Yep, X-flares are the big ones. X 3.9 isn't the largest, but it is big enough to do some damage, especially to orbital objects and some things (like radio or power stations) on the ground.

The theory that Solar Flares cause Earthquakes is an alternative one, just like the theory that earthquakes are connected to Lunar and Tidal cycles. I suspect there IS a connection, but solar flares don't always mean Earthquakes any more than every Full Moon comes with a large quake. It can, but it doesn't happen every time.

Well, they say to dress in layers for adverse weather....maybe some kevlar thrown in there at some point? Outside of the bubble wrap, maybe, so you don't lose its protection?

If you are really concerned about it, go around and unplug stuff in the house and don't be charging your cell phone & laptop by wire to the wall. Put the car in the garage. Keep some fire extinguishers handy. It'll make you feel like you are doing something, and it "might' actually help if/when a bad one ever does comes down the road.
Thing is - nobody really knows how a powerful CME would affect the modern world. My guess - an event like this one on the weekend - maybe could fizzle a few unlucky satellites or fry some power grid stuff. But I seriously doubt it. The guys up in the space station or whatever they call it these days might be taking some precautions, but that's a different deal. They are bare-azzed up there.

Back in the 80's I spent a lot of time in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. There were some fantastic northern lights. One in particular was waves of color that passed right over us.
I think I'll try to take a nap this afternoon and stay up past 10pm for a change.
