BRKG Gabrielle Gifford Being Flown Now Via CNN

Giffords will be flown to Houston hospital Friday

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) -- In less than two weeks, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a bullet through her brain, has seemingly whizzed by milestones.
First, it was the little things.
She opened her eyes. She squeezed her husband's hands. She was able to breathe on her own.
In recent days, the Arizona congresswoman flipped through an iPad, stood with assistance and gave husband Mark Kelly a neck massage.
Thursday, she got a beautiful reward for all the positive steps she and the University Medical Center team have accomplished.
Taken outside for physical therapy, Giffords got perhaps her last look for awhile of the majestic mountains around Tucson before she flies Friday morning to Houston for further treatment.
"To be so responsive as she is now and processing as well as she has, has been very good for her," trauma surgeon Peter Rhee told CNN's John King.
Rhee, who will travel with Giffords for the medical handoff at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, spoke of the challenges ahead.
Giffords will need to be able to express the thoughts she's processing, the doctor said. Getting full use of her right leg and arm are also important. She is not yet able to walk or stand independently.
Accompanied by a VFW motorcycle escort, Giffords will be transported around 9:15 a.m. by ambulance to nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, according to the congresswoman's office.
Giffords rode with Veterans of Foreign Wars riders in May 2009, when they escorted the remains of Civil War-era veterans from Tucson to Sierra Vista.
The Air Force will fly Giffords on a Challenger aircraft to Houston's William P. Hobby Airport, arriving around 1:15 p.m, the office said. A helicopter will take her to Memorial-Hermann.
In addition to Kelly and Rhee, accompanying Giffords on the flight from Tucson will be:
-- Tracy Culbert, one of her nurses in University Medical Center's intensive care unit
-- Gloria Giffords, her mother
-- Pia Carusone, her chief of staff
-- C.J. Karamargin, her communications director.
Asked about a sense of optimism at UMC, Rhee said it's been a "team effort" to aid Giffords' recovery.
"We can't undo the tragedy on [January] 8th, but I think the community here and the extended community in the country has really taken the opportunity to rally behind" the congresswoman, Rhee told CNN.
Six people died and 13 were wounded January 8 when a suspect, identified as Jared Lee Loughner, 22, opened fire at a Tucson shopping center during a Giffords meet-and-greet event. She was shot at close range.
Kelly on Thursday said Giffords' family looked at several different rehabilitation facilities and liked TIRR Memorial Hermann, part of the Texas Medical Center, for several reasons.
Among them: The medical team there specializes in penetrating head injuries like the one Giffords has suffered, and it is relatively close to Tucson.
The move also will allow Kelly, a NASA astronaut, to resume his duties in Houston, Rhee said. He can't predict how Giffords will do in the long term, he said.
Still, Kelly and surgeons have been strongly encouraged by Giffords' progress.
She will continue to receive intense physical and speech therapy at Memorial Hermann, with a team led by Dr. John Holcomb, a retired Army colonel.
Kelly told reporters Thursday he believes his wife has tried to speak, although she is prevented from doing so by a breathing tube in her neck, and believes she is aware of her surroundings, saying he can look in her eyes and tell.
She will smile at him and pat him on the face -- something she did before the shooting and that she usually only does when he is around, he said.
"Every time I interact with her, there's something quite inspiring," he said.
Outside the Tucson hospital, a collection of flowers, signs and other effects continues to grow.
"We have seen too many stars to let the darkness overwhelm us," one heart-shaped sign read. "Keep shining Gabby."

Aw, come on, guys!!

This stuff does happen (a lot more frequently than you know... talk to any big city trauma doc and they see people survive- with various levels of deficits- head shots at least weekly, if not more often.

Let's not go overboard taking the Biblical prophecies out of context. Mrs Giffords was very, VERY fortunate, and has a long road ahead of her. But she's not the AntiChrist or even a Type for him. Sheesh.

While I am glad Giffords continues to improve, I wonder if her health insurance is picking up the tab for this along with transporting her there. The rest of us would be relegated to the nearest facility that was on our plan as a 'take it or leave it' option.

If only we had a list of all the candidates thought to be possibly the AC thru the centuries, we could all have a good laugh. Long list.

When he shows up, half the people on here will support him vigorously. I honestly think we're getting close...

We're all going to have to be VERY vigilant. There is an awful lot of "human worship" in various places on the 'net, including groups you'd think would know better. We need to realize that NO ONE HUMAN is going to fix things for us at this late date.

(it won't surprise me at all if the AntiChrist actually appears to be a religious, conservative man)

I suspect that the Subro might be interesting since she might ALSO be covered by her husband's plan, as a dependent. That along with the Congress' health plan...

You might be surprised WHAT your own plan covers, when you present the treatment plan correctly. Of course, living in the Medical Mecca of the US (Cleveland, OH) we have a lot of options many don't have....

(This is ONE of the VERY FEW negatives to moving down outside of Fort Worth.)

As Susan Powder used to day, "Stop the madness".

Giffords is NOT the Anti-Christ.

Who said she was the Anti Christ?...One does have to admit it is strange how she was announced to be dead and then alive....she really seems to be having a MIRACULOUS recovery after such a major head injury..

I'd say she is being flown to houston because her husband will commandeer the next space shuttle...and IIRC his twin is in the International space station.

