The average age here at TB, based upon a poll taken here last year, is about 65 to 67 years of age. IF you had to bug out tomorrow, for whatever reason, would you or could you?

I tried finding the poll I posted here from last summer asking people what their age group was, but alas it's not coming up so if someone has better search foo than I please post the link to the poll.

Btw this thread is based upon Shane's bug out bag thread, and the handbag thread that turned into an EDB (every day bag) threads.

I voted "yes" but I'm not going to, unless God takes it all away in massive flooding, fire or an F4-F5 twister we are staying put as we have no place to go to, and where we live is a place that others bug out to in the first place.

I know others here are not able to do so due to health problems, and we should cover those members in prayer!

Where I am located it shouldn't be necessary but if I had to I could. My plan would be to bug out in my car or on my mountain bike.

Certainly capable of it, but a whole lot would depend on the situation. I am sort of already AT my bug out location here.. so it would have to be a special situation fore me to leave here.

I voted yes, but not going to, unless there is a forest fire. I evacuated for Katrina, later moved to the woods and I'm here to stay until God calls me home. I need to redo my purse and BOB, only in the case of a fire or a tree falls on the house.

Not right now but after my surgery and rehab I hope to be able to. So here's hoping TEOTWAWKI holds off for a few more months!

I voted "yes, but not going to"; not sure if that's exactly honest. :) Depends on the definition of "bugging out"...LOL!

We live in "town" in a fairly safe part of the country. If our house burned down or was taken away by a tornado, sure, we'd leave; we actually still have our old property in another county (hopefully not for long, though!) so we wouldn't be homeless. Otherwise, we plan to stay here, "shelter" or "age" in place, and just take our chances. We're retired, our business is here, our church family is here, all of our kids & grandkids are here. Going "home" would be to the SF Bay Area...not happening. Plus we're getting older, both of us have arthritis & other chronic health problems, dh is looking at knee replacement surgery & mine aren't so great either. So could we bug out? If it were by vehicle, I guess so, though we have no plans so it would be pretty stupid; otherwise we wouldn't make it. Would we bug out? Even if we could it would be the absolute dead last choice. I guess what it comes down to is that although we're certainly not in any kind of "prepper's paradise", we consider ourselves already bugged out as far out as we're going to bug and have total peace about it.

If one of the mods could change the last No question to "No, I'm not physically capable" and add another choice No, I'm already bugged in, that'd be great!. Off to enjoy dinner with OC.

No, already live in the bugout location. besides, physically, not really viable any longer. Besides, i'm on an island, where do i bug out to? The mainland, where all hell is breaking loose? Nope.

For me the challenge wouldn't be bugging out, it will be getting home. Yes, I could do it - but I won't be fast, and I'm sure it won't be easy.

I purchased and live at my bug out location several years ago (I'm retired)....probably the only thing that would get me out of here is a forest fire....

I live at the end of a half mile dead end dirt road in a heavily forested neighborhood...and in case of fire...if my road is blocked I can walk the shallow creek that runs through my place. But I'm getting old...and at some point in the future....I may need one of my kids to help me.

My only perceived threat other than fire is an earthquake (I live near the Cascadian Subduction zone) and I have strengthened my foundation for that eventuality.

A year ago, i was not physically able to bug out. However, I've lost 40 pounds and started exercising and have improved my physical conditioning.
For the last 4 months I have traveling up to Missouri to help a friend on their farm. I had the opportunity to load a 40 yard container, by hand. Most of the detritus was steel which included a steel roof that had been damaged by tornado. I am not a big burly guy, but a guy who would be considered "a big burly guy" took a look inside the container and raised an eyebrow and asked "you loaded this yourself, by hand? That piece right there must weigh 400 pounds!" So, yea, I am 63 and physically able to bug out.
Would I? No ****ing way! I am staying here in my little country hidy hole in Texas.
Bugging out to a farm means doing all the work while a couple of slackers sit back and watch you work.

