Gee.
YES it is.... live with it! That is the way we roll!

Ah, chile? I suspect that Troke (with a join date in around 1998) knows a tad bit more about how this forum REALLY rolls than you might. I'm unsure whether you were around for the purges that cost us Lynnie and Harvey, or LadyLogic or even Mutter.
I'm unsure whether you were here for Debunkies House of Trolls or the loss of CanadaSue and Brihard either.

A LITTLE respect for the elders here is a good thing.

At this point Troke can remind us about us all he chooses to. Those reminders shouldn't fall on Whitesnake deafened ears.

You’re right most likely but I ***still*** have yet to hear a single, solitary person talk about this or even act like “it’s a thing”!!
Just today at work (Veterinary office) I finally told my boss...” you need to start ordering extra antibiotics because shortages will happen from this Coronavirus, specifically Doxycycline and most everything else we use every day”...
I repeated this, again, because I thought he didn’t hear me. He literally paused for a second, then just walked away.

I’m still a little shocked.

Yeah, and I tried talking about it with my best friend today. Wouldn’t take it seriously. Said something to the effect of, “I can see how this might affect some parts of the economy like car part suppliers, but we don’t plan on buying a car anytime soon. And we don’t know any Chinese people. So thank you for your concern, but I don’t watch the news and refuse to let any negativity into my life. There is no need to have anymore discussions with me about this. If you’re troubled and feeling panicked, I suggest you talk to a pastor or your doctor.”

This was after I brought up medicine shortages, all the other supply chains, the R0 factor, and the quarantines. Whatever. I can’t save everybody. Even using the “better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it” line didn’t sink in.

I've said some hints and some out right explanations to some of my friends and they have all pretty much blown me off outside of the ones that are already preppers.

Even though this has been front and center on MSM (which I am surprised about) people can't wrap their heads around it.

Most will just panic at the last minute and pay the price.

That's the condition right before slaughter. They will be the first to knock at the door when things go sour.

Is there some reason why a couple of passes over paper money with a hot steam iron would not solve the infection problem?
That'd probably do it. Virus does not like heat.
Dr Hatfill told me PPE masks put in clothes dryer on high heat would do it, too.
So, I'm sure paper money similarly exposed would also neutralize the virus, too.

After reading 300+pages of thoughts, opinions, and ideas, I miss the wisdom & voices of so many of those elders that we have lost over the years. Wonder what they would think about our current situation? I know one thing, Father Mike would still be upstairs.

Two quick stories:

I went to the bank yesterday. The woman came out of the office with her right hand outstretched, I told her I don't shake hands during flu season. She gave me a strange smile and seemed quite off-put. She then said, oh and don't forget the virus in China, in a way/tone as if her spreading flu was as likely as spreading that disease from china. I didn't say anything. For the next 5 minutes she coughed intermittenly into her right hand, the hand she offered me to shake. I thought to myself, well, just saved myself from some cold/flu germs, good practice to start. I should have been doing this for years.

Family member was told there was a mandatory company meeting on the west coast in April. Not training, the annual rah-rah let's all get together and bond meeting. Thousands attend, all stay in the same resort hotel, eat together, share rooms, etc. Told manager they weren't comfortable flying right now and would probably skip. Manager LAUGHED and said, what are you afraid of some chinese flu? ha ha ha. That's not here, you go if you want to keep your job. I told family member not to stress over it - by April this will be sorted out one way or the other.

HD

I agree with this. Handshaking is bad practice and should be done away with.

Thing is, as I see it...none of the professionals really know WTH is going on yet. Increasingly, NOBODY that is a responsible authority/researcher believes China, and until WHO or CDC or somebody with some credibility is allowed to follow and document a few hundred of these cases from infection to resolution, nobody is really going to have a clue WTH is going on.

The professionals have a very good idea what's going on. They sure as hell aren't going to say publicly what they know. Their goal is to keep YOU from knowing what's going on, because the panic would be epic.

Psychgirl, Thanks for the report. Personally from what I have seen, do think many people have yet to take this thing seriously. And right now in this thing's infancy is when people need to take it serious. When it arrives in your community and people are being quarantined, it will be too late do think. Think hardly nobody here in this country are really being serious on this as of yet. I myself have just been sitting and watching things. But to myself can see how it is spreading and it is just a matter of time. Wishing You the Best!
Thank you. Yeah, I’m amazed because we already... get shortage notices a LOT for things we need , let alone a REAL issue coming! He’s a wonderful person to work for and I just love him but I wanted to smack him!

