I have been to Mexico many, many times from the 60's to the mid 80's and always had a great time with only good stuff happening, but there's no way I'd go in this day and age.

I've been so deep into Mexico they'd never seen a white guy with blonde hair, but that was in the old days.

Just returned from Mexico...

8 days in Cabo San Lucas.... wonderful safe trip. No federales' in sight with the exception of the airport. Granted Cabo is sort of isolated on the tip of the Baja peninsula.

I'd definitely avoid the border areas and all of Mexico proper.

Next stop Cozumel???

Mexico is sliding into a cesspool of anarchy. You have to wonder how much the government and military can withstand. The gangs seem to keep growing stronger and i have no doubt the police and parts of the military are part of the problem.

If you think illegal immigration is a problem now? Try legal immigration (in the international sense), with 10's of thousands of fleeing refugees spilling into the south US. Mexico should ask for US intervention to go down there and wack some heads before the whole north of Mexico is a battle zone. JMO

I would not go to Mexico if you paid me. Nor would I go into any country that is not a former British colony with Judeo-Christian based democratic institutions, as they have no real guarantees of freedom and human rights and I don't trust their legal systems.

El presidente recently called for the legalization of all drugs. Overnight, the gangs would disperse... of course they'd come to the US if we didn't coordinate our legalization with them... when will we learn? (and by we, I don't mean myself:D )

mzkitty: Another developing story (last post) of News form South of the Border thread: http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?p=3838206#post3838206

Of an abduction of five tourist in Nayarit, Mexico, from their luxury hotel suite is another benchmark of cartels movement into kidnap for ransom, they are trying to scrub this story as we speak, this one will not be publicized, but will still try to run it down during the next couple of days.

Don't give deecee any ideas :shk: Nevertheless, the cartels are already here, just stay in the shadows.

Early this summer a friend's daughter moved to Mexico for a work/study assignment. A couple weeks ago my friend and her son just returned from a visit there. They went all over the countryside and had a wonderful time.

These are reasonable, intelligent, fun-loving adults who know the language and enjoy the culture.

No need whatsoever to go to May-He-Ko...there's plenty of newly-arrived (under cover of darkness) Mexicans everywhere 'ya look.

Most of 'em are nice friendly folks, but they have broken various laws and are overwhelming schools, the various social nets, hospital ERs, etc.

They also sometimes tend to regard traffic signals a bit differently than the rest of us do...red apparently not meaning stop. Had a 16 wheeler
got right thru into traffic without a pause yesterday...almost looked like a stunt job.
Scary.

Interesting times.

For the last 20 years it has not been safe to go to mexico, far to many horror stories of robberies, false arrests on trumped charges just to get your money. I say to hell with them let them starve.

My husband was a salesman in the 70's early 80's, he won a trip, from sales, to Mexico in '81. I said, "No way am I going to Mexico." I was glad we didn't go since the people we would have been with were robbed on one of the tours. We took the huge chest freezer (that we are still using) and some other stuff instead.

It's been bad for awhile, it's too bad it's getting worse...

I've never been to MX and have no intentions of going, purely on principle.

I strive to not associate with trash.

We go to Mexico every March or early April, and October, and sometimes at Christmas or New Year's. So we're supposed to go again in October, but it will be difficult with Daughter's school schedule. I'm not as concerned about it once we get there (even though we're maybe 15 minutes up the highway from Villa de Santiago) but crossing the border makes me a little uneasy. We manage to skirt Nuevo Laredo, and we see Federales everywhere (usually in hoods with lots of weapons) but...Husband used to tell me I shouldn't be scared, it's just "home" but lately even he's been a little concerned.

If we don't go, however, I will miss it, and seeing my family.
