ALERT Two Russian Subs Patrolling Eastern Seaboard (Akula Class)

Echo 5

Well...shit
WASHINGTON — A pair of nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines has been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States over recent days, a rare mission that has raised concerns inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies about a more assertive stance by the Russian military.

The episode has echoes of the cold war era, when the United States and the Soviet Union regularly parked submarines off each other’s coasts to steal military secrets, track the movements of their underwater fleets — and be poised for war.

But the collapse of the Soviet Union all but eliminated the ability of the Russian Navy to operate far from home ports, making the current submarine patrols thousands of miles from Russia even more surprising for military officials and defense policy experts.

“I don’t think they’ve put two first-line nuclear subs off the U.S. coast in about 15 years,” said Norman Polmar, a naval historian and expert on submarine warfare.

So these are attack boats vs Boomers? Are they hanging out near our Boomer bases? Sounds like an excellent training op for our ASW crews.

Could these subs be 'serviced' in Cuba or Venezuela?

We underestimate the ability of the Russian and Chinese military.

All you need is a couple subs to get their launches off.

Give me a break. Just the other day we got reports of UFO sightings by Russian subs off of Bermuda, which is very close to the US coast.

Even without the Bermuda info, I don't believe for a second they haven't been there all along, so what's interesting to me about this article is that the NEW YORK TIMES (ie: spokespeople for the WH) - are now reporting about it. They want the masses to know.

There is a concern that they can also launch nuclear cruise missiles. We don't want to find out for sure.

It was crossing my mind as I typed that that they could of modified their subs for just such a purpose. While the Typhoon class are the boomers, the later version Akula's increased in size quite a bit, presumably under the purpose of noise suppression. :hmm:

I would hope the intel would be up on that, but I'd say the U.S.'s foreign intel gathering capabilities are now mediocre at best as they've ramped up domestic intel.

Well, I don't think it's any co-incidence that these are showing up about the time things are flaring up again over in Georgia/Ossetia with the Russians.

...All Akulas are armed with four 533 mm torpedo tubes which can use Type 53 torpedoes or the SS-N-15 Starfish missile, and four 650 mm torpedo tubes which can use Type 65 torpedoes or the SS-N-16 Stallion missile. These torpedo tubes are arranged in two rows of four tubes each. Improved Akulas and Akula IIs have an additional six 533 mm torpedo tubes mounted externally, however it is unclear whether these are fully functional external tubes, or if they are only capable of launching Mines and decoys. The external tubes are mounted outside the pressure hull in one row, above the 'Normal' Torpedo tubes, and can only be reloaded in port or with the assistance of a submarine tender. The 650 mm tubes can be fitted with liners to use the 533 mm weaponry. The submarine is also able to use its torpedo tubes to deploy mines...

The RPK-2 Viyuga (Russian: РПК-2 Вьюга; "Viyuga" is "blizzard" in English) cruise missile is a complex Russian submarine launched missile. Its NATO reporting name is SS-N-15 Starfish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS-N-15

Analogous to the now retired Subroc missile carried by US Navy submarines, it is designed to be fired from a 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tube. It is boosted by a choice of mechanisms depending on model before clearing the water, firing a solid fuel rocket and delivering its payload up to 45 km (28 mi) away. The payload ranges from a simple depth charge to a 200 kt nuclear warhead.

The RPK-2 uses 82R torpedo or 90R nuclear depth charge in 533 mm version and 83R torpedo carrying or 86R nuclear depth charge in 650 mm version.

Both submarine- and surface-launched versions exist. The surface-launched versions are used by the Slava, Kirov, Neustrashimyy and Udaloy classes, while the submarine-launched versions are used by the Akula, Oscar, Typhoon, Kilo, and Borei classes.

SS-N-16
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The SS-N-16 Stallion was a Soviet 650 mm anti-ship missile that was deployed between 1979 and 1981. The name is a combination of the American designation of SS-N-16 and the NATO term of Stallion for Soviet RU-100s.

It refers to either

1. RPK-6 Vodopad (Russian: РПК-6 Водопад, "waterfall") - Surface ship version
or
2. RPK-7 Vorobei (Russian: РПК-7 Воробей, "sparrow") - Submarine version

The 53.3 cm version carried either the 82R torpedo or the 90R nuclear depth charge. The 65 cm version carried the 83R torpedo or 86R nuclear depth charge.

