Contagion Preps for coronavirus

An excellent read on the history of the 1918 flu the: The Great Influenza. Yes some things have changed since 1918 but human nature isn't one of them. Some things have actually gotten worse. Air travel spreads it faster and in 1918 major cities still had the food security of local farms, healthy ocean fisheries and local food processors. Many still put food by for winter when it was in season and cheaper as refrigeration isn't what it is today and JIT didn't exsist.

If Bill Sardi thinks the average American is any less "malnourished" than the average Chinese, he's not very bright. Fatter, sure... but the American diet is woefully lacking in almost all essential and trace vitamins and minerals.

And the fact that he's saying this is "just a cold virus" puts the whole article in the "useless propaganda" file for me.

Summerthyme
This posting is absolutely full of falsehoods. The current death rate for those infected (if and this is a big if, China isn’t screwing around with the numbers) is a little over 3%. Being a word smith doesn’t alter reality. Summerthyme is correct in her analysis of this propaganda turd.

Transferring in and out of a home during a pandemic with high CFR

Remember I'm not an expert or a medical provider. I am not giving medical advice. I'm not going over appropriate PPE's. Find them on the CDC's website.

I had this discussion with a woman who was a Thanatologist (Study of death and dying) back in the day of the H5N1 Bird Flu scare. This is what I remember of her conversation and as many here know my memory isn't the best. So healthcare providers or more observant please chime in on what I misstated, misremembered, forgotten or missed. -OGM

First think of three Zones like a traffic light:
Red - Hot treat like possible contagion present. This can be a person coming in from outside the home or something from outside the home that is being brought into the home. It can also refer to a quarantine/sick room. Contagion doesn't stop because a person walks thru a door.
Yellow - in between stage not as safe as possible but getting there. These are the protocols to help mitigate bringing the disease into the home. THis can also refer to the area in or outside the home where processing takes place. Yellow might also be the fridge because some flu virus stay viable longer in cold humid places and on certain types of surfaces. If yellow then I'm probably in PPE's
Green - Cold as safe as time, resources, abilities and knowledge allow. Safe during a pandemic is a relative term. Nowhere is truly safe. Basically this is inside the home other that the Yellow area or sick room.

Yellow - mail
Before bringing mail into the home: discard outside packaging and envelopes. Put letters in flat plastic resealable clear plastic bag with pertinent information visible. Reseal bags. Sanitize gloved hands before sanitizing the outside of the bags and passing them inside. Or just take a picture with phone and discard, much easier but may not be advisable for contracts and legal papers etc. I'm going to have to find out how to sanitize a phone/laptop/TV controls etc.

Green - Mail
Address whatever issues the mail brings leaving the mail in the sealed bags. If the document is to be kept leave it in the bag longer than the incubation period of the disease and longer than the disease can survive on the material. How long is that? Not sure at this time.

Yellow - Groceries
With fresh rinse in bleach solution - Clorox or the USDA may have the specs for the strength of the solution. Personally I want all veggies cooked before eating until after the threat passes, unless I'm using safe seed to sprout in the home. Cans: remove labels and mark date and contents on can with Sharpie. Rince can in bleach solution. Meat - discard packaging and put into container to be cooked in and cover, or put into sanitized containers for fridge storage. Always handle raw meat with gloves. Paper packaging - flour, rice beans etc. pour contents into sterile container, mark contents and date. Discard packaging.

Red - People
My old plan was to have anyone from outside the home or commuting to work quarantine in our RV. That is no longer an option. -OGM

Back to the conversation: have some place at or near the exterior door to store external clothing that can't easily be sanitized on a regular basis (foot ware, winter: coats, hats and mittens etc,). It should have a door or plastic cover to seal it off from the rest of the home or use a sealable plastic storage tub. Place regular clothing in a plastic bag/container. Sanitize gloves and exterior of bag.

Yellow
Regular clothes in plastic bag go directly into wash. Person takes shower and into quarantine room. Common surfaces get sanitised.

Likewise protective protocol steps should be used passing things like meals and waste in and out of sick/quarantine rooms.

We went to Home Depot to grab a few things and they have a full shelf on N95 masks as well as the N99.5 half masks that you just change filters on.

