Two squatters who took over NYC home of woman found beaten to death, stuffed in duffel bag sought for murder: cops

Published March 21, 2024, 4:35 p.m. ET

Two squatters are being sought over the gruesome murder of a 52-year-old woman whose body was found stuffed in a duffel bag inside her late mother’s upscale Manhattan apartment last week, police said Thursday.

The victim, Nadia Vitel, was savagely beaten by the two perps when she discovered them holed up inside the 19th-floor apartment on East 31st Street last week, according to cops.

Having just flown in from Spain, Vitel had gone to her late mom’s apartment — which had been vacant for roughly three to four months — to start prepping it so a family friend could move in.

“We believe that some squatters took the apartment over and this woman came home … and walked in on the squatters that were there,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.

The brutal beatdown left Vitel with blunt force trauma to the head, multiple facial fractures, a brain bleed and two broken ribs, cops said.

The perps — who the NYPD haven’t identified publicly — were captured on surveillance video fleeing the apartment after the slaying and making off in the dead woman’s Lexus SUV.

They fled across the George Washington Bridge through New Jersey to Pennsylvania, where they ultimately crashed the SUV in Lower Paxton Township, cops said.

The NYPD wasn’t alerted until the following day, though, because Pennsylvania cops didn’t immediately run the plates and see that the vehicle was wanted in a homicide, Kenny said.

Cops said the squatters, who remained on the lam Thursday, had visited several local car dealerships in the aftermath of the wreck to try and buy a new car for $1,000.
The developments come after Vitel’s son, Michael Medvedev, 19, made the grim discovery of his mother’s body when he went to the apartment with the building’s super on the afternoon of March 14 after not hearing from her in 48 hours.

He knew she’d been at the apartment because they tracked each other’s locations via their cellphones, police said.

“As they’re getting ready to leave, the son opens up the closet door near the front door and discovers the duffel bag with a foot sticking out,” Kenny said.
It wasn’t immediately clear how long the perps had been squatting in the apartment before the victim found them inside, or how they even managed to gain access in the first place.

“The apartment itself is very unique in that there’s no front door to apartment. You take an elevator up and then you key your way in. The elevator is actually your front door,” Kenny said, adding “it’s an upscale apartment.”

While cops haven’t disclosed the identity of the two suspects, police sources previously described them as a man and woman in their 20s.

“As of right now, we have probable cause, we have two subjects, we have the Regional Fugitive Task Force actively hunting as we speak,” Kenny said, adding that one of the squatters has a prior arrest to their name.

One could foresee a growing trend whereby predatory squatters simply show up at older folks homestead and simply disappear the owners and assume ownership. Could become epidemic, particularly with that video of illegal teaching his homies they can just take over vacant homes and get away with it

Unfortunate to say the least, but at least to some extent likely to occur, repeatedly.

We should just take over writing factual articles for news organizations. This is in an article from 6 days ago in same newspaper but not referenced in current article. They always omit the good stuff.

Two unidentified individuals were captured on surveillance footage leaving a Manhattan apartment just days before the 52-year-old tenant’s body was found stuffed in a duffel bag in her closet, police sources said Friday.

The pair, described as a black male and a black female both in their 20s, were then spotted getting into the dead woman’s Lexus SUV with New York license plates and driving west on East 31st Street.

Apparently they already fly crews in to do some of the high end robberies- I can see it becoming profitable to come in and commandeer real estate that is then "rented out" to others

Buying an out of state home and land...it is vacant, waiting for the new owners...

Unfortunately for the squatters, the new owners are rolling in heavy and clearing the premises... silly squatters, not all Americans are worthless twats.

YES, More Of This

In California squatters are taking over people’s properties so this company called Squatter Squad is coming in and REMOVING THEM

If they don’t want to come out & prove they’re on the lease, they’ll rip the doors off the property and force them out

If we can’t count on the government, which we pay taxes to, to have our backs it looks like our fellow Americans will do it!

