Donald,

Real sorry to hear that. I remember the countdown to ?????? thread and that you had achieved “vested” status of some sort.

Does that mean that you will continue to receive your benefits and retirement now?

If so, think about self-employment. It's even more secure than government. :)

Oh, Donald! I'm SO sorry! Then again, considering your attitude, maybe it's a relief to have the other shoe dropped, and not have to worry about when it was coming.:lol:

Prayers for you and the missus.

Thanks, Folks.

Howdy, Folks!

I guess I'll have LOTS of time to spend @ all hours on TB2K, Hmm?

:lol:

Seriously...

SO wrote:

Well...not really. I'm now "tenured," so I am eligible for retirement benefits and health care upon either:

A. My retirement from State Gubmint(not an issue @ the moment...)

B. Being eligible for retirement in some other fashion - age, or disability. If either of those things happen, my bennies kick in.

So, the big deal - in my old age, I'll have health benefits(as long as the State of Texas exists, of if the Legislature doesn't do away with them). BIG weight off my shoulders, there.

They did give me a "severance" package(I'm on Administrative Leave - state paid leave that doesn't eat into my vacation time - for two weeks. Then , I go on Vacation leave), so I'm not completely high and dry.

COBRA will kick in after about a month or two, so health's covered for quite some time. Gotta check Missus Shimoda's setup - it may be cheaper to add on tho hers instead of COBRA.

I am also eligible for Unemployment Insurance, should I wish it.