I have a picture but not the means to post it today...

Hard boiled eggs
I know this is going to sound pretty mundane as preps go. I just hardboiled about a dozen eggs. I'm figuring pre wrapped, cooked ready to eat instant protein pellets. If the power goes out I plan to peel them and keep them in a solution of water, salt and apple cider vinegar. Hopefully they'll get eaten long before they go bad.

If you need something from them, go ahead and order. The meds are all well sealed. When they get here, I'd spray the outside of the box (wear gloves while handling it at first... if they hand deliver your orders like our post office does, ask them to set it on the porch instead of taking it from their hand, or quickly grab a plastic bag and have them drop it in) with chlorhexidine (available as a generic very reasonably priced at tractor supply type places) or Lysol. Let it dry, then open the box wearing gloves, and wipe down the individual cards, bottles or packages.

This is probably overkill... you could also open the box and then sit it in a warmish room with a humidifier running for a couple of days... the virus survives longest in cool/cold and dry. Don't overdo it, especially if you are wanting to put some of the stuff away in the prep stash.

This was the best place to see all the options and what to do. Great posts. Just a word of caution though. Everyone has to decide for themselves what are the best options for them. Meds and other factors in life age ,sex, weight etc may play a factor in what you decide You should research your particular case for potential negative drug/herb interactions. Remember this MAY turn into a life or death situation and if you self medicate or treat you may have only one shot to survive. Make that shot the right one.
Don't forget to pray. Our heavenly father listens!

Correct, I agree. I take 5000 iu daily. Being in a northern climate we get less sun and spend less time outdoors. Interestingly Northern climates have a higher rate of cancer than southern where people get more exposure to sun light. The vitamin D pathway controls much in the human body. Good thing to take.

My oldest daughter is a chemist working for a major pharmaceutical company. She made a comment in her blog today that I thought worth passing on. She reminded her readers that the Chinese have a smaller ‘personal space bubble’ than most Americans - we tend to have the largest personal space bubbles in the world (and my personal space bubble is even bigger than most other Americans, I suspect because I grew up in a very low-population environment). This contributes to a higher infectious disease rate in China, and helps protect us here in America. So one thing you can do to protect yourself is to simply increase the amount of space that you keep between you and strangers when you are out and about. Take your other precautions too, of course.

I have read in the past about I think the Spanish flu, where people put an cut onions in their homes to combat the flu germs ?? Wondering if this would work with this flu ?? Thoughts ??

I have heard the same but mostly superstition. Dr Ruth MacDonald stated "The fact that a vegetable would attract and suck into itself from the air is not even logical. No onions do not absorb bacteria." Has basis in Ayurvedic medicine. However, The Hutterite community,a pacifist community similar to the Amish say they do it and it works. Take your pick and if You enjoy the smell of onions all nite then do it. But for me and mine a big fat no!

Let me be really blunt here. PAY ATTENTION!
I'll put this in terms of Trump's earlier tweet.

"We are in very close communication with China concerning the virus." YES WE ARE - both officially (full of PC lies) and unofficially (in direct contact with researchers and family members of researcher that are in this country.)

"Very few cases REPORTED in the USA, but strongly on watch." Reported by the political CDC. They are SCUM - they will do anything not to create a panic. I know they lie specifically due to the "boots on ground" work my boss has done on ebola and SARS. "Officially" there are few confirmed nCoV cases publicized in the US. There are a whole bunch of people being investigated. There are even MORE secondary contacts. Case in point, in my own town we have an individual who came in on the same flight as the first positive in Washington state. NO ONE has officially contacted him or his family. (We are feeding him facts and recommendations at a distance.)

"We have offered China and President Xi any help that is necessary." We have University links to several research facilities in China and directly with personnel there. The Fake News reports and the clinical reports we've received so far are dramatically different. There is a lot of high-quality information coming in directly to and from researchers. Chinese politics will "save face". Researchers are saving lives and getting the technical information out.

"Our experts are extraordinary!" Absolutely! My boss has a 200+ IQ (tested). He has US patents out the ying-yang. He has spoken directly with the President in the past. His team is just as extraordinary. I am responsible for the medical health of that team (Don't ask how this dumbass Emergency Physician got linked into this group - I just consider it a privilege to know these people that make a profound difference in the world EVERY DAY.)

