VANCOUVER, Wash. — A 28-year-old woman severely burned when a stranger threw an acid-like liquid in her face was listed in serious condition in a Oregon hospital.

Bethany Storro, of Vancouver, Wash., was getting something out of her car in downtown Vancouver when the attack happened Monday evening, her mother Nancy Neuwelt told The Oregonian.

Neuwelt said a young woman walked up to her daughter, said: "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" and tossed a cup of liquid in Storro's face.

"I’m a nice girl and I don’t know why this happened," Storro, 28, said Tuesday in her hospital room in the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, The Columbian newspaper reported.

Storro said the pain was the most excruciating she had ever experienced, her mother told The Columbian.

"It was burning through her shirt. She took off her shirt and she was trying to wipe her face," Neuwelt said, according to the newspaper.

'Felt like her heart stopped'
Storro "kind of remembers walking in circles," Neuwelt added. "She felt like her heart stopped at one point."

She collapsed, screaming for help, only to realize she was not being heard. She got back up and stumbled toward a group of people, The Oregonian reported.

"Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers," Storro said in a written statement Tuesday, The Oregonian reported. "I appreciate all of the well wishes being sent my way. I do ask, if anyone should know the woman who assaulted me, please contact the Vancouver Police."

Neuwelt said her daughter was wearing a pair of sunglasses she had bought shortly before the attack and that may have saved her eyesight. Still, Storro's family said her face will take months to heal.

"It's very bizarre, very random and very weird, and we don’t understand it," Neuwelt told The Columbian, speaking by phone from her daughter's bedside.

"She’s having a hard time," she added. "It's changed her life now and her emotions are all over the place."

Recently moved to city
Neuwelt told The Columbian that her daughter had recently moved to Vancouver and was single with no children.

"She wanted to make a fresh start and this happened," Neuwelt, a worship leader and administrative assistant at a local church, told the paper. "Bethany is a really great, fun, energetic and adorable girl, and she didn’t deserve this."

"I am so disgusted with society right now!" Storro’s brother, Abraham Neuwelt of Seattle, said on his Facebook page, The Columbian reported.

"Yesterday my little sister got some form of acid thrown into her face while walking through downtown Vancouver, WA. She is currently in the hospital with severe burns and could face permanent damage. This incident was totally unprovoked and malicious in nature. If you believe in prayer, now is the time to ask for a full recovery and that the assailant be brought to justice!"

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said doctors and authorities were trying to determine what kind of substance caused Storro's facial burns.

Police said the assailant was described as a black woman between 25 and 35, who wore a green shirt and khaki shorts, The Columbian reported. She had medium-length black hair that was pulled back.

Something similar happened to me at a San Diego mall quite a few years ago.

As I was walking down the mall sidewalk some teen or 20-somethings drove by, yelled something unintelligible and threw some kind of liquid which hit my face & eyes.

Not knowing what it was - I quickly rushed into a mall store - found a water fountain and washed my face & eyes repeatedly. No injury suffered, and never found out what had been thrown, by whom or why. Nor did the local police give a damn.

No idea who or why - just a random act of criminal violence. Race was not an issue. But it scared the crap out of me.


Prayers for full recovery of the victim above, and hope they find and prosecute the perp to the very fullest extent of the law.

As we all know - if it was reversed - a white woman assaulting a black woman, every progressive in the country would be up in arms. Noting the victim's name and comments from her brother, they would be yelling to lock up the dangerous evangelicals! And no doubt by now the commie monkey would have been on tv seething his disgust for us crackers and calling for retribution.

In my 54 years, I can honestly say I have never been racist. Even when the commie monkey was running for pres and my friend called me racist for not voting for him. I can also honestly say that over the last 12 months I know what it is like to have racist thoughts.

I hate what they have done to our country. And I hate what I have become because of it. But it is not only race, as we all know. It is about destroying the cracker USA and remaking it for them. For the patriotic and warrior thoughts I have - I am NOT sorry!

Doctor: Vancouver woman burned by extremely 'strong acid'

The doctor of a 28-year-old Vancouver woman who was severely burned Monday night by a stranger who doused her with acid, will perform surgery on her face this afternoon.

Dr. Nick Eshraghi, a burn surgeon for the Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, said that during the approximately 90-minute surgery he will attempt to remove as much damaged skin from Bethany Storro’s face, without doing any further damage.

