Misc Week of June 30th Fireside Chat

packyderms_wife

Neither here nor there.
This is the weekly thread for chatting about what we're working on, and it is the ONLY thread where we can go a little bit off topic, but not by much.

Example of off topic would be: "I'm knitting hats for infants and am looking for ideas on where to donate them" etc. Such questions can also be their own thread under the Advice prefix.

So what are you knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc., this week?

So this week I've been inspired by an artist, Cas Holmes, from the UK and have been gathering up my stray bits of fabric, threads, yarn, and papers, and am planning to work on a series of water birds that may eventually be mounted to stretched canvas frames. These will be small, about 4x4 or 6x6 inches tops, I'm so looking forward to meditative stitch again.

My other project is finding the scarf I started knitting about ten years ago and get it finished in time for OC's birthday in August. ;)

I would love to share something wonderful and/or exciting that I'm working on, but most of what I do now is kind of boring. I have orders for 50 hemp washcloths and 75 cotton soapbags, so I'm working on those. Also sold out of scrubbies Saturday at market, so I need to make more of those for this week. I do a few of each every day to keep it from not being quite so boring. ;)

Make sure to put a post in the new advertising forum tomorrow when Dennis gets it finished, I'd love to have some hemp washcloths.

Working on a granny square baby blanket for a local home for homeless pregnant women.
Also embroidering a branch and leaves on a T-shirt sleeve to cover a stain that wouldn't come out (that's my old hippie streak coming out...).

I am making a simple hat that I was working on while traveling.

I also was amazed to win the drop spindle and some probably Iceland Fleece at the raffle Saturday night - they raffled by item (you didn't get to choose) and I had forgotten my spindle - I have some of the wool spun already.

I also got about 3/4's of a pound of wonderful white fleece at the Finnriver Farm Shop on the way back from Ft. Flager to Seattle; I chatted with them about the Barn Cat book and they may be interested.

I'm planning on spinning and working on the hat this week; then seeing what I can do about the dreaded sweater of cat pee that I need to try and wash somewhat but without felting because I still need to knit the sleeves.

We are getting warm weather this week so I may try spot washing and hanging it out in the sun - I know if I even wash it by hand it will change things slightly and I want the sleeves to match (then I can really wash it and hang out again).

I am so glad we have this space now!

Knit the sleeves up and then wash them at the same time as the sweater? Would that work? Natures Miracle for the cat pee smell.

melody, would it hurt the garment to put baking soda on it to take out the smell until you could get the sleeves knitted.

Production work pays the bills. BTDT. I'm in for some washcloths too when you get your inventory up again. What is a soapbag?

Have a gigantic scrappy quilt top I’ve finished for oldest son & wife. Way too massive to attempt quilting myself and found a local shop that will do it for a penny an inch. Will be spendy but will be worth it. Love how it turned out.

Also making a couple of very pretty dresses for the two grandgirls in Florida (7 & 3). Then will cut out the authentic dirndle dresses I’m making them for Christmas. That’ll be some work but just gorgeous.

Ongoing hat, mittens, socks in progress as usual. Someday I’ll get back to the cross stitch project but not during gardening season!

I am awaiting some fabric for a computer bag project. Meanwhile, I have some practice squares or quilt sandwich to make and baste for Natalia Bonner's ruler work class on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hW89RsbqUc&list=PLozkYQ5lEBaQA_RfEZFXevubcboFzLBXV and some quilt squares I made a few years ago that need ironing, piecing and borders for a quilt top for my son for Christmas.

I also have an overshot runner on the big loom I need to finish. It is the second of 2. The first one I cut off and donated to a school auction. It is complex for me with multiple colors, weft threads, treadling and takes a lot of concentration. That is why I have procrastinated. However, family is growing in need of replacement dish towels and I need to re-warp and do a bunch of those.

This board might get me motivated.

The overshot pattern is Fall Fiesta Placemats Sept/Oct Handwoven 2014 by Catherine Alter

I love your color palette of purple fuschia and green!

Nope, I have to knit them down from the top of the sweater - it is a slash type sweater with a steek so it has to be knit from the steek after I sew down the edges and slash it.

I don't know if we have Natural's Miracle here but I will look.

All my projects are currently on hold as we are moving and its all packed!!! All I have in the house to save my sanity is a basket of fiber, hand combs and a drop spindle.

Projects on hold are a handspun, knit heirloom baby blanket for my grandbaby. The wool is from one of my sheep.

My other project is recreating an 18th C petticoat for a frontier woman. This is from one of my sheep to finished petticoat. I'm documenting the whole process, including time, so as to present it when I do public demo's. So far I have 5622 yards of 2-ply @24 WPI. I have 120 hours of prep (skirting, picking, washing, and combing) and spinning time in so far. I'm spinning this on my Country Craftsman wheel. I should have enough spun for the warp @15 EPI, so now I need to clean a second fleece to finish the weft. I plan to use a basic 2 over twill for the weave structure. I'll be warping 30" wide and long enough to make 4 panels my undetermined length. I'll also need to weave a narrow band for the top edging and ties.

Weaving an overshot throw for an order, it's two shades of blue warp and tabby, with a maroon/cranberry wool that I dyed as pattern weft. Forgot how much attention I need to pay to weaving this pattern! Will next put on cotton checked runners in tan and medium blue, a 4x4 check, easy to weave after this overshot.
We are planning to teach a basic sewing class to school-age children from the church and community toward July/August and into fall. They can learn hand-sewing with a simple stuffed animal face, then sew the pieces together for the body. First project for them on the machine will be a simple pin-cushion. Glad to pass on the sewing bug, I remember being little and learning from my mom and grandma how to use the ancient Singer, LOL.

How fun to read about everyone’s projects. I have to say you are an extremely creative bunch. I’m taking advantage of the lull after lambing to get a few projects warped and finished. I’m winding warp in tencel for a wedding shawl, ready to wind linen warp for krokbragd on another loom. I like having multiple projects going so when I’m bored, or things are not going well, I can take a step back and move to another project for a bit. Oh, And I have a series of baby blankets I pulled off that need to be finished. Always something to do.

Besides knitting hats I'm trying to finish a UFO project of a pair of embroidered pillow cases that have Gibson girls on them. ~sigh~

Broaken arrow - that petticoat is quite a project.Really would love to see it when finished. There is no wonder why pioneer women had few dresses.

Rosepath - I gave some classes to my grandkids a few years ago. My grandson got as far as a pillowcase. My grand daughter managed shorts and a kimono I bought a special children's Janome that had protections at the foot so they wouldn't sew their fingers

Sherpherdess - I have always wanted to try krokbragd. There are some cute pattern for Christmas. I have never worked with linen. I live in a dry area, so I guess you would have to spritz it all the time. The other thing I would like to try is Rep weave. I have seen some stunning runners and rugs.

Pictures of my latest project. I designed embroidery on organza then replaces panels on a purchased Jean jacket. The perimeter was triple stitched then fringed. My DIL loved it ;)

What a stunning jacket, love it!!
Marsh, rep weave is one I'd like to try too, I helped Rabbit Goody warp for a rep weave historic runner once at a workshop (my brush with fame :), the colors were lovely. Once all that warping is done, it should be easy one-shuttle weaving. And really, what's not to like about something you can beat the tar out of during weaving, pouring all frustrations into a creative endeavor?

Love the jacket Reaganchick! Excellent idea, now I'll have to see about finding a used denim jacket to alter in some manner.