The coronavirus epidemic could spread to about two-thirds of the world’s population if it cannot be controlled, according to Hong Kong’s leading public health epidemiologist.

It could infect 60% of global population if unchecked

Even if the general fatality rate is as low as 1%, which Leung thinks is possible once milder cases are taken into account, the death toll would be massive.
“Sixty per cent of the world’s population is an awfully big number”

The overriding question is to figure out the size and shape of the iceberg.

Most experts thought that each person infected would go on to transmit the virus to about 2.5 other people. That gave an “attack rate” of 60-80%.

Even if the general fatality rate is as low as 1%, which Leung thinks is possible once milder cases are taken into account, the death toll would be massive.

Prof. Gabriel Leung is one of the world’s experts on coronavirus epidemics, played a major role in the Sars outbreak in 2002-03, and works closely with other leading scientists at Imperial College London and Oxford University.

With a mortality rate of 1% = > 100,000,000 deaths.

Consider a one percent CFR is with health care systems fully functional.

We all have a front row seat to the control. How's that working out for you?

99% of the people who go to the hospital are going to get there AFTER the staff has already gotten the virus and the staff will be down by 80% to 95%. The Chinese-made medicines will have been exhausted, and we will be out of masks. This is third-world medical care. Wonder what the fatality rate will be then.

At that point, you're as well off if you stay at home and sacrifice a small quadruped.

Hawai‘i preps for coronavirus
By The Garden Island | Thursday, January 30, 2020, 12:05 a.m.

HONOLULU — Stating the risk to the general public is low, the Hawai‘i Department of Health announced Wednesday that is working with state, county, and federal partners including the medical community and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to actively prepare for possible cases of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Last week, the DOH alerted the medical community and information for healthcare providers has been posted online.

Currently, there are no cases of 2019-nCoV identified in Hawai‘i. The coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China and currently there are more than 6,000 cases confirmed in China and at least 17 countries. This includes 132 deaths in China. There have been at least five cases in the U.S. of people who traveled to Wuhan or other areas in China and no evidence of person to person spread of the virus in the U.S.

“The Hawai‘i Department of Health is working closely with our emergency-response network to put proactive measures in place to protect our residents and visitors,” said Health Director Bruce Anderson. “Because Hawai‘i is a major travel destination, planning and preparing for possible outbreaks is an ongoing activity. The emergence of the 2019 coronavirus in Wuhan and its potential to spread to areas outside of China poses an increased threat to travelers and Hawai‘i residents and we’ve ramped up our efforts.”

“We are advising people not to travel to China at this time,” said Anderson. “Various areas in China have been placed under quarantine by the Chinese government, and travel within the country is either completely prohibited or significantly curtailed to prevent the spread of this disease.”

To date, the DOH has posted fresh information online to ensure healthcare providers are aware of the situation and understand response urgency to report potential cases to DOH immediately. The entity is also monitoring the respiratory disease surveillance system to ensure Hawai‘i is prepared should a person potentially exposed or infected with 2019-nCoV be identified. They’re also in communication with public and private travel partners and working to ensure all are up to date with infection control.

Yesterday, the CDC reported that active airport screening of all incoming passengers from Wuhan, China is being expanded from five major U.S. airports (SFO, LAX, JFK, ATL and ORD) to all 20 U.S. airports with CDC quarantine stations. The Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu is one of the 20 airports nationwide with a quarantine station under federal authority, specifically CDC and Customs and Border Protection.

People who have become sick after travel to China, particularly Hubei Province, are advised to do the following:

• Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms;

• Stay home. Except for seeking medical care, avoid contact with others;

• Do not travel while sick;

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing;

• Wash hands often with clean soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

We investigate all reports of persons with potential 2019 novel coronavirus infection to quickly identify persons with likely infection as well as those who may have been exposed to them,” said Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist. “Lab testing to confirm this infection is conducted at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the only U.S. laboratory that can conduct testing for the 2019 novel coronavirus at this time.”

DOH also recommends that everyone get vaccinated for influenza to reduce the number of flu cases in Hawai‘i clinics and hospitals. This will help reduce confusion, as persons with influenza will have signs and symptoms like 2019-nCoV. DOH strongly recommends that residents six months and older protect themselves against flu by receiving the seasonal influenza vaccination.

DOH has extensive protocols in place for infectious disease outbreak control and prevention activities.

I'm wondering if this quarantine is actually working': Quarantined passenger (on ship in Japan)
this is actually a reverse quarantine. they hold you on board until you test positive. And then, they remove you . . . after you have infected x number of people.
in a real quarantine, they keep you until you prove you do not have the disease.