HERE ARE THE FACTS AS I KNOW THEM:

1. They have traced the virus back to "Patient 0" (I can't find anymore unclassified information about him.) .

2. The original virus contains gene sequences from a "Civit" (cat like), "Krate Snake" and "Horseshoe Bat". There is a great argument about who ate/got infected by whom first. The exotic meat of all three were sold at the Meat Market at WuHan. The possibility of a weaponized/engineered virus has NOT been ruled out.

3. There is a HIGH suspicion this can be transmitted to/from snakes, domestic cats and bats though that is unproven at this time.

4. The virus has evolved TOWARD better human to human transmission and IS continuing to do so.

5. The PUBLIC numbers from China are EXTREMELY LOW. (Direct information to researchers in the US from family of researchers that are in the field themselves. You can dispute all the videos and statements coming out of China, but that fact remains they are reacting much more aggressively in response to this than the seasonal flu that kills thousands times the current "official" nC0V numbers.)

6. The current OFFICIAL rate of sustained infection (R0) is 1.4 to 2.6. Anything over 1 is considered to be self-sustaining. (I suspect that number is much higher due to undocumented infections, whether hidden, self-quarantined, mis-diagnosed or unable to see a documenting health professional. )

7. Current (well documented) incubation is 1-14 days.

8. Infected can shed virus 2-5 days BEFORE showing symptoms of their infection.

9. Surface survival of the virus is approximately 15 minutes (Exposed to sun and chemicals) and up to 7+ days when not exposed to high moisture and UV radiation. (WuHan is a big manufacturing area for the world - Budweiser Beer has been produced there since the mid-90's. Think of all the exports. Think of the contact spread of the virus.)

10. You have to get a certain number of viri to produce an infection. That number is unknown. Avoid areas where people/germs can concentrate (planes, trains, autos, meeting rooms, etc.)

THINGS TO DO:

- Stay home.
- Don't allow visitors.
- Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands - for 20 seconds at least, and with soap (Don't depend on hand sanitizers - some are not effective and people don't always use them properly).
- Wash your hands before putting anything in your mouth.
- Nothing in mucus membranes (Eyes, ears, nose, mouth, vagina, anus). Sorry Ladies and Gentleman, you are going to have to put away your toys for the duration.
- Don't touch your face.
- Avoid crowds, gatherings, clinics and ESPECIALLY hospitals.
- If you have to go out as this develops, mask, gloves, whole body clothing - then launder/shower when home.
- Prep for sheltering-in-place for a minimum of 2 weeks.
- Get it done!

HERE IS WHAT I AM DOING:

Yes, I have to work.

For simple masks we only use N-100s. Anything less is insufficient (will leak during normal activities and are uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time - read you will touch the outer surface repeatedly to adjust it - BAD) and in the case of surgical masks - those ear loop pieces of cloth/paper, can enhance the spread of the infection when they get wet from regular respirations (20 minutes). BTDT

We use clear wrap around protective lenses generally and goggles for bad stuff. The goggles work well as I can keep my glasses on.

The house has several HEPA air filters, both floor units and high-grade AC filters in the forced air unit (pain in the butt to replace every 3 months).

We wipe everything with Clorox Clean-ups (switches, door handles, railings, anything your hand touches). We wash is as high as temperature as permissible - bodies, clothing, dishes, etc.

We are now experimenting with UV-C hand wands for non-wipe-able items.

RETURNING FROM A DAY AT THE CLINIC:

I come in the basement door and drop my clothing in the laundry or directly into the washer. Doctor bag stays in the basement. (We are experimenting with UV-C lighting for the laundry when we are not there). Shoes/Doctor bag get sprayed with Lysol or UV wanded. From there, I head directly to the shower and redress in clean clothing. The wife wipes everything I've touched down with Clorox Cleanups. Only then do I kiss the wife, play with the dogs, get something to eat, and check my e-mails. After that, its time to drag the wife off to bed for some fun. Since the AIDS epidemic way back when, we agreed to share any lethal bug I might contract in my job - personal choice.

This procedure of stripping and showering got my physician Grandfather through the Spanish Flu without infection as he saw patients in their homes daily. We actually read it in my Grandmother's diary and adopted the practice here.

