Go check it out. It's for everyone. For $30, you get about $60 worth of food. For those of you who can afford to, you can take the extra $30 you save and use it on preps. Additional add-ons can be purchased also. Our church participates in this.

If you are one of the fortunate, it's an easy way to brighten the faces of a hungry family!!

And it is really good food too! Some convience foods, but for the most part, it's good healthy stuff and well worth the money!

I've read about this before, and I sooooo wish there was a host site near us. I guess I could talk to the local churches to see if any would be willing to look into this.

we got it for the first time in December. this weekend is the order date for January.

We got SOOO much food in the box. it's only dh and I, and the box is supposed to feed a family of 4 for 1 week. if you we were down to the wire, no preps/no money, 1 box would take us through 2 weeks. the meat portions were VERY generous. veggies and fruits fresh and crisp. it's a very economical food plan. of course, you still need to "round" things out with your own bought coffee and tea, bread, etc. but the basics are all in that box.

In fact, it would be a good way for DGI folks to learn how to cook and make-do. [remember in frontier house show, where karen's food supply lasted the initial 6-week period, before they were resupplied, while adrianne's family was starving by the third week, because they'd used up all their supplies?] kind of like, that principle.

p.s., when we get january's order, I'll take pics and post them.

There is a similar group called Share Colorado. It is a good deal and the portions are generous. Be aware that some of the canned goods can be out of date.

LittleYellowFlower, thanks loads for the reminder of AFM! Their breaded chicken tenders are the best anywhere for my money! Never had any of their food that wasn't delicious. And, they take food stamps!

Last I looked they didn't offer Senior Boxes, so I am especially grateful. My mom lives on a diet of McD's double cheeseburgers - at 80 with 9 cardiac stents, mind you - and WILL NOT cook. We've got her Meals on Wheels for lunches, but this is a heck of a deal for her. (She will use a microwave as long as it isn't more than 2 steps to prepare...) I'll be talking to my brothers about it - since it's her food stamps, however, she probably will find reasons not to participate; more ways to try to manipulate us, lol....

The website has a zipcode locator for the sites closest to you. For those who will read here but can't get to the link LYF posted above, here's a monthly menu, this one for January...

Angel Food Ministries might be a good bargain for folks who live in other parts of the country where the cost of living is high, but here in the Memphis area where the cost of living is lower, their prices are similar to what we actually pay around here without buying from them.

And by the time you take into account that your family will not eat everything they sell (too much processed foods, too little of the staples you can cook from scratch with), well, it is not a bargain for Everybody.

Folks have to think about what their families like to eat, and then price the things Angel Food Ministries offers in their own locales, and then determine for themselves whether what they offer is good enough to purchase...

YMMV is very appropriate here...

Thanks. I had forgotten about them!

DD is tight on money with 2 boys ages 8 and 2 and MIL is over 80. She hasn't said much lately, but I know her limited income is starting to not be enough to cover all her medical, housing and food bills.

I think it will help them both. I had mentioned it to them a long time ago, but MIL pride apparently got in the way to go do it on her own or maybe her fear of driving to places she's not familiar with.

The site closest to me actually had a link to order online! None of the other 6 sites within 20 miles of her had that ability, you had to go in person to order, then go back to pick it up. Very convenient for me with my limited time too. If neither one of them like or want to accept it, I'll either find someone else to give it to or keep it for us.

We have purchased their food 2 times. The first time there was a lot of name brand food and we loved everything. The second time all the food had wrappers saying Angle Food. Everything tasted strange. We still have some of it in the freezer and we only eat it with other foods. So one month great and one month very bad.

lilbit,

I went to order in person too, last month. however, when we picked up the food the following weekend, they had people at the tables, with January's menu, and you could order right there. I didn't have enough cash on me, or I would have ordered then.

so, it might turn out that you only have to go when the food comes in, and you can order right there for next month.

oh. I forgot.

with our order, we got one of those frozen entres of salisbury steaks, in gravy. Oncor, I think, is the brand. [don't feel like going to the freezer to look ;) ]

anyway, we don't buy or eat things like that, because there's too much salt. dh has high BP.

I do NOT buy pet food, since the chinese scare, and just make homemade for our two dogs, from rice made with the vegetable juice left from cooking green beans, or carrots or what have you, and some meat.

anyway, the frozen entre became a big hit with our dogs. And, it went a long way, one pattie for two dogs, mixed in with the rice, so it lasted almost a week.

Barry - at one time I costed this out against my local stores also and you're correct - it doesn't always equal the huge savings you think it will. I don't remember details, but the Angel Food DID save a few dollars, but when I looked at the things that we wouldn't eat (more than likely) it came out about the same. I think I'll run it again to see what happens.