Serving dual roles, the missile could be outfitted as either an RU-100 Veder, a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead for use against surface ships, or alternatively an RU-100 Vodopad (Russian: Водопад, waterfall), a Type-40 torpedo for use against submarines.

Its increased range of up to 120 kilometres offered an impressive boost over its predecessor the SS-N-15 Starfish, which could only reach half the distance; although it meant refitting all the old 533 mm torpedo tubes to carry this new 650 mm torpedo.

3M-54 Klub

The Russian 3M-54 Klub is a multi-role missile system developed by the Novator Design Bureau(OKB-8). Its NATO reporting name is SS-N-27. Both submarine and surface ship launched versions exist. The system is designed to accept various warheads, allowing its use against surface and subsurface naval combatants along with static land targets. In one variant, the 3M-54E (Sizzler), the final stage makes a supersonic 'sprint' to its target, reducing the time the target's defense systems have to react. The 3M-54E1 subsonic missile is roughly comparable to both the American Tomahawk cruise missile and the ASROC missile but is smaller and has a shorter range....

....Variants

There are two major launching vehicles: the Klub-S, designed for launch from submarines, and the Klub-N, designed for launch from surface ships. These two launchers can be equipped by the following warhead and guidance combinations:

3M-54E - Anti-shipping variant, Basic length 8.22 m, with a 200 kg warhead. Range is 220 km. Sea-skimmer with supersonic terminal speed and flight altitude of 15 feet (4.6 m) at final stage[1]. Has ability to successfully attack carrier groups.

3M-54E1 - Anti-shipping variant, Basic length 6.2 m, with a 400 kg warhead. Range is 300 km. Sea-skimmer with subsonic terminal speed. Russian equivalent of the Harpoon[citation needed].

3M-14E - Inertial guidance land attack variant. Basic length 6.2 m, with a 400 kg warhead. Range is 275 km. Subsonic terminal speed.

91RE1 - Ballistically launched anti-submarine variant, with an anti-submarine torpedo. Basic length 8.0 m, with a range of 50 km. Supersonic speed. The torpedo has a warhead weight of 76 kg. For submarine use only. This, along with the 91RE2, are similar to the American ASROC missile/torpedo system.

91RE2 - Ballistically launched anti-submarine variant, with an anti-submarine torpedo. Basic length 6.5 m, with a range of 40 km Supersonic speed. The torpedo has a warhead weight of 76 kg. For surface ship use only. The lightest of all variants, with a launch weight of 1300 kg.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Novator RK-55 Granat (Russian: РК-55 Гранат 'Garnet'; NATO:SSC-X-4 'Slingshot'; GRAU:3K10) was a Soviet land-based cruise missile with a nuclear warhead. It was about to enter service in 1987 when such weapons were banned under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. A version launched from submarine torpedo tubes, the S-10 Granat (SS-N-21 'Sampson';GRAU:3M10), has apparently been converted to carry conventional warheads and continues in service to this day.

The RK-55 is very similar to the air-launched Kh-55 (AS-15 'Kent') but the Kh-55 has a drop-down turbofan engine[3] and was designed by MKB Raduga. Both have formed the basis of post-Cold-War missiles, in particular the 3M-54 Klub (SS-N-27 'Sizzler') which has a supersonic approach phase.[4]....

....The S-10 is launched through 533 mm torpedo tubes....* S-10 or RK-55 (SS-N-21 'Sampson') - submarine-launched version...

...Conventional unitary High Explosive (HE) warhead and submunition warhead versions of the RK-55 have probably been developed, to justify the continuing service of the submarines that carry them.[4]...

Russia favors attack subs, tactical nukes

Published: March. 23, 2009 at 2:15 PM

MOSCOW, March 23 (UPI) -- Russia is likely to place more emphasis on lighter attack submarines armed with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles in the future, military officials say. With advances in the range and sophistication of tactical nuclear arms, Russian military leaders say low-yield nuclear warheads attached to cruise missiles fired from attack submarines make more sense than loading powerful bombs onto bigger strategic submarines, RIA Novosti reported.

"Probably, tactical nuclear weapons (on submarines) will play a key role in the future," Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev, deputy head of the Russian navy general staff, told the news service. "Their range and precision are gradually increasing."

Burtsev added: "There is no longer any need to equip missiles with powerful nuclear warheads. We can install low-yield warheads on existing cruise missiles."

