darn coons

They've killed many a chicken for me. You can't ever kill them all. Sometimes you get over run with them. What I said in the other post was the buzzards here start waiting in the mornings to be fed like pets. They, the remains don't lay around long enough to stink. I hate raccoons and opossums. I lost 600lbs of horse feed to them one time. They crap all over what they don't destroy. They dismembered baby ducks of mine one time. I hold a grudge, I blame every raccoon for all that destruction and try to stop anymore from happening.

I just lost 7 of my favorite chickens last night to the little a$$holes. I pulled my lgd in because the wind was pulling limbs down and although he has a safe structure, I cant force him to stay off patrol at night. This weekend the foxpro comes out

We have tons of them. Keeps me occupied getting rid of them. Marshmallows in a live trap works every time and I don't catch the barn cats. I then carry the trap about 30 feet away and use a 12 gauge. Quick kill and doesn't hurt the trap. I then carry the trap down to the woods, get the coon out, and toss him back into the wild.

Coon hunting with dogs is a big deal up here. Lots of folks into that sport. Pretty good eating, too, before they were such a big carrier of rabies. Wouldn't recommend that any more.

I don't even worry about prime fur anymore. Just seek and destroy before the little hellions can kill my chickens or shred my pups.
You literally can not pay our local fur buyer to take coon, XXXL prime or not. No market for it. A prime 'yote is still worth the effort though.

The paw trap we use is the Z-trap and it came with a white cap, which fits in the top of the tube and has a ring handle on it. Only raccoons have the dexterity and smarts to pull the cap out by the ring to get at the bait. This keeps out mice and other things that might stick a paw down the tube to grab the bait. We have caught at least two dozen raccoons with this trap and only raccoons.

22 LR isn't as messy

I’ve often thought that if I could domesticate them, and they having thumbs, I could teach them to pull weeds and help rake with a tiny customized rake.

They would be rewarded greatly. V

dad was a tree trimmer back in my youth

each spring he would bring back a baby coon

we raised them

they were cute/fun til they got bigger

they would eat your ears when on your shoulder

we also had pet skunks

non smelly

22's seem to bounce off at any distance or just piss them off. They will get their fur up and rear and scratch like a cat. Even the dogs will back off a wounded one. A well placed 30-30 or equivalent is the best solution.

They are destructive. After one of my cats, (big tough tom who never lost a fight with an cat), lost a fight to a raccoon it became my job to kill them off. To this day, I can not stay ahead of them. Every night someone new comes by after I have eradicated the old ones.

I learned that you can never get rid of them all. It made me sad

That's a shot placement error, not a lack of power.

I did learn that between the eyes works real well on possums, but does not work on raccoons. Hit them in the neck / lungs / hearts. I swear the 22LR bounces back when you shoot them in the forehead.

It can slide off without penetrating due to the shallow angles, but shots from the side or from behind will do the job.

The brain case is farther back than appearances would leave you to believe. Body shots will usually kill them but will take a while.

I prefer to stop them instantly so I can dispose of the bodies rather than have them die a slow death.

I'll give it a try.
The spring on that thing is really stiff
All I can do to compress it

Sicario, you had yours posted 4 minutes by the time I got mine in. Like minds.

Don't wreck your hands- go get yourself a set tool. Should be about ten bucks at the farm and ranch. Get more than one, you will misplace it one of these days. Ask me how I know? I like the bright painted ones that show up in the grass. How to use the set tool is at 1:42min.

I got one of those traps today that the coon sticks his paw in and can't get it out.

What do you bait them with?
I use fish flavored cat treats from the dollar store. They are small, a little bigger than a pencil eraser. I drop 3 or 4 in the bottom of the tube, making sure some are below the trigger. Our trap has a cap, so I put one treat on the cap to get the raccoon's attention. The raccoon eats the treat on the cap and then pulls off the cap to get at the rest of the treats.

The little bastages will break the spinner on a feeder and jiggle 150lbs of corn out in a night or two.

Have to build a cage around it.

I have outside cats so I'd be worried about them.
I've caught one of them several times in my live trap

Whats the old saying? " You're like a coon. What you don't tear up you shit on.". LOL! Sadly that was from my first boss when i was a teenager.

Canned mackerel was what was used to bait the traps for raccoons when I was growing up. They might also pick up an occasional opossum and once a careless fox.

tried this yesterday

the chipmonks were in there munching away

the trap has big enuf holes for the chippys to wander thru
A DP trap or a live trap?

ETA: Just read my answer above. I can honestly say I have zero experience with live traps.
