flea market SCORE!!!

our town is small...we only have a flea market a couple of times a year. this weekend was one of them. most of the tables were the usual homemade soaps and crafts but one guy was selling stuff he had gotten at an estate sale. whoever had previously owned the stuff was obviously a well to do outdoors nut. here's a list of the things i bought (every one of them new in the packaging btw), the price i paid and the suggested retail price.

Svea 123 Gas stove - $2 - $100 retail

2x optimus nova backpacking stoves - $5 each - $140 retail each

MSR XGK-EX backpacking stove - $5 - $150

MSR Dragonfly stove - $2 - $130

MSR Mini Works EX water filter - $2 - $90

Katadyn Pocket water filter - $20 - $300

REI Ti Ware Teapot - $2 - $55

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset $2 - $75

REI Ti Ware Nonstick Titanium Pot - $2 - $55

REI Ti Ware Nonstick Titanium Cookset - $2 - $120

Carhartt Jacket - $20 - $125

believe me, while i didn't know the value of the items at the time, i realized they were WAAAY underpriced. i asked the guy selling if he was for real and he said if he sold everything for what he was asking he'd make triple what he'd paid at the estate sale. if he was happy with the prices, who am i to look a blessing from God in the mouth? :D

most of this stuff will be added to our BOB's but i'll probably sell some of the redundant stoves on EBAY or somewhere.

Man, I don't know how you guys do it. Flea markets around here never yield such treasures for so little...lots of junk usually and I think people know the value of things a little better around here but I guess you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

And why would you want to mess with the hard to work with Titianium?
How about this? You paid $8 for the REI titianium. I will offer to double your money and pay normal shipping costs.
Just trying to give you options.

I can tell you that SVEA stove is one of the best backPack stoves ever made and you can still get parts for them.

And all I got was this damned T-shirt.

Doesn't look like you'll be goin' hungry, CFI, what with all that cookware and stoves.

Bon appetite, you shopper, you.

actually, i've already starting gifting some of it to friends, but i'll take a pic of what's left for ya. :D

in reality, i had no idea what most of this sold for. i knew the prices were way low but i figured the stoves were like $40 and the cookware was $15-20. i was shocked when i looked the stuff up on the 'net and saw what it all sold for. most of the stuff i'd never buy myself and none of it fits in with my other gear except the katadyn pocket filter (that one i've always wanted and knew exactly what it was worth).

Definitely a legendary-type score...nice to see it go to someone who appreciates it.

(I'm really wondering what-else was at that Estate sale)

This is just sooooo unfair!! I never find such deals, or even anything close. :(

Congrats...I guess.

ya know, for 25 years i looked and looked and NEVER found any good deals. i used to envy those who could and always wondered how they did it. now, after all this time i have started doing it too. i think the secret is, never stop looking and, even if you don't know everything about everything, at least have enough experience to have an idea what stuff is worth.

btw, i also bid on a progressive reloading press last week, looking for one of those deals. i ended up getting a used press without all the pieces for about 10$ less than what one cost new...so you see, not every deal i come across is all that great (it's gonna cost me extra to order the missing parts...probably $50 more.) and you have to be buying stuff or those deals will pass you by.

there was ice climbing stuff...ice picks/axes, skis, spiked shoe attachments, sleeping bags (priced close to or above normal btw), tents, sleeping mats, all sorts of stuff. it looked like a mt everest expedition had sold their equipment.

You'll like the dragonfly. I bought one when they first came out and have cooked lots and lots of meals on it. I think I paid about $100 at the time.

DAMN.. heh I need to move to Elko for those kind of deals.. lol

We dont have anything like that at our local yard sales.. however I think after seeing that stash, I may have to start sneaking out Sat AM and checking them. Good deals!

The real secret to getting the good deals often at yard sales is being one of the first folks there.

Not always but most often.

Svea 123 was the stove that climbed the Matterhorn (In the 1880s.)

I had two - gave one to my BIL because if you have one - you need only one.

Rebuild kits are available but rarely needed. They consist of a new screw fill plug/relief valve, and a piece of cotton thread which acts as a wick. The thread gets a white build up and the fill plug/relief valves can "stick" or "leak" both of which can be problematical in a firey sort of way.

I would hold on to one of those MSR XGK models as well. They burn pretty much anything liquid and flammable, and are as reliable as all get out. I've got a XGK from the '80s, still roars like a jet's afterburner when it's cooking, and I've used everything from diesel to WG to kerosene in it. Very versatile. Also, ditto on what everyone said about the Svea. A true classic for a reason. And that titanium cookware will lighten the BOB quite a bit.

But man, NICE scores! Congrats!

I have more than a couple peices of the gear you bought, for instance the Snow Peak Titanium cookware set.

You got a steal, this is all high quality stuff.

Kudos, CfI! Good on ya'.

:D

I got some good deals at the Slidell gun show on Sunday, but nothing nearly as stellar as what you scored.