An example of the kind of equipment to be favored in the future is the new Severodvinsk nuclear-powered attack submarine, to be commissioned in 2010-11, Burtsev said. It reportedly has the ability to launch long-range cruise missiles tipped with nuclear warheads, and can also battle hostile submarines and surface warships.

Russia to strengthen strategic nuclear subs

www.chinaview.cn
2009-03-23 23:31:50

MOSCOW, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Russia will strengthen its fleet of strategic nuclear submarines, a senior Navy official said Monday.

Russia will maintain and upgrade its fleet of strategic submarines, carrying ballistic missiles, as a naval component of the nuclear triad, the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev, deputy head of the Navy General Staff, as saying.

The nuclear triad refers to the Strategic Rocket Forces, strategic aviation and nuclear submarine fleet.

"There is no longer any need to equip missiles with powerful nuclear warheads. We can install low-yield warheads on existing cruise missiles," said Burtsev.

He also said that Russia's new Severodvinsk nuclear-powered attack submarine will be commissioned with the Navy in 2010-2011.

The new submarine is able to launch long-range cruise missiles with nuclear warheads, and engage hostile submarines and surface warships.

Russia will also build at least six Borey-class strategic submarines to serve in the Northern and the Pacific fleets, Burtsev added.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D99SCM7O0&show_article=1

(AP) - Defense officials say two nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines have been patrolling in international waters off the East Coast for several days.

The officials tell The Associated Press that while they haven't seen such unusual activity since the Cold War, the military is not overly concerned. They say the Russians have a right to conduct naval exercises and are operating according to international law.

U.S. Northern Command would not comment on any details of the Russian submarines movement. But in a prepared statement, Northern Command spokesman Michael Kucharek acknowledged the patrols and said that the U.S. has been monitoring the two submarines.

Two senior defense officials provided details on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence.

The article make it sound like some remote incident in ancient history :-)

Couple of days ago i saw a doc about a Russian typhoon sub,
a French tv-crew was on board from the beginning.
They had barely left the harbor before the was a extremely well equip "Fishing vessel" on it,
and further out real u.s. surface vessel was greeting them.

So nothing new here, the new crews have to train somewhere :-)
and what is more fun that sailing around in "enemy" waters while

While on the subject of subs.

The Message For America

http://www.handofhelp.com/vision_1.php

September, 1984

Late one night, I could not sleep, The children were sleeping on the luggage. My wife and daughter were crying, I went outside and walked around. I didn't want them to see me cry. I walked around the building, crying and saying, "God! Why did you punish me? Why did you bring me into this country? I can't understand anybody. If I try to ask anybody anything, all I hear is, "I don't know."

I stopped in front of the apartment and sat on a large rock. Suddenly a bright light came toward me. I jumped to my feet because it looked as if a car was coming directly at me, attempting to run me down! I thought the Romanian Secret Police had tracked me to America, and now they were trying to kill me. But it wasn't a car at all. As the light approached, it surrounded me. From the light I heard the same voice that I had heard so many times in prison.

He said "Dumitru, why are you so despaired?" I said, "Why did you punish me? Why did you bring me to this country? I have nowhere to lay my head down. I can't understand anybody." He said, "Dumitru, didn't I tell you I am here with you, also? I brought you to this country because this country will burn." I said, 'then why did you bring me here to burn? Why didn't you let me die in my own country? You should have let me die in jail in Romania! He said, "Dumitru, have patience so I can tell you. Get on this." I got on something next to him. I don't know what it was. I also know that I was not asleep. It was not a dream. It was not a vision. I was awake just as I am now.

He showed me all of California and said, "This is Sodom and Gomorrah! All of this, in one day it will burn! It's sin has reached the Holy One." Then he took me to Las Vegas. "This is Sodom and Gomorrah. In one day it will burn." Then he showed me the state of New York. "Do you know what this is?" he asked. I said, "No." He said "This is New York. This is Sodom and Gomorrah! In one day it will burn." Then he showed me all of Florida, "This is Florida." he said. "This is Sodom and Gomorrah! In one day it will burn."

Then he took me back home to the rock where we had begun. "IN ONE DAY IT WILL BURN! All of this I have shown you" - I said, "How will it burn?" He said, "Remember what I am telling you, because you will go on television, on the radio and in churches. You must yell with a loud voice. Do not be afraid, because I will be with you." I said, "How will I be able to go? Who knows me here in America? I don't know anybody here." He said, "Don't worry yourself. I will go before you. I will do a lot of healing in the American churches and I will open the doors for you. But do not say anything else besides what I tell you. This country will burn!"