Storro's condition was upgraded from serious to fair today, hospital officials said.

Storro, who had just moved to Vancouver from Idaho to live with her parents and had just started a new job at the Washhougal Safeway deli, was getting something from the passenger side of her car in downtown Vancouver at around 7:40 p.m. Monday when a woman walked up to her.

“She said, ‘Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?’” Storro's mother, Nancy Neuwelt said. The woman then threw a cup of acid in her face.

Storro described the woman as an African-American woman in her late 20s, to early 30s, with slicked-back hair in a pony tail. She was wearing a green shirt and khaki shorts.

Dr. Eshraghi said after testing the substance he determined that was an acid with a pH of 1, which puts it in the classification of sulfuric and hydrochloric acid. He called it an extremely "strong acid.”

“She’s doing reasonably well considering the circumstances,’’ Eshragi said at a news conference today. “She has a mixture of second degree burns, and perhaps deeper burns on her face. Fortunately her eyes were spared.”

Storro’s mother said her daughter was wearing sunglasses that evening, something she rarely did. Eshraghi said the burns covered her entire face except for her eyelids and her eyes.

He said it was too early to tell how extensive the scarring would be to Storro’s face, which remains considerably swollen from the burns.

When she was first brought into the hospital doctors used water to flush as much of the acid away as they could. That was followed by the application of antibiotic ointments to prevent infection and to keep her skin from drying out.

“It’s the depth of the injury in the under layer of the skin called the dermis that determines whether that skin is going to heal or going to have scarring,’’ Eshraghi said. “Some areas do look deep to me.”

Eshraghi said if the burn had occurred anywhere else on her body other than her face, she would probably being going home today, where she could heal for awhile and then come back for treatment. Instead, he performed the surgery today.

“But because it’s such an important area on her face, I’m going to try and do something different than the traditional approach to wound care to try and minimize her scarring,’’ he said.

Eshraghi described Storro's demeanor as "quite anxious and quite tearful...she is, of course, very scared,'' he said, "and worried about what this all means for her future."

Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department, said detectives have been going door to door in the area and interviewing anyone who might have seen Monday's attack.

She said the department may be able to generate a computer generated composite of the suspect based on Storro’s description or any other witnesses in the next several days.

"At this point we're relying on good old fashioned police work,'' Kapp said

Going to play devil's advocate for a second: is it possible that the assailant would have done this to the first attractive woman she saw (jealousy, perhaps?) regardless of race? She did say, "pretty girl", not "white girl".

Assailant clearly has an evil streak/mental issues. I agree about hoping it's on a security camera.

As long as we are all in the assumptions stage, I can play further in devil's advocate mode, with just as few facts on my side.

Her mom said that the move to Vancouver was to get a "fresh start". Here, that usually means a f'd up druggie kid is trying to leave a bad start in life behind. So it makes just as much sense that some past bad business caught up with her, as it does that the fact that the assailant's abundance of pigment vs. the victim's lack of pigment suggests the start of a race war.

Nobody knows yet. I think that covers all the guesses, but maybe there are other possibilities. She said the woman had a ponytail, a green shirt and khaki pants. Maybe Gap shoppers enraged by poor dressers invading their turf in Vancouver?

What I absolutely agree with is the assessment of an assailant with a mean streak and mental issues. The heinous nature of the crime speaks for itself on those issues.

An assailant with a cup of strong acid who makes a statement before throwing it in the face of a woman suggests absolute premeditation.

The fact that the statement in the article reads, "Hey pretty girl" doesn't mean the statement actually wasn't, "Hey, pretty, white girl" and the police are with holding that information to keep tensions down in the area.

I'm just being bigoted, spewing race hatred, etc. I grew up in that type enviroment when I was a kid in elementary school and got assualted daily. Luckily my dad lost his job and my family finally moved.

Lets just say I'm in a safe zone now. LOL!

OSHA sign in my yard reads Assault free [40] years. Shouldn't I get an insurance break for that?

There's no evidence this is a hate crime and the fact that the perpertrator was black and the victim was white makes it practically impossible that it would be a hate crime. If it's not a hate crime, then it must be either an ambivalent crime, which is doubtful given the attacker went out of the way to use acid or it was a love crime, but that would be an oxymoron, since you wouldn't throw acid on someone you love. The only logic conclusion is that no crime was commited at all. Move along peasants... nothing to see here.

