OT/MISC Wow!!! What A Deal We Got At Safeway!!

Yesterday my daughter and I went shopping in ShowLow, AZ. We went to the Safeway store because she said they had a good quality meat there.

To our amazement they had beautiful round steaks, roasts, 90% ground beef, ribs, etc. for $1.47 to $1.99 a pound. Normally $5 to $9 a lb.

The butcher was bringing out even more meat and told my daughter their freezer had quit working the day before and they were trying to sell all the meat.

We could only buy about 100 lbs due to freezer space, but were we ever happy to show up at the store just as all this stuff was being put out.

The meat was bright red and fresh. No brown patches. And it looked like the high end of their cuts.

Von's (part of Safeway) was having big sales yesterday too. We got 5 jars of Ragu for $6.50. It was a "buy 2, get 3 free" sale. Wow! The cat food we always get was .49 a can versus .69 and there were many more good deals that we took advantage of. Ironically, most of the items we bought were good prep items. :applaud:

Maybe the beef prices were cheap because ranchers and dairy farmers are reducing their herds? IF so, prices will go way up in the near future.

the color of real beef

just a little note here. i've raised our own beef for over 25 years. when i bring it home from slaughter/ butchering, the meat is brown, not red. commercial beef is injected with red dye to make it look red, what most people expect. i've spoken to the butcher a number of times while standing there in the butcher room, how fresh the beef looks in it's natural color, which is brown not red.

Being part of the TB bunch, I always get a bit suspicious when I find a super deal. My question is always, "why?"
I'm not a big meat eater, but my DD is. She is also a bit in denial of what may be down the road, so I like to believe God pushes her along even if I can't. So at least we have plenty of meat for a while. I have the rest of the stuff.:D

You are correct about the color of real beef being brownish red. NOT BRIGHT RED, unless it was not hung correctly or long enough to drain out all the blood. Even so, it should not be the bright red stuff. Pink maybe, but not red.

I also grew up on a dairy farm and we raised our own meat. I never saw bright red beef even when it was fresh slaughtered.
I won't buy meat that looks "fake".

I agree and all you sams/wal-mart shoppers beware they also package the meat in a bubble or sealed pack that is filled with a gas to maintian color and from what I have read it can keep meat looking fresh for far longer than it really is.Two articles about it . Read it and weap!:shkr:

Oh for Pete's sake people!
They got a GREAT deal because the store's freezer stopped working.

Just for once, couldn't you be happy for someone's good fortune?

Oh no, have to talk about the color of the beef and how it's wrong, and how you know better and how you can't read WHY the beef was on sale - not because of beef herds being cleared out, the damned freezer stopped working!

I'm actually surprised that someone hasn't posted that it was all OBama's fault, you know, like every other thread on this board lately!

Sheesh!

I'm THRILLED for you guys!!! YAY, a phenomenal deal you got, how cool is that?

FYI, I was with an old cowgirl once, went up town to get some meat for our yard sale cookout. She took one look at the meat case at our local market and spun on her heel saying "I don't eat horse meat!!!" I asked her what she was talking about. She said the only meat she knew of that was bright red like what was in the case, was horse meat, and being a horse woman it disgusted her. I think they were dying it, personally, but she could have been right. I quit going there when I saw the owners feeding their German shepards right off the cutting table.

For AnnCats, it IS Obama's fault. Happy now? :D

Just so everyone knows, the meat was dull red, and had no brown spots because of sitting a long time. Of course, some think that brown spots mean it has aged. But when I see brown discoloration in a supermarket, that tells me it is old and I won't buy it.

This was NOT brilliant red like horse meat.

Thanks to all those who knew what I was talking about and saw it as a great deal.

There may come a day when people won't turn their noses up at horse meat.

Wow..what a Great great deal! I like to check the local supermarket around 11pm each night when I pick up my husband from work..because any meat that they want to sell by tomorrow night, they seem to mark down around 10pm the night before. Love finding nice cuts of meat for $1.99 / lb. Not as great as being able to fill a whole freezer at once..but I'll take it! :)

stinky comment

Who peed in in your cornflakes.:D

SO - if I insist that just for once it wouldn't put your knickers in a twist to say someone got a good deal and be happy for them. that means that you have to be snotty about it? Someone peed in my cornflakes because the cruddy comments and the "I know better than everyone else" posts really need to be curbed?

It's not even whether someone does maybe know better about the color of the beef, but why post it here? Why post it at all in a thread that is about a happy wonderful chance to stock up more than one of the members ever could have dreamed!

The need to one-up and show how " smart" you are doesn't have to be instantly exercised.

A simple Hey, that's great, like some of the posts, is all that's necessary to show that other people's good fortune can be celebrated without a put-down.

Then, when the inappropriate jumping up and down and yelling "hey, look at me" is pointed out and a heartfelt "good going" is posted, you think you have to say something about someone peed in my cornflakes for objecting?

That's EXACTLY the kind of attitude that's so stinky! You HAVE to post a put-down for someone who would like to be happy for another board member/

Shame on you!:trl:

Hey anncats as far as the comment I made to you, it was just kidding around hence the smiley face.. You realy need to losen up a bit. As far as the comments about the color of the beef goes you have your choice of what you would say here about it and if you want to shelter yourself from reality thats fine but do not expect the rest of us to do the same. we are all in this together. They made a great purchase as far as the price goes, but there were other issues others had seen that anyone who cares about their fellow man would share in my opinion. I and others did in no way intend on causing problems here but wanted to make something we felt was relavant and imprortant to be known. I am here to have fun chating with people yes, but this is a prep, shtf forum and the reason it even exsits is so we can all share our knowledge of the world we live in. If it aint all a bed of roses than I hope someone lets me know that. Like when they see an area I might need a little education in. Being told how to post is not one of them. Sorry if you do not like my approach but it was in everyones best interest and I see no way that it could have been seen as an attack on anyone.

Hansa44: I would suggest you did get a deal. I have to ask have you cooked any of it yet. Sometimes I've bought beef on sale and it was tough no matter how i cooked it. If the beef is tender when cooked you are indeed fortunate. Go back and buy some more at that price.

Hey Hansa44 hope you realize I did not mean what I said in a negative way, nor did I want to cause any problems here. I spend my life trying to eat right and avoid all the bad stuff. It is not possible to eliminate it all but I feel compelled to inform people when I have knowledge of something that is applicable to a particular situation. So anyway if I did offend you, sorry. Folks, I had a similar situation recently at our local Albertson's. In case you dont know it now that the pharmacy areas have been sold off at many stores the meat department is the most profitable department. I was told by several employees (managers) of our store that the store was in trouble and being considered for closing. The meat area was experiencing big losses because of the slowdown in the economy--high end cuts were not selling and have to be trashed at best buy dates. The very next week, before a tour by home office types, the freezers in the meat area "malfunctioned" and ALL meat was lost! I was told every dime was recovered from insurance claims--Also I bought a couple hundred dollars worth of perfectly good tender loins, factory packed, for pennies on the dollar ! "Freezer malfunctions" may be another sign of hard times in the grocery business. Don't look a gift errrr-"horse " in the mouth ! LOL
