< Yes, I do look like that.
Looking at that google map of the infections is very surreal for someone who's ever played the online game, Pandemic 2.

http://www.crazymonkeygames.com/Pandemic-2.html

I fired it up again last night. My starting country, which is randomly selected by the game, was Mexico.

My virus exterminated humankind in nine weeks.

BTW, if anyone sees a gag involving Madagascar locking down everything when someone in Brazil coughs in public, etc., it's a reference to this game. :D

Specifics on Canadian cases

Canada is up to 6 cases. 4 in Nova Scotia and 2 in British Columbia.

From: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=awMeiF_SLkGs&refer=home

Canadian Governments Confirm Six Cases of Swine Flu; No Deaths

"By Joe Schneider

April 26 (Bloomberg) -- Six people in Canada contracted swine flu, which has been linked to a virus that spread in Mexico and has pandemic potential, governments in the provinces of Nova Scotia and British Columbia said.

Four people in Windsor, Nova Scotia, experienced mild symptoms of the flu and are recovering, Robert Strang, chief public health officer for the province, said in a statement.

“There is no reason for the Windsor community or Nova Scotians to be overly concerned,” Strang said. “No one, at this point, has been hospitalized.”

The outbreaks of the flu, linked to 81 deaths in Mexico, warrant an urgent assessment of its potential to spark the first influenza pandemic in 41 years, the World Health Organization said yesterday. The Geneva-based United Nations agency held an emergency meeting and decided that more evidence is needed to determine whether the level of pandemic alert should be increased.

Two people in British Columbia contracted the disease, Andrew McDermitt, spokesman for Public Health Agency of Canada, said in a telephone interview. Neither had serious symptoms, he said. "

I haven't been able to beat the game yet.
When I read that the Swine Flu had spread to New Zealand, I was wondering when it would hit Greenland and Madagascar. Lol

I almost laughed during today's White House news conference when they were trying to make like they have the whole thing under control - HAH! With an incubation period of 24 to 48 hours and over 700 international flights out of Mexico City a week - and then figure the connecting flights of everyone on each of those flights who might be exposed . . . the exposure rate is mind boggleing. For instance - the kids from New Zeeland (with positive tests for H1N1) flew out of Mexico with a connecting flight in LAX. By the time they landed in NZ, some of the kids were symptomatic; which means they were contagious ON THE FLIGHTS.

When it comes to watching the numbers of cases, remember they are using epidmiology modeling. Only those cases which have had the lab tests confirmed positive for H1N1/A/Swine will be 'counted' as a confirmed case. However, the testing model is a "Herd Test". When a specific populace exhibits the same symptoms within a given time period, a sampling is done of those affected. If a significant percentage of tests come back positive, the 'herd' or in other words, the population in question is presumed positive also and treated as if they had tested positive. For instance - the kids at the school in NYC - 100 sick kids, 10 tests done, 8 positives (there is a percentage of false negatives on the flu tests). All of that group are considered as having H1N1 by the epidemiologists.

What you want to watch is how wide spread this mess is. Watch the clusters of outbreaks where there is at least one confirmed case. This is easily spread Human to Human (often written as H-H or H2H) so with one confirmed case - it is assumed exposure has been experienced by the group. Then with the rapid onset of this flu, and people are contagious prior to exhibiting symptoms, you will have the next generation of the disease alread spread before anyone is sick.

Texas Dept of Health is not messing around - they have ordered every school in the school district where the confirmed cases attent CLOSED for at least one week. And they requested that ALL meeting and large gatherings be cancelled. Many of the Churches in that are did not have services today. Plus TDH has requested that anyone who lives in that county not leave the county.

Hey, I guess that Public Health Class I took in Nursing School did each me something useful. <G>

You may add the (Mexican) state of Nuevo Leon to the list.

http://www.milenio.com/node/205087

The article is entitled, "She Vacationed in Mexico City, Came Home to Die in the IMSS Clinic." DF = Distrito Federal, which is Mexico City. IMSS is the government-run health care system that just about everyone buys into. It says she went to Clinic #31, but as she worsened, they transferred her to Clinic #6. I have no idea how large those are, but I'm going to guess that #31 is a smaller, neighborhood clinic, and #6 is a larger one, maybe even a hospital.