Hubei Doctors Warn Of Even-Deadlier Coronavirus Reinfection Causing Sudden Heart Attacks

Doctors working on the front lines of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak have told the Taiwan Times that it's possible to become reinfected by the virus, leading to death from sudden heart failure in some cases.

"It’s highly possible to get infected a second time. A few people recovered from the first time by their own immune system, but the meds they use are damaging their heart tissue, and when they get it the second time, the antibody doesn’t help but makes it worse, and they die a sudden death from heart failure," reads a message forwarded to Taiwan News from a relative of one of the doctors living in the United Kingdom.
The source also said the virus has “outsmarted all of us,” as it can hide symptoms for up to 24 days. This assertion has been made independently elsewhere, with Chinese pulmonologist Zhong Nanshan (鍾南山) saying the average incubation period is three days, but it can take as little as one day and up to 24 days to develop symptoms.

Also, the source said that false negative tests for the virus are fairly common. “It can fool the test kit – there were cases that they found, the CT scan shows both lungs are fully infected but the test came back negative four times. The fifth test came back positive.” -Taiwan Times

Notably, one of the ways coronaviruses cripple the immune system is via an HIV-like attachment to white blood cells, which triggers a 'cytokine storm' - a term popularized during the avian H5N1 influenza outbreak - in which an uncontrolled release of inflammatory 'cytokines' target various organs, often leading to failure and in many cases death.
The cytokine storm is best exemplified by severe lung infections, in which local inflammation spills over into the systemic circulation, producing systemic sepsis, as defined by persistent hypotension, hyper- or hypothermia, leukocytosis or leukopenia, and often thrombocytopenia.
...
In addition to lung infections, the cytokine storm is a consequence of severe infections in the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, central nervous system, skin, joint spaces, and other sites. (Tisoncik, et. al, Into the Eye of the Cytokine Storm)(2012)
According to the 2012 study, "Cytokine storms are associated with a wide variety of infectious and noninfectious diseases and have even been the unfortunate consequence of attempts at therapeutic intervention."
How do coronaviruses enter the body?

With SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome), another coronavirus, researchers discovered that one of the ways the disease attaches itself is through an enzyme known as ACE2, a 'functional receptor' produced in several organs (oral and nasal mucosa, nasopharynx, lung, stomach, small intestine, colon, skin, lymph nodes, thymus, bone marrow, spleen, liver, kidney, and brain).

ACE2 is also "abundantly present in humans in the epithelia of the lung and small intestine, which might provide possible routes of entry for the SARS-CoV," while it was also observed "in arterial and venous endothelial cells and arterial smooth muscle cells" - which would include the heart.

This has led some to speculate that Asians, who have higher concentrations of ACE2 (per the 1000 genome project) may be affected to a greater degree than those of European ancestry, who produce the least of it - and have largely been the asymptomatic 'super spreaders' such as Diamond Princess coronavirus victim Rebecca Frasure.

And so while more research on COVID-19 is urgently needed - we know that coronavirus can target ACE2 receptors, which are found in the cardiovascuar system. And we have seen evidence of both sudden collapses and neurological damage from footage pouring out of Wuhan, China.

If the virus can reinfect patients and cause cytokine storms and sudden death - possibly exacerbated by therapeutic intervention - treating the coronavirus which CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield says will become widespread throughout the United States 'this year or next,' it is vitally important to understand exactly how COVID-19 works, and how to treat it. That would require cooperation from China and a CDC team on the ground in the epicenter. For some unknown reason, however, China still refuses to grant US scientists access to ground zero.

To Tame Coronavirus, Mao-Style Social Control Blankets China
Despite their high-tech tools, the authorities are mainly relying on a flood of workers to keep hundreds of millions of people from coming in contact with outsiders.

Residential lockdowns of varying strictness — from checkpoints at building entrances to hard limits on going outdoors — now cover at least 760 million people in China, or more than half the country’s population, according to a New York Times analysis of government announcements in provinces and major cities. Many of these people live far from the city of Wuhan, where the virus was first reported and which the government sealed off last month.

I'm sorry. I know it's hard. I posted about this way upthread. I tried to get my Vet team of fifteen years to listen. Didn't work. They are great folks, and I will miss them if this thing takes off. I think in the coming days there will be a lot of conversations that don't go how we wish they should. And later, a bunch of infected people wishing, If only. The prince of the air runs this show for now, so it makes total sense that what is coming for us is... airborne. He is also pretty good about making people willfully blind and stubborn.