I said, "What will you do with the church?" He said, "I want to save the church, but the churches have forsaken me." I said, "How did they forsake you?" He said, "The people praise themselves. The honor that the people are supposed to give Jesus Christ, they take upon themselves. In the churches there are divorces. There is adultery in the churches. There are homosexuals in the churches. There is abortion in the churches and all other sins that are possible.

Because of all the sin, I have left some of the churches. You must yell in a loud voice that they must put an end to their sinning. They must turn toward the Lord. The Lord never gets tired of forgiving. They must draw close to the Lord, and live a clean life. If they have sinned until now, they must put an end to it, and start a new life as the Bible tells them to live."

I said, "How will America burn?" America is the most powerful country in this world. Why did you bring us here to burn? Why didn't you at least let us die where ALL the Dudumans have died?"

He said, "Remember this, Dumitru. The Russian spies have discovered where the nuclear warehouses are in America. When the Americans will think that it is peace and safety - from the middle of the country, some of the people will start fighting against the government. The government will be busy with internal problems. Then from the ocean, from Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico,,.." (He told me two other countries, but I didn't remember what they were.) "...they will bomb the nuclear warehouses. When they explode, America will burn!"

"What will you do with the Church of the Lord? How will you save the ones that will turn toward you?" I asked. He said, "Tell them this: how I saved the three young ones from the furnace of fire, and how I saved Daniel in the lions den, is the same way I will save them."

The angel of the Lord also told me, "I have blessed this country because of the Jewish people who are in this country. I have seven million Jews in this country, but they do not want to recognize the Lord. They didn't want to thank God for the blessing they received in this country. Israel doesn't want to recognize Jesus Christ. They put their faith in the Jewish people in America. But, when America burns, the Lord will raise China, Japan, and other nations to go against the Russians. They will beat the Russians and push them all the way to the gates of Paris.

Over there they will make a treaty, and appoint the Russians as their leaders. They will then unite against Israel. When Israel realizes she does not have the strength of America behind her, she will be frightened. That's when she will turn to the Messiah for deliverance. That's when the Messiah will come. Then, the church will meet Jesus in the air, and he will bring them back with Him to the Mount of Olives. At that time, the battle of Armageddon will be fought."

When I heard all of this I said, "if you are truly the angel of the Lord, and everything you have told me is true, then all you have said must be written in the Bible." He said, "Tell everyone to read from Jeremiah 51:8-15, Revelation chapter 18, and Zechariah chapter 14, where Christ fights against those who possess the earth. After His victory," the angel said, "there will be one flock and one Shepherd. There will be no need for light. The Lamb of God will be the Light. There will be no sickness, no tears, and no deaths. There will only be eternal joy and God will be the ruler. There will be only one language. Only one song. And no need for a translator! ... And, Dumitru," he continued, "a word of warning. If you keep anything from the American people that you are told, I will punish you severely." "How will I know that this is for real -that it will really happen?" I asked. "As a sign that I have spoken to you, tomorrow before you wake, I will send someone to bring you a bed, and at noon I will send you a car and a bucket of honey. After which I will send someone to pay your rent." (See chapter 10, "THROUGH THE FIRE WITHOUT BURNING.") Then the angel left.

You'll notice in my reply that I underlined the word KNOW. There is a difference I think between posting articles from men and interviews with former spys with KNOWING beyond a shadow of a doubt what Russia's or anyone else is going to do.

We can post interviews and spurious prophesy's and predictions until the cows come home. Disinformation and self appointed experts are as thick as cream on top of raw milk in the days we are living in. Even if Russia or anyone else has an intention it isn't going to happen unless God says so.

And none of us have Gods ear that we KNOW exactly what, when and how God is going to fulfill his will and his plans in these times. We think we know, we have opinions that we know, we have end time prophesy and our eschatology all neatly tied up with a bow but only God knows exactly how he is going to accomplish his will.

It's been my experience at least in the last several years wading through all the expert opinion and in trudging through one 'prophesy' and 'prediction' after another that once again God gets the last laugh. I don't know exactly how it's all going to come to pass or when and I don't think any of you do either. It is enough to be awake, alert and watchful as our Lord instructed us.