Upscale real estate is going to take the same hit that commercial real estate is.

The collapse of South Africa was facilitated with the governments refusal to honour property rights and the property owners right to defend their holdings with extreme prejudice.
How many times have any of us watched a vid of the groups of persons forcing a gate to swarm a farm in SA and said to ourselves,
"I would kill everyone who crossed the fence and broken gate line."
Only to see the hired security and land owners shoot above the mobs heads and pepper them with bird shot from long ranges???
Why? because the looters have the backing of the government and "law enforcement"! They are emboldened by such reactions, in this national example many property owners knew what would happen when the mob reached their families! The PTBs are going to take your property away anyhow! Drop a cupla dozen inside your lines scrape the residue into a pile and burn. Send your family away and force the government to show its true face thru their "official" response to your action against a murderous mob!
Repeat if necessary and when the official uniformed response arrives add some of them to the compost pile then retreat have an escape route, burn everything of value and salt the earth.
This same concept applies to just a home owner, or condo and land just in a smaller scale.
Without absolute property rights nothing else matters or is safe!
Just because you left your home for a few days only to return to find new residents and there is nothing the police can and will do about the situation ( depends on state and location) . legally the only option you have is a eviction or civil suit that may take six months or a year to complete not including the lawyer fees and court costs only to be rewarded just before court date with a massively damaged recently vacated property that most likely your homeowners insurance will refuse cover.
When you pay your protection monies (taxes)to the government and this is the best you can expect no wonder there is such talk about CWII.

Sorry for the rant..... But this subject kinda sticks in my craw.

That has to be one of the most poorly structured, incomprehensible headlines our All-Star American media has ever cobbled together. :strs:
Ah, journalism... we hardly knew ya!

In a doctor's waiting room recently I glanced through a "55 and over" mag of some kind. Slick production, but (like everything these days) written at about a 4th grade level.

First story I saw was talking about someone who had been injured and "spent seven weeks in a comma"!!

Editing is a dead art.

Squatters in custody after woman found dead in duffel bag in Manhattan apartment

ABC News

The 52-year-old victim died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Two suspected squatters have been taken
into custody for questioning after they allegedly killed a woman who walked in on them living in her mother's New York City apartment, police sources told ABC News.
The victim, Nadia Vitel, a 52-year-old woman from Spain, came to the U.S. to prepare her mother's Manhattan apartment for a family friend, sources said. The Kips Bay apartment had been vacant for the last few months after Vitel's mother died, sources said.
When Vitel went inside, she found a man and a woman living there, the sources said.
A struggle ensued, and it appears Vitel was thrown into a sheetrock wall, sources said.
The two suspects then allegedly stole Vitel's Lexus and drove to New Jersey and then Pennsylvania, where they crashed near Harrisburg, sources said.

They were taken into custody on Friday in York, Pennsylvania, sources said.

On March 14, Vitel's worried son, who hadn't heard from his mother in two days, accessed the Kips Bay apartment with the superintendent and other relatives, and found his mom's body, sources said. Vitel's body was in a duffel bag in a closet, with her foot sticking out of the bag, sources said.
Vitel died from blunt force trauma to the head and her death was ruled a homicide, officials said.

The only thing going to the victim's family is that the victim was a woman and apparently not typical "white". Otherwise I'd expect the perps to be out in a matter of days.

(I never know what to do with the Spanish. I have a mostly Spanish cousin who got through law school as a Latino. To me, he is as American as I am, but he rode the "minority" wave as far as it would get him.)

Should be shoot to kill squatter laws. It would stop. Should be shoot to kill illegal border terrorists laws.

They can kill you and be out in hours.
I would certainly be afraid for my life and the lives of my family members if i found someone trespassing and hiding in my home - ready to murder and steal from us - and I would have no choice but to use lethal force in defense of our lives.

I give up.
Nadia was white.

The individuals, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old, are now facing charges related to Vitel's death. Specifics on the charges weren't immediately clear, nor were details regarding their capture.
