiple expressions above about MISTRUST OF BANNON. He has been corrupted by the same vanity disease which led to Bolton's fall into betrayal: "I GOT TRUMP ELECTED. I KNOW BETTER THAN MY BOSS. I SHOULD BE PRAISED AND HONORED FOR MY KEEN INSIGHT. LISTEN TO ME." It's a deadly disease.

BFD. Outside ghettos and non-STEM-department colleges, there just aren't that many people daily doobies are the defining issue of their lives.

20x as electorally powerful would be a one-time forgiveness of all student loans, ideally combined with cutting all college tuition (outside community colleges, which are generally reasonable) by 2/3. Throw in something that halves rents in pricey cities, and such an incumbent could get MAJORITIES of under-40 Dim whites.

I'd LOVE to see how you would get POTUS to cut PRIVATE COLLEGE TUITION by 60% and have it make it through the courts, since I am PRETTY SURE he has no LEGAL or Court Supportable path to that action.

Nice dictatorial try though.

You are also incorect about the effects of dropping the Schedule 1 Marijuana down to no longer scheduled at all.

There are a LOT of otherwise conservative appearing age 40 and up folks who REALLY ARE using marijuana for medical purposes. Kille the Schedule 1 status and there WILL be more as the research grows. Can't LEGALLY research it here in the US with a Sched 1 classification.

Banon trying to channel Wally Chronkeit and a` la Tet snatch defeat from the jaws of victory???

Tulsa was HUGE in terms of viewership as OPENLY measured by relevant orgs.

LAST THING I WANT is to see someone pull a Wally and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Remember (for you yutes) the Viet Cong/North Vietnamese Military pulled a HUGE attack all through South Viet Nam attacking all KINDS of cities and such, and, well, they were only MARGINALLY effective, and left a bunch of nasty pics of dead or wounded, but by ANY UNBIASED ASSESSMENT, they LOST the offensive.

Except they WON THE Propaganda/Press battle IN THE USA (where it mattered) thanks to Wally reporting it as a disaster. The North and VC did NOT win the MILITARY battle in SVN.

Historical Perspective. Something you get at about 25 years old when you integrate all them dates and treaties and battles and stuff into your OWN experience and you see ALL of that stuff happened A LONG TIME AGO.

At least that works if you have figured out how to learn.

Useful assessment - interesting that you compare Bolton's personality style to Bannon's.

Thanks for that reminder, Chuck - I recall that era of "news reporting," and the agenda-driven political shenanigans/spin put out by the media, top military/administration brass (GEN William Westmoreland, Robert McNamara, and others), BOTH political parties, and Hollywood/entertainment/music industry (Jane Fonda, and many others come to mind).

I have asked several Vietnam MI officer participants, now retired - what was Vietnam all about?

Silence.

Finally, one of the senior former brass of the group spoke up - and acknowledged that he really did not know - others around that big table ALL nodded in agreement.

Control of covert illicit deep state drug smuggling/funding sources (unaccountable to Congressional approval/knowledge) coming out of the Golden Triangle area, or, to stop the spread of communism in Asia, or, to spend J6P's blood and treasure on the western military industrial complex - you decide.