This story has legs....but the legs are old at least a year. Something is a miss here. A show that is no longer broadcasting, (at this time) talked extensively about russian subs off the east coast. This went on for at least a year if not longer.
If we believed that information was correct then why only now is it hitting the mainstream media. It is obvious one or two things.....first its either a media false flag that is a wag the dog scenario.....I also think its possible that it could the WH is using this to rally the troops...but I think that most people feel that we have no beef against Russia....Its hard to hate Russia and the people in this day of communication. Gov't is another thing but we are pretty aware that fighting gov't is impossible and a nonwinnable situation....

Are you sure about that?
I just posted a couple of things. There's just too much going on for the moment for me to cover. "Where have all the news hunters gone...long time passing..."

Thank you. While I don't pretend to have the certainty of some posters on some things, I am very much convinced that Iran and/or NK military activity is tied intimately with Russia rolling back into Georgia. So I asked the question...

Thank you. While I don't pretend to have the certainty of some posters on some things, I am very much convinced that Iran and/or NK military activity is tied intimately with Russia rolling back into Georgia. So I asked the question...

I hear you Searcher. Both the Bear and the Dragon know their chess and are using Iran and the PDRK as bishops/rooks as needed. These two Akulas are pawns being sent out as a reminder. The Russian boomers don't have to leave harbor in some cases or in others cross the GIUK Gap to cover CONUS.

That being said, the information was made public for a reason as well. The who is the important part. The USN's confirmation and that they are being monitored has its own message. The news from a week or so ago about the number of SSNs at sea put together with this is however a dot.

As one coworker said today, while we know Biden has athlete's tongue, the Kremlin looks at the statements in the way that such statements would come from them, the guy in the #1 chair had the guy in the #2 spot make the statements.

There are a lot of pieces being moved about at the moment on multiple planes. I'm just wondering how much of an understanding of regular chess the Obama Admin has, never mind the 3D variety.

Russian Subs Patrolling Off East Coast of U.S.

By MARK MAZZETTI and THOM SHANKER

Published: August 4, 2009

WASHINGTON — A pair of nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines has been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States in recent days, a rare mission that has raised concerns inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies about a more assertive stance by the Russian military.
The episode has echoes of the cold war era, when the United States and the Soviet Union regularly parked submarines off each other’s coasts to steal military secrets, track the movements of their underwater fleets — and be poised for war.
But the collapse of the Soviet Union all but eliminated the ability of the Russian Navy to operate far from home ports, making the current submarine patrols thousands of miles from Russia more surprising for military officials and defense policy experts.

“I don’t think they’ve put two first-line nuclear subs off the U.S. coast in about 15 years,” said Norman Polmar, a naval historian and submarine warfare expert.
The submarines are of the Akula class, a counterpart to the Los Angeles class attack subs of the United States Navy, and not one of the larger submarines that can launch intercontinental nuclear missiles.
According to Defense Department officials, one of the Russian submarines remained in international waters on Tuesday about 200 miles off the coast of the United States. The location of the second remained unclear. One senior official said the second submarine traveled south in recent days toward Cuba, while another senior official with access to reports on the surveillance mission said it had sailed away in a northerly direction.
The Pentagon and intelligence officials spoke anonymously to describe the effort to track the Russian submarines, which has not been publicly announced.
President Obama spoke by telephone with President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia on Tuesday, but it was not clear whether the subject of the submarines came up, although another source of friction between the two countries did. Mr. Medvedev called Mr. Obama to wish him a happy birthday and the White House said the president used the opportunity to urge Russia to work through diplomatic channels to resolve rising tensions with Georgia.
The submarine patrols come as Moscow tries to shake off the embarrassment of the latest failed test of the Bulava missile, a long-range weapon that was test fired from a submarine in the Arctic on July 15. The failed missile test was the sixth since 2005, and some experts see Russia’s assertiveness elsewhere as a gambit by the military to prove its continued relevance.

“It’s the military trying to demonstrate that they are still a player in Russian political and economic matters,” Mr. Polmar said.
One of the submarines is the newer Akula II, officials said, which is quieter than the older variant and the most advanced in the Russian fleet. The Akula is capable of carrying torpedoes for attacking other submarines and surface vessels as well as missiles for striking targets on land and at sea.
Defense Department officials declined to speculate on which weapons might be aboard the two submarines.
While the submarines have not taken any provocative action beyond their presence outside territorial waters of the United States, officials expressed wariness over the Kremlin’s motivation for ordering such an unusual mission.
“Anytime the Russian Navy does something so out of the ordinary it is cause for worry,” said a senior Defense Department official who has been monitoring reports on the submarines’ activities.
The official said the Navy was able to track the submarines as they made their way through international waters off the American coastline. This can be done from aircraft, ships, underwater sensors or other submarines.
“We’ve known where they were, and we’re not concerned about our ability to track the subs,” the official added. “We’re concerned just because they are there.”

