And for no good reason.
Two friends called me from my old hometown (Portsmouth) and I asked them, "WHAT IS GOING ON?" and they said that the majority black city council and majority black city government told police and all law enforcement to "stand down" and let savages destroy a monument that was erected in 1895 to honor our Confederate dead.
This was an incredibly rare monument, as it depicted all four branches of service in the Civil War. It was on the National Registry because it was considered "artistically done and historically significant."
The women of the Confederacy spent YEARS raising the money for this statue. It was their gravesite tombstone, where they could pay homage to their sons and husbands and brothers. During the Civil War, so many of these men were buried where they fell or were simply left in the battlefields to rot. This monument in Portsmouth, Virginia was a way for those grieving women to honor their fallen loved ones.
And tonight, a mob of protestors destroyed it for no good reason.
I have been in tears. This monument is the reason that I fell in love with history as a little girl. It was the center point of our little port town. And it was a thing of beauty.