I will provide more information as it becomes available. Please don't hit me with PMs or open questions. I don't have the time and get really snarky when I get exhausted.

Good luck and Godspeed.

If this continues to escalate and if cases start to be found anywhere reasonably close to where I live I plan to self isolate. I'm canning chicken breast & ham that was on sale to add to my shelf stable protein supply, and will continue adding to that within reason as we see how this develops. If it turns out to be a nothingburger, well I'll eventually just make meals out of everything so I'm not out anything.

After I finish canning ham today I'm going to start at the front door and start working my way through the house doing a thorough "spring cleaning" from doorknobs to ceiling fans and everything in between. Again, I won't lose anything except some effort by doing this.

I did buy a few rolls of thick plastic sheeting & duct tape from Home Depot the other day so I can construct some shielding, barriers and portals for my third garage bay in case I need to make a "dirty zone", decontamination zone, etc if this thing gets serious nearby.

BTW, they have disposable protective suits like painters use there, so you could buy a supply of them to wear to take the trash out or whatever if you had to. If you do that just remember to wear rubber shoes or at least shoes made of some non-permeable material and plan to leave those shoes in the dirty zone when you come back (also decontaminate them before reuse). Tape the bottom of the suit, tuck your gloves under the cuffs and tape over the cuffs too. When you return to the house come into the dirty zone and dispose of the suit you used & the gloves into a trash container with a lid. be careful how you remove the suit & gloves so you don't contaminate your hands in the process.

Remember to wipe off the mask (if it's reusable) in disinfectant solution, and then go into the decontamination section to clean your hands and any other exposed area before you enter your "clean zone" (the house itself).

There's only so much we can do about the house. Now's a good time to replace your air filters if you haven't recently, and have some new ones on hand. If you work or have to be out & about for whatever reason just practice good hygiene and common sense. Don't be shaking hands with folks, try to keep your distance from others as much as possible, use hand sanitizer after touching things (amazing how many germs are on grocery cart handles), and scrub your hands well for at least a minute (and often).

Several of you asked about whether or not to give liquids to someone who has flu symptoms. YES -- from everything I've been reading it appears that the fatalities so far have been from viral pneumonia caused by the coronavirus. When a person has pneumonia the bronchioles are inflamed and secrete excessive amounts of thick mucus which in turn begins to fill the lungs making it very difficult for the lungs to expand properly and for air exchange to work. (simplified version)

Liquids, especially water, will help to thin the mucus so the person will be able to cough it up and expel it from the lungs. A Vaporizer in the room will help provide more moisture to the lungs, OTC meds such as Mucinex help thin the mucus, and expectorants will help them cough it up. Turning the person on their stomach and cupping the lung lobes with your hands every few hours will also help break up mucus. You want the person to get the stuff out of their lungs to help them breathe, so give them all the water or electrolyte solution - or even soda if that's what they want - that they want. Just avoid things that give rise to more mucus production - such as milk etc.

Ok, I'm back to getting some stuff done. Stay healthy all!

Summerthyme, this might have been covered already, so please forgive me. I've been working today and I'm bushed. I belong to a TH corona virus info group and saw an article posted. Tried to cut and paste to no avail. According to the author, the Corona Virus DOES cause a cyclonic storm. What are your thoughts? If this is correct, the elderberry, Echinacea, etc. we have stashed would be dangerous to use.

Sigh... anything is possible. I'm not sure there was a worse place for something like this to start... reliable info just isn't there...

I've read a ton on this in the last 10 days (how quickly the world can change!) And *at least to me*, it doesn't appear that cytokine storm is a big part of this virus. That doesn't mean it doesn't/can't happen, of course.

Still... my fallback position has always been that elderberry *doesn't* stimulate the immune system... at least, it has never been known as a potent immune stimulant. (Elderflower, OTOH, *is* an immune system stimulant. Avoid combination products for any serious virus where a cytokine storm is possible... however, combination products can be very useful for milder infections.)

Echinacea IS... and it's not an herb to be using for *treatment*, anyway... it is useful taken before exposure, for up to 6 weeks at a time, with at least a week break after that to allow the body to "reset". There have been no decent studies showing that using it as a treatment for the common cold (which, of course, is also a coronavirus) does anything at all.