Once among the world’s most powerful forces, the Russian Navy now has very few ships regularly deployed on the open seas. Moscow has contributed warships to the international armada searching for Somali pirates. In addition, a flotilla of Russian warships participated in exercises with Venezuela last year.

Masters of deceit

Introduction

http://www.tldm.org/news2/masters_of_deceit.htm

The West has been the target of a strategic deception unprecedented in the history of the world. The “death of communism” has been acted out on a global stage, with multitudes of gullible and wishful thinkers following the piper’s tune.
Russian defectors such as Anatoliy Golitsyn and Colonel Stanislav Lunev have filled in many of the gaps, enlightening anyone who will listen that Russia has not converted but is poised to deliver a crushing military strike against the United States.
Anatoliy Golitsyn's 1984 book, New Lies for Old, predicted with 94% accuracy all the recent changes in the communist bloc, including the economic and political reforms, the rise of Solidarity, the removal of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Golitsyn’s latest book, The Perestroika Deception, reinforces his contention in New Lies for Old that all the changes were meticulously planned years in advance. On December 18, 1991, a week before the Soviet Union "collapsed" into the Commonwealth of Independent States, Our Lady of the Roses warned the world:

The gullible West
French author Jean-François Revel minces no words in labeling the West as ”gullible” concerning its dealings with Russia. In his book, How Democracies Perish, Revel states that he does not intend to recite the annals of Western gullibility, but nevertheless voices amazement at communist propaganda’s repeated success in duping the democracies throughout the world. He reminds his readers that in 341 B.C., Demosthenes tried to open the Athenians’ eyes to the “peace offensives” of Philip of Macedon: “Our adversary, with arms in hand and supported by a strong force, covers himself with the word ‘peace’ while committing acts of war.” Peace, peace, where there is no peace.
Russia and China have outlined plans for a future war with America (Read more...), and Revel points out that such declarations are characteristic of communism:

Totalitarians are obliging: they declare and put in writing in advance everything they plan to do. The democracies normally make the same mistake they made with Hitler in refusing to take these detailed programs seriously because they seem so horrendous. [ii]

But how could we Westerners have been so willfully blind to Soviet expansionism? Because all our notions about Soviet communism rest on the same [false] supposition: that everything will straighten itself out. [iii]

A dangerous game of denial
Mere ignorance does not account for such a widespread disbelief in the real intentions of Russia; we must also include willful denial of the facts. Our Lady of the Roses has told us:

The denial factor helps to explain our leaders’ (both political and religious) perplexing failure to acknowledge the Russian threat, even in the light of overwhelming evidence. It is unfortunate that certain leaders, “Sensing that the totalitarian threat cannot be dispelled by compromise… prefer to deny the danger exists. They are even enraged by those who dare to see and name it.” [iv]
The ostrich approach, the head-in-the-sand reaction, is sadly how some deal with the situation. As Bruno Bettelheim has observed, people employ “various distancing devices, false analogies, and forms of outright denial” in order “not to have to come to grips with a grim reality.” [v] Bettelheim explains:

When the event is potentially destructive, [denial] is the most pernicious psychological defense, because it does not permit taking appropriate action which might safeguard against the real dangers. Denial therefore leaves the individual most vulnerable to the very perils against which he tried to defend himself…. [vi]

Feigning weakness
Many people, through the neglect of prayer and the sacraments, do not have the grace of discernment and blindly accept what they are told by the mass media. As a result, the multitudes have been easily deceived:

For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearances as though they were realities… and are often more influenced by the things that seem, than by those that are. – Machiavelli

According to current propaganda, Russia has become so weak, its economy so precarious, that Russia is no longer considered a threat. Again, Revel chides the West for its naïve assessments: “… it is a mistake to ascribe democratic logic to a totalitarian system. The democracies trim their military spending when the economy goes sour; the communist countries do not.” [vii]
Meanwhile, as the West soaks up Russian propaganda, communism advances worldwide, with military threats such as China, North Korea, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, etc., growing stronger day by day. But, as usual, the West does nothing, and says nothing:

Every time they grab a new advantage, martyr another people, the Soviets know that they can count first on the inaction of the ‘great powers’ in the West and then on their silence. [viii]

Purpose of the deception
There are several goals to be attained by this strategic Russian deception: (1) slow American military growth; (2) increase Russian military strength as America lowers its guard; (3) obtain massive economic aid from the West; and (4) strike a surprise blow when America least expects it.