PLUS - we ARE preppers, after all. ;) I've planned for this, for either one or both of us. We're in good shape. :)

~~~~~~~~
Yeah - I am kicking around the Self Employ thing - have been, for a while.
Actually - this is the swift kick in the tuckus I needed to make me get out there and DO sompin'. I was just telling some folks this morning:
"If only 1% of the 10,000 that gets laid off - that's 100 people - go out and start bid'nesses up, think about how many jobs they'll create!"
Methinks it's time to practice what I preached this a.m.
Missus Shimoda thinks so, too. :)
Gonna pop out for a while - got a date with a former co-worker to go to a MooVee tonight(Missus Shimoda is taking her folks out for dinner; had been planning to for over a week now. It's their 50th wedding anniversary today!).
So...Ill check in a little later tonight; hey, it's not like I hafta get up early tomorrow!
:lol:
Good luck Don
Up here in steel country folks are hurting. Indiana has lost 4 or 5 percent of its job across the state, with manufacturing taking the heaviest hit.
Sorry to hear about this. Perhaps it will wind up working to your advantage down the road.
Don, I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. Been 'outsourced' twice myself and it's a crappy feeling. But you've got a good attitude and I wish you and the missus the best of luck!
Chin up and all that.
You're a survivor. You'll do OK.
Sorry to hear it Don. I imagine even though you were prepared, it is still something of a shock, isn't it? Happened to me 2 months ago. I'll be okay for a while, but damn, doesn't it make you boil to think what you did is no longer needed? Everyone I talk to at the old place is still shaking their head, but hey, decisions were made, and you can't change was has happened. Good Luck, and I'm sure you'll be happier working for yourself, no matter what you do.:)
Tough go. Don't wait to get going on your self employment. Getting established ealier is better than later. Times is a gonna get tuffer.
DS
Sorry to hear it. Things are ugly all over the place.
A word of advice, apply and get your unemployment insurance before you breathe a word of "self employment" "start a company", etc.
I worked up here steady for 10 years in the 80's, paid wayyyy more in taxes than the average canadian did, then quit and went further north to try desktop publishing.
Made a big mistake with being honest when I applied for what was rightfully mine. Seems like if you are "self employed" or trying to be, even though not one penny can be seen on the horizon, gosh, you are no longer entilted to any kind of unemployment payments.
It may work the same down there. Better to protect your family than to be honest with government pinheads.
So sorry, kiddo. I am there too. Most states, you con't collect unemployment until your severance is used up, using your prior salary as a base. After that, go for the UE. You payed into it your whole working life.
I got layed off 4/7 and my severence period just ended. Now I will get about $366 a week UE. Not enough to pay all bills, but better than nothing. I hate it, but gotta get it.
BTW, the MN unemployment office is so busy that they are hiring! :D More money than the UE compensation. You get paid even more if you speak Spanish, Hmong, Somali etc. Don't EVEN get me started on that! :fgr: Check out your UE office for jobs.
Also, a lot of the Vocational Counseling services are mighty busy these days!
Good luck to you Sir!
Geeze, tough break, Donald! Listen to SO on the self-employment thing. That's what I did when I got canned last August. I ain't gettin' rich but I ain't starvin' either. :lol:
Seriously, best of luck to you, even though it sounds like you're prepped for it.
Don, so sorry to hear this happened to you. Thoughts and prayers in transit. Be sure to check out all the FREE training and retraining money available. In AZ, depending upon circumstances, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, you can get up to $3000 as a displaced worker. In many states you can plug into these programs at a local OneStop center.
Sorry to hear about your new "freedom".
Concur with what others have said about "mum's the word" if you are thinking about self employment. One inkling you may be "self employed", even if you don't have a single bit of work, no cash flow, nuthin .... and you are off the UE wagon immediately in most places.
For me it was the best thing that ever happened (years ago), but took me a while to figure that out.
Figure out what direction you want to go .... and start moving there IMMEDIATELY. Give yourself a couple of weeks off to decompress, then dive in. If you wait around it becomes more difficult.
Best of luck.
I love your attitude, Don. It's the "can do, make my own way" spirit that made this country great. Sure am glad you're prepped and will be okay. I do echo everyone's sympathy and good wishes.
That's the way the cookie crumbles. From the small businesses I see closing (permanently) I think its only going to get worse. Its really frustrating because there are so many people who are in denial (it makes them feel safer, but not me) about the taxes and budget problems. The benefits/disability scams have gone wild. There's nobody left to pay the tab. (big DUH)
Thanks Everybody!
Howdy, Folks!
Nice to sleep in a little later. ;)
Still, I was out late last night, and won't be making a habit of this. :lol:
Gotta keep a decent schedule...
Former co-worker I went out with last night was astonished, and concerned. Not too concerned for me, but for himself; he's in our IT department(weathered several rounds of layoffs, so it looks like he'll do okay), which is certainly not a field to get laid off from these days.
No...reason he was worried about himself:
"If I were in your shoes, I'd lose my house and possibly my car about a week after my last paycheck."
:confused:
What IS it with people these days?
This guy's SMART, he gets it. Still, he's like so many others out there, leveraged out the A$$.
Weird to me, especially since he's not married, and no kids. You gotta wonder...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Taking stock of the situation(and if Missus Shimoda doesn't lose her job), I can sit @ home and do nothing and maintain for 8 years, if I stretch it. This won't allow for any extra purchases(building materials for the house come to mind), so figgering those in I'm guessing more like 2-4 years. If The Missus loses her job, we could "maintain" for prolly about 2 years(she's got way more exensive health issues than I do).

If I wanna take a 50% pay hit, I can get a job today in state gub'mint; there are several out there right now that are literally going a'beggin'. That'd get me bennies, and kee me from dipping into savings/preps.

However, dunno if'n I wanna go that route. ;) Besides, thery're the kinds of jobs that'll be there in two years, if I don't create or find sompin' else to my liking.

There's two businesses I'd really like to own and operate in Austin; both are currently up and running now, but in different locations. I'm going to sit down with the owners(both are locally owned and operated), and float the idea of a "franchaise" in the location I'm interested in. If nothing else, I think they'd be interested in going into the areas themselves; one may certainly be looking for a business partner in a new location(or someone to franchaise out her business - it would be the first of such).

Only drawback to the above; the area is gonna be under develoment for the next 15 years. FIrst major "anchor" business(a children's hospital - both of the businesses in question would service the hospital staff and the patients and their families very well) will be up and running in about 3 years. SO...I can literally get in on the "ground floor"(and the city is offering incentives for local bid'nesses to come into the area), but it'll be kind of a long wait. This would be more like a "marriage" in that I'd need to commit for many years to this venture before I could even think of getting out of it(turnkey, or just wanting to change). There are plusses and minuses to that, I suppose...

[Hehehehe...using my doomer/prepper mentality, I can also scrounge materials for one of the said bid'nesses from liquidators and auctions, as well as HFH, dumpsters, and other "sources." I know how to keep startup costs down. ;)

Then there's always retraining; education is always good.

I've also got some different ideas on some other projects I'd like to embark upon.

My former boss(before the one I just left) is in bid'ness for herself, doing GREAT. She's said before she'd love to work with me again. The work she's doing fascinates me, so that's a possible option. Need to send her an e-mail this morning, touch base...

There are a coulpa art projects I've been wanting to work on; now would be a GREAT time to launch into those.

FInally - I can make more money(via saving) by doing the house restoration work myself, instead of hiring someone to do it. "Sweat Equity" - it woulda cost me about three times what I was making to pay someone to come in and do what I can do. This I like - I can imrove the value of my home, have a nice place to live, and save money - all @ the same time! What's not to like?

[Added bonus - by staying home and keeping busy, there's less incentive to get out and spend money. Junketing about town costs gas, and there's always the lure of a greasy spoon diner or sompin' like that when out on the road, instead of a nice bowl of solar-cooked rice 'n' beans after swingin' a hammer. ;) ]

So, really; my main problem @ this point is:

I have too many options!

Not a bad position to be in, I guess. :D

Thanks for all the support 'n' kind words; really, this is gonna be good!

Now, off to fix my lovely wife and I some breakfast(she took the day off - yesterday was a "stresser" for her, with my little bit of "news" and dealing with her folks)...

More later!