The article says she visited for Holy Week. She lived in the suburb of Escobedo, which is on the northern end of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon. She died Saturday afternoon. It doesn't give a name, but she was 36. It says she arrived back from the DF with symptoms.

*sigh* That's my husband's home state, where most of my inlaws live. Nuevo Leon borders Texas at Colombia. Monterrey is about two hours from Nuevo Laredo.

World Health Organization declares stage III

Current WHO phase of pandemic alert.

Current phase of alert in the WHO global influenza preparedness plan is III.

Pandemic preparedness In the 2009 revision of the phase descriptions, WHO has retained the use of a six-phased approach for easy incorporation of new recommendations and approaches into existing national preparedness and response plans

phases1-3.gif

In Phase 3, an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks. Limited human-to-human transmission may occur under some circumstances, for example, when there is close contact between an infected person and an unprotected caregiver. However, limited transmission under such restricted circumstances does not indicate that the virus has gained the level of transmissibility among humans necessary to cause a pandemic.

Phase 4 is characterized by verified human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus able to cause “community-level outbreaks.” The ability to cause sustained disease outbreaks in a community marks a significant upwards shift in the risk for a pandemic. Any country that suspects or has verified such an event should urgently consult with WHO so that the situation can be jointly assessed and a decision made by the affected country if implementation of a rapid pandemic containment operation is warranted. Phase 4 indicates a significant increase in risk of a pandemic but does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a forgone conclusion.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region (Figure 4). While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.

Comment:

Personally I believe we are at stage 5.

I almost laughed during today's White House news conference when they were trying to make like they have the whole thing under control - HAH! I just posted in Desparado's thread about a TV news photo this morning of several mexicans coming from Mexico City being unloaded off a bus in Dallas, TX. They were being interviewed by TV reporter as saying they were scared to death to stay in Mexico City, so they came here.

And they let them unload upon us. WTF were they thinking?

This must stop now.

they sure are, they are pouring in here right now. they also work the nurserys in the middle of the state. most are illegals.
most people don't realize that Michigan gets a huge amount of workers, starting now through nov. But many have just stayed and wintered over.
We get thousands of illegals here every spring.
I am worried about it being bad here my self.

Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:41am EDT
NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq briefly turned lower on Monday, and the Dow Jones industrial average pared gains, after the World Health Organization (WHO) commented on the swine flu outbreak.

* In Geneva, a WHO emergency committee could raise its pandemic alert level to phase 4 or 5 as a deadly swine flu outbreak shows no signs of slowing, a spokesman said.

* He also confirmed 40 swine flu cases now in the United States, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada and one in Spain

Who ever did this sure killed the airline industry. I know 40 people that fly regularly and won't be flying anytime soon if ever again. One is me.

If I owned an airline I would be installing a bunch of pure air systems right now. "NEW HEPA FILTER SYSTEMS INSTALLED ON EVERY AIRLINES"...

Texas raises confirmed swine flu cases to six
Mon Apr 27, 2009 8:39pm ED

By Jim Forsyth

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Texas state health authorities on Monday confirmed four more cases of swine flu that is threatening to become a pandemic, bringing the state's total to six.

To contain the outbreak, Texas officials closed 14 schools near San Antonio and one in Dallas.

In North Texas, Dallas health officials are tracking three more "probable" swine flu infections that could be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in coming days.

In Guadalupe County near San Antonio, all three confirmed cases involve students at Byron Steele High School, the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

The cases in Dallas affect a wider age group -- a 24-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 3-month-old, according to Dallas County Health and Human Services officials.

The new virus has killed up to 149 people in Mexico and there were 40 confirmed U.S. cases, though there are no confirmed U.S. deaths from the virus that spreads quickly between humans.

The World Health Organization on Monday raised its pandemic alert level to phase 4, indicating a significant increased risk of a pandemic, a global outbreak of a serious disease. It would be the world's first flu pandemic since 1968.

Elsewhere in Texas, local officials said they were tracking four possible cases in Nueces County near Corpus Christi.

In Schertz, Texas, two high school students have recovered and the third is recovering under voluntary isolation at his home, officials said.

In the middle class suburb outside San Antonio where the three confirmed swine flu cases live, residents did not show any alarm.

"It doesn't make me nervous, it's only three cases so far," said Yvette Sosa, whose daughter attends Byron Steele, one of 14 area schools that authorities closed indefinitely as a precaution. "I'm not scared yet."