(1) Slow American military growth:
In 1989, Senator Malcolm Wallop (R-WY) described the ominous and growing military gap between America and the Soviet Union. Senator Wallop quoted from a report by the highly respected Committee on the Present Danger (CPD) which pointed out that the US was worse off entering the 1990s than it was in the 1980s. The US Department of Defense report, Soviet Military Power 1988, highlighted the following Soviet to US weapons procurement ratios between 1978 and '87: submarines - 2 to 1; tanks - 3 to 1; other armored vehicles - 4-1/2 to 1; bombers - 4 to 1; ICBMs/SLBMs - 4-1/2 to 1; SAMS - 6-1/2 to 1; artillery, mortars, multiple rocket launchers - 8-1/2 to 1.
Defectors such as Golitsyn and Lunev have confirmed that this strategic deception intends to alter the balance of power in Russia’s favor:

We have to look at Russia with an eye to previous defector warnings about Kremlin strategy. Americans need to reconsider the importance of KGB defector Anatoliy Golitsyn, who predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union several years before it happened. Golitsyn's 1984 book, "New Lies for Old," alleged that the coming Soviet collapse would be orchestrated by the KGB in order to disarm the West. General Jan Sejna, a high ranking Czech defector, made a similar claim in his 1982 book, "We Will Bury You." In 1967 Sejna learned of a plan to fake the collapse of the Warsaw Pact. This plan hoped to advance the arms control process, encourage Western disarmament, and alter the balance of power in Russia's favor. Surprise Nuclear Attack, Part 2, J.R. Nyquist (WorldNetDaily)

(2) increase Russian military strength:
Russia has continued its military buildup at an alarming pace. It has sealed a Russia-China military alliance (recall from Our Lady of the Roses message, “Russia will also utilize the manpower of China”), including major arms sales agreements:

Russia is now negotiating a combined arms sales package with China valued at up to $15 billion over the next five years—the largest such deal in Russia's history, according to the authoritative British publication Jane's Intelligence Review. The question is why. (U.S. Concern: Moscow-Beijing Arms Deals, November 30, 2000)

Russia has also armed China with warships capable of vaporizing an entire American aircraft carrier.
An underground Russian military complex called Yamantau, the size of Washington, D.C., has been discovered through U.S. satellite intelligence:

Of immediate concern is the vast underground site built into the Ural Mountains known as Yamantau… Yamantau is believed to conceal one of Russia’s darkest nuclear secrets… According to U.S. intelligence sources, the Russian government has pumped more than $4.5 billion into building a sprawling underground complex at Yamantau—impervious to direct nuclear assault—that spans an area as large as Washington, D.C., inside the Beltway, or some 400 square miles… How many times do we need to witness Russian cheating on missile pacts before abandoning a misguided policy? What will it take to wake up U.S. leaders to such international duplicity—a nuclear attack? What do you suppose that nuclear war-fighting bunker in Yamantau is for—an underground housing development?” (Can Moscow Be Trusted? Inside Russia's Magic Mountain - Part II (WorldNetDaily)

Recent intelligence reports confirm that thousands of Russian fighter-bombers are currently under construction.
The summer of 2000 Russia held massive war games meant to "make NATO strategists think twice about the dangerous consequences" of moving eastward. Moscow characterized the exercises, called "Combat Unity 2000," unprecedented in their magnitude, taking place "for the first time ever ... on such a scale."
Russia has recently developed a road-mobile ICBM, the most advanced ICBM in the world, called the Topol-M missile:

In a calculated warning for the United States to butt out of its internal affairs, Russia launched with fanfare its newest strategic nuclear weapon Tuesday. It soared eastward across 3,400 miles and seven time zones, landing as programmed in a target range on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula just short of Alaska. But its true impact was directed westward toward the American heartland, now shown to be within easy range of the versatile Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile. This awesome display of force came only four days after President Boris Yeltsin—outraged at President Clinton's criticism of his war to suppress the breakaway Caucasian republic of Chechnya—placed Russia's nuclear missiles on full war footing. …The launch of the Topol-M, with its reputed ultimate range of more than 6,000 miles, is the latest in a series of recent alarming military moves in Russia. (Russia Launches New Missile as Warning, NewsMax.com, Dec. 15, 1999)

As Newsmax has observed, “Clearly the Bear is awake—and thanks to Vladimir Putin, it’s baring its teeth and sharpening its claws.” (The Bear rises, December 18, 2000) All this from a country that is helpless and no longer a threat? Please.