North to the Future
I answered yes, I can and would - if necessary. Because we have just one road heading north (and one road heading south) from town, I'm also prepared to go north-east over the mountains if need be (including in winter). It's taken years to become fit enough to have confidence that I can do so, and several refinements of my BOB. Hope to one day be able to live someplace where bugging out isn't a foregone conclusion!

"Other."

My physical condition pretty much has me ground hitched. Oh, I can go, but where? If a family member has room, I'll go. Otherwise, I'll defend self, as well as others, as long as I last. When I go, I want to be surrounded by shell casings, no ammo left, and all my weapons with bolts locked back. Give me a Viking funeral, and we'll meet again in either Heaven, or Valhalla...

Not sure. Have some tentative plans for a outing on the AT later this year. It's been a long time since I've done any serious back packing so it should be a good test.

Sam's Club has the Wise Bug out Bags in stock right now, you can purchase it in camo or in a nice red and leather combo. They also have a one person one month bug in box that even includes pouches of water, also by Wise.

I voted "Other." I am physically capable but my husband is not. He thinks he is but I am the more realistic one and I know he really isn't. We have sort of bugged out already. We use to live in Los Angeles and moved to rural Arizona.

Other! We're equipped to do so as we do own all the stuff as part of our camp gear. We live in a rather rural area surrounded spread out by large blocks of woods and farms so I do not expect to find my self having to run for the forest.

I have three expedition size backpacks all of them with external freighter frames. For reference two of them are Camp-trails Omega pack.

Ma'am, when meds are no longer available for my continuance, I shall go hunting- a one-way trip, and remove all threats near to those I love. I cannot, will not, ask for more than that. I will not die in my bed, unless taken by surprise. Our families, the future, deserve any and all help that they can get. There can be nothing more selfish, than carrying on as if things were normal, and in so doing, depriving a single thing to those who must go forth, into the future... I made my peace with God, long ago, when I swore upon His Altar, to defend the helpless, the hopeless, and the innocent. To remove the enemies of His Children, is my goal- at any cost...

fire - not a prep topic that gets near enough attention - you're not alone when it comes to fire spread in a SHTF - individual homeowners are in the same boot ....

don't know how many times I've read preppers that have spent $1,000s on prepping - and don't have a simple single use extinguisher in the kitchen for the everyday SHTF ....

it's a separate prepping plan all to itself - required supplies - necessary procedures - tactics - skills - prepared home installations ....

This would be a most excellent thread to start in the Homesteading forum here at TBK. Most people don't realize that a fire extinguisher is designed to only get you out the door, not put out a room that is on fire.

we are in out bug out location - and have been here since 2006. we're both are able to leave - but we BOTH decided we WILL NOT be going anywhere and are ready to be removed from here TOES UP.

there are two freighter type pacs with external aluminum frames ready to go in case of fire but "bad peeps" will NOT be the reason we shift colors and get under weigh from raggedy acres.

We are at the place where others will join us. For those of you looking at fire extinguishers , please be aware there is more than one kind of fire extinguisher. We also have 2 special extinguishers beside our kitchen stove, one on each side, called Flamestop. These are for "autos, kitchens, motor homes, camping.". By our woodburner in the library we have a couple of Chimfex to hang in the chimney in case of flares in there. Probably someone who knows better can describe these extinguishers properly.

P.S. Have nearly cleaned-out my apartment, family members being the beneficiaries. Next, what's in storage. Since I can no longer lift a rifle, let alone carry one, and all of it's attendant ammo and gear, I'm now "reduced" to being a two-gun desperado type... I'd like to think Bruce Willis' "Last Man Standing" will be like my epitaph, or a future Clint Eastwood movie- "Stack 'Em High..." Only God knows when my time runs out. Well beyond my paygrade... Will just do what I know to be right. Have already made arrangements and plans, for WHEN the SHTF- IF I'm still alive... I'll go hunting, and reduce the vermin population that would otherwise beset the fields of the Lord... When meds are no longer available, or it might mean a child having a meal, I'm outta here, with a grin, and an itchy finger for coyotes an' other pestiferous critters... I'll be singin' "Vaya con Dios..."