My personal choice and opinion... elderberry (possibly combined with resveratrol and olive leaf extract) DOES inhibit viral replication. It's the ONLY thing accessible to us non medical types that does. It's well known that the severity of a viral illness is directly related to the viral load... the numbers of virus in the body. So... I'll still use elderberry EARLY AND OFTEN... attempting to keep the viral load low. This *should* keep symptoms milder, which may mitigate the chances of a cytokine storm developing.

I'm also stocked on acetylcysteine, which is useful in chest congestion (due to mucus...probsbly not as useful in congestion due to swelling and inflammation in the lungs). And curcumin, of course (for thst inflammation)

As always, and for the many newbies reading... I am NOT a medical professional. I'm a farmer who did almost all the health care for my family and livestock for almost 50 years. I've read and learned and experimented, and my posts are the result. DO YOUR OWN DUE DILIGENCE!

And pray! I KNOW that works!

Aren't the majority of the world's computer chips currently produced in China? If trade with China is interpreted or there are production problems due to quarantines and interruptions in supply shipments this could be a problem.

The US no longer supports the idea of keeping critical industries on shore. The only thing in the last decade or so I remember Congress critters fighting to keep in the US was the production of the Federal Reserve Note.

Excellent post ST. In my little bit of knowledge, I try to point out things that MAY not be known and not to criticize by posting them. My intent has been always the well being of those that read the posts. as an example, I'll post this:

Resveratrol: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Dosage, and Warning

The 3rd and 4th page will state what I was trying to put across. People must do their due diligence as stated by you.

I personally would hate for something negative to happen to a relative or friend that I suggested he or she should take.
Quite frankly I don't know how I found this but I thought it might be GERMane.

Also I came across some research on the length of time the Coronavirus will stay viable. At a temperature of 4 degrees centigrade and low humidity it remained viable on a stainless steel surface for 28 days.

Drugs and herbs, viability, etc. Where does it all end? Hopefully for me and mine not in a morgue awaiting cremation!

Peace and God Bless

I'm praying those in supervisory positions allow employees who can, to work from home.

Today I made bone/vegetable broth. It's one of my stand bys that I make ahead and freeze in serving size containers. I'd can it but now lack the equipment.

Tourshee Pickle

3 quart water
1 quart vinegar with mother
½ cup salt (not iodized)
Bunch of dill – cut root off and drop in whole
Garlic Cloves (6-8)
2 tablespoons Coriander seed
Veggies: Cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, Italian peppers, string beans, baby cucumbers, celery, peppers (pierce peppers so the pickle juice can get inside- will change flavor of pickel - I used a few jalapenos).
Do green tomatoes in separate jar (pierce with fork). Don't use broccoli it gets mushy. Do not use tomatoes with the least bit of red in them.

Make sure all veggies are submerged or scum will form. A few seeds always float to the top. I've kept it months in our refrigerator. I also experimented and kept some in a cold dark corner of the basement in glass jars. Don't use metal or plastic containers. YMMV.

Wax paper between the pickle and lid will help keep the acid and salt from rusting the lid. Check for rust. Don't put the lid on too tight the mother is alive.

Looking to put together a couple of kits for my family members and mail them to them. That way they have everything they need. Here is what I am looking at:

Vitamin D
Zinc lozenges
Mucinex
Turmeric
Aleve

Include the recommended doses etc from a couple of sites.

THat way they have everything in one place. Knowing my parents they probably have the stuff but it is scattered everywhere. My sister has some but not all. They have plenty of cleaning stuff etc and my father has a pile of masks in his shop.

Taken from past posts on TB, probably good idea to repost now:

Oral Rehydration Solution

One quart clean water
6 teaspoons or 2 tablespoons sugar
Half teaspoon each normal salt and potassium chloride “salt substitute”
or
Teaspoon “lite salt” it’s half/half sodium and potassium chlorides
Half teaspoon baking soda
For flavor, add-sugar type Kool-Aid at half strength
I don't have “lite salt” it’s half/half sodium and potassium chlorides or salt substitute. Can I substitute an equal amount of sea salt for the above?