(3) obtain massive economic aid from the West:

The Clinton administration's failed policies toward Russia have created a growing anti-American alliance between Moscow and Beijing based on arms sales and joint efforts to curb U.S. power and influence, according to a congressional report.
"To challenge America's dominance, Russia today cultivates its strategic partnership with the People's Republic of China—a partnership explicitly targeting American policies and interests around the globe and founded on increasing both the PRC's and Russia's military capabilities against the United States," the report said....
"It is not only deeply ironic but tragic that this state of affairs follows $112.2 billion in Western assistance to Russia," the report said. "After eight years of a Clinton administration policy that has yet to place highest priority on the basic steps needed to create a free enterprise economy in Russia, the U.S.-Russia relationship is in ruins, characterized by deep and growing hostility and divergent perceptions of international realities and intentions." ("House Report warns of anti-U.S. alliance: panel says Russia, China teaming up," Washington Times, September 25, 2000)

(4) strike a surprise blow when America least expects it:
J.R. Nyquist, an expert on the Russian military, gives a list of ten indicators of Russian military preparations for nuclear war. According to Nyquist, every indicator in the list has now been reported and verified by the Russian or Western press. (Surprise Nuclear Attack, Part 2, J.R. Nyquist (WorldNetDaily). Furthermore, the Russian defector Colonel Stanislav Lunev has warned Congress that a surprise nuclear attack by Russia is a real possibility (Ex-spy Fears Sneak Russian Attack, NewsMax.com, January 25, 2000).

.....................................................................................

These nuclear missiles are launched from [5] Soviet submarines currently a few miles off of the US east and west coasts, from [6] MIG fighter bombers launched against the southeastern United States from Cuba, and across the polar ice cap. America, of course, because of 25 years of disarmament treaties, has no nuclear defense whatsoever. A feeble retaliation from a handful of US submarines does minimal damage to a well-defended Soviet Union.

Within hours of the attack, the Soviets launch an airborne and armored [7] invasion into an undefended and disarmed United States [8] through Alaska and Mexico. [9] This airborne/armored invasion by Russians, Cubans, Nicaraguans, and other East bloc troops quickly [10] cuts North America in half and the political survival of America becomes problematic.

Is the Red Dawn Scenario plausible? In this writer's opinion, and that of a number of defense and intelligence analysts he knows, it is! The Soviet strategy for the conquest of America has long been internal demoralization, plus disarmament, plus external encirclement, will lead to nuclear blackmail and eventual surrender or conquest. Perhaps [the President], with a nuclear gun to his head, will simply surrender the present partnership will reach a new level of accommodation. Or perhaps the Soviets will opt for Red Dawn. The point is the elements for the launching of a Red Dawn Scenario are now moving into place.

These elements include: 1) vastly superior Soviet military strength [11] vs. the US; 2) a neutral Europe and the [12] termination of the NATO military alliance (which secures Russia's western flank); 3) revolutionary Communist governments in Cuba, Nicaragua, and eventually, throughout Central America and Mexico; 4) larger standing armies in Cuba and Nicaragua than America now possesses; 5) A very porous, undefendable border with Mexico stretching 2,100 miles from Brownsville to Tijuana; 6) millions of Latin refugees in the southwestern US, with millions more coming in each year thousands of these are KGB, DGI, or other east bloc agents, spetsnaz, etc.; 7) a total absence of US air defenses against submarine launched missiles (i.e., from Soviet subs on the US east and west coasts, or the Gulf of Mexico), from Cuban or Central American based aircraft, or from Russia across the polar ice cap; 8) huge stores of pre-positioned conventional weapons in Cuba, Nicaragua, and, eventually, throughout Central America and Mexico; 9) a sparsely populated and largely undefended Alaska, virtually adjacent to the Soviet Union, and already (at this writing), being [13] infiltrated by Soviet agents and Spetsnaz.