I was doing this for a while till i started getting the meat packages with holes in them. Three months in a row. Stopped doing it. I'll take my hard earned money elsewhere. Never did figure out if it was accidents or intentional, but i alerted the church I was getting them from. She said she'd never had a problem in the years she's been doing it. Ohwell. I had great results for the months and months I did it prior that bad run. And that was summer when it happened.

YMMV

"A hand up, not a hand out"

Still doing Katrina Relief Vol work on the MS Gulf coast. The agency I am with advises our seniors and disabled about this program. I also work at the distribution center on the 'food Saturday'. We had 200 orders in Nov; 300 in Dec!

Barry is right, sometimes the cost isn't comparible. However, down here, lots of folks still have unmet needs. This program helps a lot. Now that gas prices are down, I use the extra $ saved to buy a grandma or single mom a box, anonymously.

The food has always been fresh, fruit and vegs fresh and crisp; however, thx for the head-up re holes in meat packs. Could be that the frozen package was dropped or carelessly thrown in packing boxes, cutting a hole in plastic wrap. I shall watch for that problem, and advise the dist. director.

Like Barry's area -- it's not worth it here. I check the cost of the main box each month for a neighbor. I just priced out the entire collection of February offerings (except the "senior meals" - they're disgusting - I was given a couple of boxes back when they included low fat margarine pats, milk & bread - the latter two items was the only part remotely edible without some serious doctoring/smothering. An old can of C-Rations would have been tastier.) and, as usual, it's cheaper to purchase the items at even the most expensive supermarket in my area.

The only savings to be had next month for us were the tangerines and that's assuming they don't go on sale! But you have to buy the overpriced stuff to get the tangerines - so no real deal there, either.

SHARE (mentioned by a previous poster) used to be a fabulous bargain & terrific food but the program died here years ago (no sponsoring group). For those who have SHARE available in their state, check it out ... from what I've been reading some still have a great program, some not so great. They are not a one size fits all frozen food package like the main AFM box. Each state is different. California & Wisconsin have organic pk options, Florida is practically all meat -- not sure about the other states.

Actually the Florida boxes have 5 meats and then a selection of fresh fruits and veggies. The meats have been getting smaller and have moved away from beef to more chicken, I guess it is cheaper. We volunteer to unload and fix packages. We usually buy one for an elderly neighbor and several times a year buy one for ourselves. www.shareflorida.org

Well we picked ours up yesterday and I can confidently say that it is WELL worth the money. Food was fresh and we recieved just what we ordered. We ate the ribeye steaks last night and they were great. We also got the chicken package and had the popcorn chicken today and they were real good. Thanks for the info on this we will be using AFM for here on out.

Thanks for clarifying Florida's packages & the link. My info on your state came from my ex inlaws that live in the Tampa area and apparently buy the boxes that aren't available at the outlying distribution locations. When we had the program here, I particularly liked the fact that we could customize our order with add-ons of individual items that our family liked the best.

A lot of the SHARE programs don't have websites (Central IL/IN is one of them) and prices vary. Just do a search for Self Help and Resource Exchange Food within your state or a neighboring state. As with AFM, you need to know your local prices to determine if it's a good deal -- Here's a few more of the SHARE program sites for comparison:

Wisconsin/N. IL/Mich UP
http://www.sharewi.org/
Colorado (includes parts of NE/WY/SD/NM)
http://www.sharecolorado.com/index.cfm?action=menus
Iowa (also areas of MO/NE/SD)
http://www.shareiowa.com/index.php
DC/MD/VA
http://www.sharedc.org/
S CA
http://www.goldensharefoods.com/

Since SHARE is operated similar to a co-op, our program failed due to the very minimal service commitment and too many "entitlement" types that were unwilling to do even one minute of anything they weren't getting paid to do so the sponsors said forget it.

Some of our local schools are having the same issue with the Market Day program - lack of volunteers in certain neighborhoods.

We just started it a couple months ago. Finally found a church in town that has started the program. Can't beat the prices. As for helping out with an extra $30 to feed another family, I just can't do it. Not that I don't have the money, but I know it would probably be going to some one who was just to damn lazy to help themselves. I already donate a ton of deer and wild hog meat to the Hunters for the Hungry program here. And I do mean a ton of meat. Can't say I don't help feed them already.

I ordered the regular box and fruit & veggie box for Jan. I picked up our boxes yesterday and was impressed! All the meat was frozen solid, no worries. Veggies and fruit were all in great shape too. So far we've eaten the burgers, some potatoes, clementines, pears and those little cookies - all very good. OK, the cookies were kinda cheap, but not bad.

The prices were definitely good, compared to grocery deals here where I live. You could possibly meet or beat the prices if you shop around a lot, but some of us just don't have the time! This is like being led by the hand and told: "here, buy this -- this is what's on sale this week!" :)