I find these random acts of violence to be the most scary since they could happen to anyone at any time. There's just know sense to it. I really hope that they will catch her and lock her up before she hurts someone else.

Someone mentioned that this could happen to anyone anytime.

In this situation, what do you guys think someone could do to:

1. anticipate this is a possibility about to happen

2. prevent it

3. protect yourself from it

4. what to do immediately after it happens if it happens

etc, etc, etc ????????

Maybe, but they seem to happen most often in places where people are known to be unarmed.

1. That would've been a strange thing to anticipate.
2. Ignoring everyone around you probably isn't a good idea. That's the only prevention I could see.
3. If your reflexes are good, you could knock the container back at her.
4. Chase her down and rub your face all over hers!

I try denfoote, believe me, I try...

I hate to make statements like that, but it is how I feel...

I work with several black people every day at my office. We all get along just fine. One does have a bit of an attitude (NWA), but we get past it. I know he has a "good heart" when all is said and done...

I have a couple black friends. One in particular, a wood-worker / musician, is a very good, very long time friend. I'ld give him the shirt off my back if he needed it, and I'm sure he would do the same for me...

I guess it's like the Muslim problem. There are lots of good Muslims, but there are also terrorist Muslims. There are lots of good black people, but there are also "******s"...

I don't know, it just seems like the bad vs. good ratio for black people is much higher these days, more than Muslims, more than any other "group"...

The problem is, when TSDHTF, lots of otherwise good people are going to get hurt, because of crap like this story...

Like most things, my answer has become, "Move to Montana" (or Idaho, Wyoming, etc.) And even there I would avoid big cities. Cities breed crime. Farms and ranches breed hard workers (my opinion).

I imagine very similar discussions taking place amongst black folks, when one of them is attacked senselessly by a white person. How quick we are, to judge an entire race of people, for the despicable actions of just a few...

Yes it makes your blood boil...
Yes it makes one want revenge/justice, whatever you want to call it.
But I'd like to think that common sense might prevail when we are stirred to anger by our fellow man. At least I would hope so.

Blind hatred based on skin color is like an acid...it eats away at our humanity, and makes us say and do things we normally wouldn't dream of.

If that statement makes some of you uncomfortable...then so be it. Perhaps it will make you think before spewing your poisonous vitriol, for all the world to see.

the fact that I live in a Portland, Oregon suburb and never once in the news in the last three days has anyone mentioned that the assailant was black. What a bunch of wussies we have for reporters. Prayers for the young lady, I think she's a trouper. But what a crock our commercial news media spews! All upset and sympathetic, but never mentioning that this was a black on white crime!

WRT interracial crime- when whites commit violence, they to it to blacks 2.4 percent of the time. Blacks, on the other hand, choose white victims more than half the time. And an even greater disparity exists in interracial rape- it is almost statistically always a black perp. I really doubt if there are many of those discussions among blacks "when one of them is attacked senselessly by a white person"

Early on the morning of Friday, July 30, a 23-year-old woman was attacked in the parking lot of the Hampton’s apartment complex, 2549 South Meridian St.

Police, responding to a 911 call just before 5 a.m. found a woman was covered with chemical burns to her face and eyes in the parking lot.

She said she had been approached by the man, who said he was locked out of his apartment and asked for a glass of water.

The woman, who was carrying a taser, went into her apartment and returned with the water.

When she handed him the water, he threw a liquid on her face and ran off. She attempted to fire off her taser, but failed.

The suspect is described as a black male with medium skin tone, standing approximately five foot ten inches with a husky build. He is believed to be in his mid to late twenties and was last seen wearing a plain navy blue hoodie type sweatshirt, jeans, and white tennis shoes. He also should have two distinctive marks on his right cheek.

The Puyallup Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in this case. Please contact the Puyallup Police Department’s Tip Line at (253) 770-3343.

But, with regards to the crime in general (not referring to the rape, necessarily), doesn't it make sense that blacks victimize whites more often than members of their own race? There are more white people in our nation, so the pool of potential black victims is much smaller than the pool of potential white victims. I don't know....just thinking out loud.

I would agree- there are more Whites, thus, there ought to be more White victims; thats logical.

What does get me is why black males (6% of the US population) are responsible for the majority of violent crime (for example they commit 54% of all murders) how do we explain that? And, more importantly, how do we and our families translate this information in our daily life?
