Low Solar Activity to Cause Temperatures to Plummet, Say Scientists

What happened to global warming?

The Sun is entering a period of “solar minimum” that could cause temperatures to plummet by up to 2C over 20 years and trigger a global famine, according to experts.

Solar activity has entered a deep decline with scientists saying there have already been 100 days this year where the sun has displayed zero sunspots.

NASA boffins say this means that the earth could be about to experience a new “Dalton Minimum,” the period between 1790 and 1830 which led to a severe prolonged cold snap and massive volcanic eruptions.

“This means were could be entering one of the deepest period of sunshine recession which could trigger long periods of cold, famine and other issues,” reports the Daily Star.

The Sun has now recorded two consecutive years of record setting spotlessness, being blank 77% of the time in 2019 and 76% of the time so far this year.

This means a deep solar minimum is coming which will cause temperatures to drop drastically.

This once again serves as a reminder that the Sun is by far the most influential driver of climate and makes the impact of so-called man-made climate change look tame in comparison.

How are institutions of science, academia and media that have fully committed to the notion that anthropogenic global warming will cause environmental devastation going to react when the globe starts rapidly cooling?

Meanwhile, Greta Thunberg has been noticeably quiet on the matter.

Famines from unexpected and mostly undesired changes in rainfall patterns, plant and human diseases, mass migrations, serious plagues, desperate wars to the point one side is driven out/enslaved/annihlated, that sort of thing.

They are predicting (Hah!) 2 deg C. drop. So currently, is the average temp of the Yukon Territories 2deg C lower than central Iowa? If so, that would give us some idea of the impact on crops as one thing.

Well, I have a pile of old tires out back I was saving for a project. Guess I will just go burn them now.

You will never convince someone who is Brainwashed into "It's people's fault!" that the Sun has anything to do with it.

Already had that Debate, tired of it.

Yeah, except that kind of temp drop historically tends to move rainfall around in VERY inconvenient ways for farmers. Kind of a big deal, particularly in regions that don't consistently seriously produce in ag more than they need. (Get some floods and potable water supply shortages at times, too, not good anywhere.)

About six or seven years ago here when the sun first delayed and then never really had its solar maximum I said here on the forum: "can you say Maunder Minimum boys and girls? I know you could..."

That's because long periods of low sunspots seem to go along with colder periods of weather especially in Northern Latitudes.

On the other hand, there can still be some really powerful solar flares - the Carrington Event that fried telegraph wires across North America were during the Dalton Minimum; it only takes one sunspot with one large flare headed in just the right (or wrong) place to do some serious damage.

We've been planing for solar minimum weather for several years now, which as MS says is unpredictable in terms of rain, tends towards colder, longer Winters in Europe/Northern North-America and shorter but often hotter Summers.

Volcanoes also play a role (and there were a couple of large eruptions this past year) and their dust can create an even stronger cooling trend.

No one is sure why there tends to be more volcanic activity during Solar Minimums but there is a historical link, and they play on each other when it comes to weather issues.

the solar cycles are sort of fascinating, you can read what happened in the world in the last ones to get an idea of what were facing. the earth is just doing its thing, it has warming periods then cooler ones.

i remember reading about a coming solar minimum in the 70s several authors warning it was coming and governments should teach the people and start preparing for the crop dramages and economic problems associated with the changes. then BAM all of a sudden it disappeared and all we hear is the dangers of global warming and its all our fault. ha! the dangers of global warming made no sense when you learn that the CO2 levels were much much higher on the planet before mankind started spreading and got industrial.

Are you sure about that?
No. We have to drive a wooden stake through the little Swedish girl's heart...

Actually, I hope that the reality of what is actually going to happen to the global climate gets past all the noise being flushed through that girl's head. It would be poetic if, as she matures, she turns to the cameras someday and says to the world:

"My papa wrote all my scripts. My dad is an asshole."

The dinosaurs could not survive in today's temps.

I do not think SUVs are going to cut it. We are going to have to burn more rainforests to keep the planet warm this minimum.

I know what will fix it!!!!!! Take all the money in the world and send it to the sun!!! I am sure the sun will take a payoff and work better!!!! *snicker*

Dumbass polititians will suggest something like that.

You have identified the transition between long term and short term thinking for part of the country.

There is a fair amount of thought that low sunspot activity allows more cosmic rays to impact earth, forming more clouds and blocking the sun, causing cooling. There is a parallel thought that more cosmic rays impact magma and cause it to lose viscosity and be more likely to cause volcanos to erupt. Similar thought on loosening up fault lines and earthquakes. Maybe.

If things go the way it seems to be headed, I don't know she'll be well off enough to ignore it.

There was a story over the past couple of days about La Nina coming back real soon. That would be in addition to the current GSM cooling that's been discussed around here, and now mainstream science is beginning to talk about the cooling effects of GSM openly? We're headed to a cold place, my friends.

Just throwing this in the mix:

Comets Swan and Atlas are cool, but might deliver a dangerous dusting
The space snowballs are a nice distraction, but could also be one more thing worth worrying about.

You've probably been a little too preoccupied during the tumultuous start to this year to notice that 2020 has also been a high-drama time for comets visiting the inner solar system. Right now, Comet Swan is visible to the naked eye and may grow even brighter as it rushes toward the sun over the next few weeks.

Comets like Borisov, Atlas and Swan have been a nice distraction from the coronavirus pandemic in recent months, but one scientist has warned that such spectacular space sights are also a potential threat when they start to crack up.

Comet Borisov is the first confirmed interstellar comet to visit our neighborhood. It was originally spotted last August and began to break up in early 2020 after swinging around the sun in December. About the same time, Comet Atlas brightened rapidly before breaking into pieces. Then there's Comet Swan, which passed by our planet with its nucleus intact but has a good chance of fragmenting as it races around the sun during the coming few weeks.

All this is great for skywatchers, astronomers and other space geeks, but the relationship between Earth and comets hasn't always been a cordial, arms-length affair. Just ask the dinosaurs. Many people believe the dinos were wiped out by a large comet impact that may've ignited massive fires, triggered huge tsunamis and kicked up enough particles to partially block out the sun and cool the planet.

William Napier from the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland argued in a paper first published last June that catastrophic consequences on Earth may not require a direct hit from a comet. Just drifting through the debris stream of a fragmented comet could also alter life on our planet in a major way.

"Such an encounter may have contributed to the large animal extinctions and sudden climatic cooling of 12,900 years ago, and the near-simultaneous collapse of civilizations around 2350 BC," Napier wrote in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The earlier time Napier references is a period known as the Younger Dryas, when Earth suddenly shifted from a warming trend and slipped back into an ice age. One hypothesis for the abrupt climatic reversal is that an impact from a large comet or asteroid acted out a less memorable sequel of sorts to the impact that did in the dinosaurs.

This theory, however, is controversial and not universally accepted among scientists.

so, is this june or julys disaster. and locusts. anyone know when the locusts are coming......

asking for a friend

I am not sure about the locusts, but the past three summers we’ve had a Japanese beetle battle. They are voracious eaters and love fruit trees and certain garden vegetables. In our neck of the woods, eastern Missouri, we refer to their pestilence as the Plague.

I read an article that mentioned that. They said to look for a bad hurricane season on the east coast.