No... it would be too heavy on sodium and lack the vital potassium. They don't sell "lite salt" anywhere where you are now? It's not expensive...

Wal-Mart carries it. If you can find a few more things to equal 35 bucks, and still have 35 bucks in the budget (believe me, I understand if you don't! ), they'll ship it to your door, free. Or, see if they're doing the "text your order and pick it up outside" thing... Will keep you from having to roam through the store.

If you want a pure expectorant, buy Mucinex. Most of the combination products (like Tussin DM) have both an expectorant and a cough suppressant, which seems awfully counterproductive!

What we do is take Mucinex (guaifenisen- it helps liquid and thin the mucous so you can eliminate it by coughing) during the day. Then, if coughing is interfering with sleep, we take something with dexamethorpan to suppress the cough enough to allow rest.

My household dental first aid kit

I don't want to have to break quarantine just because a filling failed or crown comes unstuck. Again I'm not giving medical advice. This is just what I have for my immediate family.

topical pain killer - we have Anbesol - Not a recommendation, just what we have on hand
Dentemp - Temporary loose cap and filling repair - picked it up at Walmart
Mouth wash
salt - if we run out of mouthwash to gargle with
dental floss/picks

Goodness before greatness.
These are the preps I'm currently working on for my family - just in case:

talk to healthcare professional about appropriate care & treatment for family members
Get supplies needed to set up a sick/quarantine room
Make sure appropriate OTC medications and scripts are filled and in date
Have ready to eat or easy to prepare meals like canned soup in stock, flavored Jello
Some rehydration fluid or powders could be a good thing to have on hand (Pedialyte for nutrients and electrolytes, I also like: Emergen-C - no I don't buy stock in either company)
Paper towels, baby wipes, disposable plates and cups could come in handy
cleaning and sanitation supplies
Check medical equipment thermometer and BP cuff.
A supply of good old fashion tea

I may pick up some CURCUMIN. ainitfunny seems to set store by it.

I'm just a concerned Mom not a health care professional.

In regards to curcumin.

I’m not a concerned Mom, nor a health care professional, yet I will take the time to do a few brief testimonies in regards to results after taking curcumin.

During a 5-K low tide rock run one day, I twisted (spring) my ankle. As soon as I detected the give away collapse, I no longer tasked that leg with support and simply aim my butt at the next large rock to fall into.

My ankle was probably 100ths of a second from snapping. Running as a kid in high school and afterwards, this was number 3 in my life to date.

I hopped off the rocky terrain on my left leg alone for over 440 yards up the trail off the beach. I was not going to have emergency services tasked with my exodus. My game, my risk.

By midnight when I fell asleep I recalled my Mom (long since passed), telling me of curcumin’s ability with ‘any’ inflammation. Mom was a vitamin fan/fanatic so I wasn’t so sure if she wanted to believe what she knew, or had experienced it firsthand.

1st hand testimonial:

At midnight I took 6x 500 mg, or 3-grams of Curcumin. Since I take NO PRESCRIPTION MED’s of any sort, I was ok taking the Chalky-dry powdered Curcumin that uses the compound a derivative of black pepper that helps your intestines absorb the chalky stuff that I had mixed with olive oil.

I woke at 0600 with six hours sleep, I wanted to forget the nightmare of my super fat ankle that I went to bed with. I looked down at my ankle, it was back to normal size. Unbelievable, except it was real.

A few years later a co-worker who is over weight, drinks hard, and exercises not, hobbles into the dry-cleaner. I walk up and recommend curcumin. Next time I see him he runs up to me like a line backer and grabs my hand and thanks me for his pain free mobility.

Here is where the potential maybe useful. I have never yet attacked a respiratory illness with Curcumin. The following video may shed light on such potential with our understanding of Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects.

Black pepper opens up-stimulates the stomach and intestines to absorb more of whatever you swallow; med’s included. Not something you want to do if your looking for consistency in processed bio-absorbed prescribed dosage. I learned that lesson with my brother who takes other med’s... What a mess the chemical change up to his psych-med’s were.

Lessons Learned - My Mistake. Be advised of black pepper compounds for this reason.

Pay a little more for Curcumin without black pepper compounds if you take prescription meds.