I'd say keep an open mind about what we think we know...God loves a good Musterion (Mystery)....blessings T

All though I agree with the point you are making. I have never in 21 yrs in EMS seen anyone get up and walk again after being shot in the head! over 90% died or later died from other complications and those that did survive ended up being in a nursing home. Now I have seen 3 live to tell the tail of how they stuck a weapon underneath there chin and pulled the trigger and blew their faces off.

It just plain depends on WHERE the bullet travelled, what caliber it was, whether it fragmented and a dozen other factors you can call miracles or luck...

I'd say her recovery is very close to miraculous, but I'll note that she's not "walking" at this point... she has very limited use of her right side and can't stand or walk without considerable assistance.

It also is likely that her "Name" was a factor in how aggressively they pursued her treatment, although I know that's not something people want to hear.

I'm not saying that they don't try to save the gangbangers that come in, but they probably start talking about organ donation, etc a whole lot earlier than they might with a bigwig... no hospital wants to be known as the place where "so and so died", especially if there's any chance (second guessing or not) they could have been saved.

Very likely, 1/2" difference in the bullet path and she'd have had no chance at all.

Actually, Susan Powder Said,"Stop The Insanity", not that I was ever a follower of Ms. Powder, but She was renown for the above Catch Phrase,IIRC.

As for Giffords being the Anti-Christ, there is no where in my post that says I did, or that I thought She could be.

Just so everyone can rest their weary lit'l minds, I do NOT think Mrs. Giffords is the Anti-Christ, matter of fact I don't have my mind set looking for the Anti-Christ. I stay focused on My Heavenly Father,(Yehweh).

It is however miraculous that Mrs.Giffords is doing so well, as I have seen many pass away from a lesser gunshot wound, working in the ER for many years. Brain spatter isn't so pretty. She is a Very lucky Lady.

9mm. Rather small bullets, very fast and at close range may have done little damage per-se.

I've seen animals shot at close range by rifle in the .308 cal that did not know they were hit and likely would have take some time to die if they did.

As far as people taking one in the noggin...I remember several stories of men getting a pipe or metal spike rammed thru their heads from accidents and living quite well. In Psych there was a case of a guy that it happened to and his personality totally changed. I also remember at least one story where some guy had a steel rod about 4ft long blown thru his skull and he walked to assistance with it sticking out both sides of his head.

She didn't get up and walk, with help they stood her up beside her bed. Don't they try to do that to stave off blood clots? I knew a guy who had a severe head injury. He did walk again with a bad limp and although he was never "right" again he did recover some sense of normal.

I wish the congresswoman well and I do hope she can recover from this. If I don't like your politics I'll vote against you, but I sure do not wish this kind of harm on anyone. As far as her being the AC, give me a break.

Agreed ~ mainstream media gets ALOT wrong...but there are those who believe every word they hear and never consider anything else...I would love to know where they got that info in the first place.

I would also like to know who made the call to have her at the "safeway" outside without protection. The woman had already had death threats and someone drop a gun at one of her gatherings. I heard the local LEO that day being interviewed and he said they had no plan for the meeting. I think somebody dropped the ball big time on that. An armed guard would have probably took him out before he could kill all those people..heck they have more protection at the public school than she had that day~..blessings T

Sorry if I misinterpreted the implications of Caplocks post about it scaring him and your comment, "Me too..HEAD SHOT WOUND? Straight through her brain? Rises?
Hummm" immediately following as insinuation that this was heading that way. In my defense, I am not the only one who inferred that from those comments, apparently. I had seen and participated in the other thread on that subject and thought from those comments this one might be heading that way as well.

And thanks for setting me straight on the Susan Powder quote, too. I knew it was something like that! :)

Yep. I believe his name was Phineas Gage. I think he was tamping some dynamite in a drilled hole and it went off. Here's a pic where the metal rod blew threw his head...

WTH do you think would happen if 0bamacare was in play?

Oh wait.......congresscritters don't have the same health insurance as the great unwashed, do they?

Nothing against Giffords; I am thrilled she is doing so well. But the left has managed to politicize the hell out of this based on 'rhetoric'; why can't we politicize it based on reality?

It's been quite a while, but I do remember this.
He did what He had to do, and survived.

Another one, very lucky to survive.
I wish anyone, who is suffering, to hang in there, and when the rope seems to be getting shorter to hang onto...tie a knot in it, and hang on. The sun don't shine up the same dogs behind forever. :D

Good days in any case, back when this took place. You could take your family somewhere during the summer, and teach them the history, of this Great Nation, without being worried what you might have to feed them the following week.

Times have certainly changed for many good people. Many paid into SS all their working years and passed before getting at least 1%..naa.5%, of what they paid in.

"Life", and all one can do is take one day at a time, as that's all we're given, some not even that.

It's all good. Peace and Blessings,

Fought that for the next 8 years til she died this past Sept. Wonderful retirement for her and marriage ,too. Never know what tomorrow has in store for ya.

I really don't know what Ms. Powder is thinking of this situation.

I am sorry to hear of this BG. Prayers for you and your family, no matter how long ago your DS passed away.

I try to keep it simple, and if someone wants to make tentative plans with me on a day that has not come, I always say, "Today isn't over, and tomorrow may never come, so, let's wait and see",that way no one gets let down.

I don't know how anyone feels about NOT ever getting .1% of their SS PAID into SS, but I think all $$$ paid in by the FAMILY should go to the FAMILY,after a Death/s, even if it is in the form for any FAMILY children to go to college. I don't think SS money should go to illegals, or anyone else undeserving. College Loans are a huge cloud for any student, especially after graduation with the job market so grim, and the economy so bad. JMHO.

Bless You,