Down on the Farm...
I'm already bugged out on this remote farm in WV, which is a remote mountainous state anyway. Beyond here, where we could go to I don't know. We could go deeper into the woods but I don't see us doing that. We'd all rather just take whatever comes right here. Obviously we'd leave for fire but we'd come right back as soon as it was safe. We'd throw up a tiny house of rough cut lumber and go from there. The worst thing I can imagine is fleeing permanently, in a vehicle, to someplace where I'm basically a helpless stranger and homeless. There are things worse than dying!

Yes, Dear Lady, there ARE, indeed, things worse than dying. To me, living and dying, without honor, are unthinkable. To not do what is necessary, regardless of the cost, when the chips are down, should be impossible for all rational, thinking people...

I voted "other". Here is my explanation that you asked for.

For first, my wife is a quadriplegic who rides a power chair. Bugging out would have to be by road, especially during a wet spell. We're well-prepared to stay and survive, even thrive, where we are, providing we get past the reason for the bugout. Family land is <20 minute drive by car, <1 hr by tractor, and <3 hr by foot from our living room....HOWEVER, while providing a place to grow food, it gives NOTHING else in the way of sustainability such as defensibility or fuel (one single tree on the whole place!) or even palatable drinking water. I know, we need another option. Current news cycles have gotten the rest of the family on board with finding such an alternate further from the city. I hope it's in time that it happens, given the aforementioned current news cycle's content....or lack thereof.

Now, for a test passed. We just rode Harvey out about 10 miles from initial landfall north of Corpus. It got exciting overnight but come morning, we were still here, had a roof to look up at, and went about the role of protector of the block, seeing as how it turns out we were the only ones who stayed. Rained and blew all day the next day too, finally got down under trop force winds and the rain finally subsided about dark the day after landfall, so I drug out the generator and ran a couple hours for the fridges' sakes. (We had lost power at 5 pm on Friday afternoon, 24-26 hrs before first run of genny.) Drove out to the farm, and caught a cell signal, texted neighbor and that resulted in breaking into his house at his request, and running a wire over to plug in his fridge and deep freeze. (That little gesture has netted us quite a measure of gratitude from them, as it saved their full freezer. They DO remember and they're the kind of folks who will return that favor with interest.)

We needed nothing, but expressed gratitude and thanks to those who came through the neighborhood over the next few days/weeks passing out MRE's, water bottles, and the like. (Gray man theory.) It also gave us cover to turn around and pass out more than we took to others in the neighborhood who needed more acutely than we did.

The only thing we were short on, and needed to go in search of, was gasoline for the generator, and that was by design and not strictly necessary, as I was prepared to can everything we didn't manage to eat or feed out before it went bad. It did give me another cover to be a sheep, and go on forays for gasoline every other day for the 11 days we were without power.

All that said, had something blown at one of the plants/refineries encircling us, we'd have had to bug out, and further than the farm. I'm uneasy about having my eggs all in one basket. Being prepared and pre-positioned at a distant location isn't as important as the driving desire that I at least want a place to LAY an egg if I need to, to butcher the old saying :D

Brings me to a question I've wanted to ask here for a few days but can't find the proper sub-forum to stick it in: Does anybody know of a discreet and reputable real estate type somewhere in the upper Nueces River watershed (preferable) or elsewhere inland enough and away enough from refinery row on the Gulf coast? Thinking Texas Hill Country is the most likely "good" spot for us since it's sort of close, sparsely populated, and reachable without going through any real population centers. (Also, if anyone has a suggestion of a different "room" for me to pose this question, let me know and I'll do it.)

Try going into that area and getting ahold of a few phone books and also news papers for that local. Some times walking into a shoping store you can sometime find real estate sales papers much like a news paper but with real estate sales covering the local area and near by area. These real estate news papers are always free for the taking.

This too shall pass.
I'm 60 and my handicapped daughter is 37. Physically, if we had to bug out on foot, we could do it, but would be slow. If we had to leave, we would plan on leaving in our vehicle. But realistically there isn't much that would be reason for us to leave here, or the new place we'll be moving to in Kentucky in the spring (it's quite rural).
