St. Louis City Leader Says Police Ineffective, Tells Residents to Get Armed

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis city leader frustrated with the police response to rising crime called Tuesday on residents to arm themselves to protect their lives and property.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe said police are ineffective, outnumbered or don't care about the increase in crime in his north St. Louis ward. St. Louis has had 157 homicides in 2008, 33 more than last year at this time.

"The community has to be ready to defend itself, because it's clear the economy is going to get worse, and criminals are getting more bold," Troupe, 72, said Tuesday.

Troupe said that when he and residents approached a district police commander last year, they were told "there was nothing he could do to protect us and the community ... that he didn't have the manpower."

Police did not immediately return requests for comment. Chief Dan Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he understands Troupe's frustration but doesn't support citizens arming themselves.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."

So he should disarm himself and his department and give those arms to the folks that need them and know how to use them.

Interesting that the administration is telling people to arm themselves and as always the police are against it. Usually they both are against an civil armed society.

I can't understand why the police wouldn't want law abiding citizens arming themselves...to the teeth even. Or is it that they would rather just clean up the bodies of the innocent rather than do the paperwork explaining how an innocent person whacked a dirtbag? Or is that they have a superiority complex and a law abiding armed citizen threatens their complex? Or is it that they somehow don't understand that criminals don't abide by gun laws, especially those who would be likely to shoot an officer?

Can somebody explain to me which one it is? (rhetorical question)

"An armed society is a polite society"

Ever watched an old western movie and seen two cowboys walk up to each other and touch the brim of their hats at each other? Nice and polite, right? Wrong! They did that to show the other one they weren't going to draw on them; that their gun hand was empty and too far away from their gun to be of any real danger to them.

Personally, I'd like for it to get back to where we could each do the 'open carry' thing. I like to wear mine low on my hip and tied down. Ain't as fast as I used to be, but still just as deadly. 6 rounds of .357 magnums inside a 6 inch circle at 40 paces. Wanna 'step into the street' for a little 'Texas two-steppin' with me? :D

fire those ole boys is right , If every home had a gun in it, you would have less violence, if he is talking in the hood, they have guns any way.

It is every citizens duty to be armed said our Founding Fathers, not that many pay attention to them much anymore.

Tell you what, I never met a cop,a street cop that didn't advocate that every home owner should have a gun.

Now the officials, the ones in the white shirts, are a cop of a different color.

They don't go out on the street and see reality.

I've listened to all of your nonsense
I've tried to make sense of it
It's left me broke and bleeding
Slow burn, American Rage
I take the hours they give me
My wife sleeps all alone
My son, he barely knows me
I am American Rage
My father sweat oil in a flat field
My mother taught children in school
We fought, and saved, and prayed
We bleed American Rage
I work every second I'm breathing
I'm on the clock every second I'm alive
But still I'm slowly sinking
I am American Rage
I'll be right behind you in your dreams, dear -
I'll be right behind you in your nightmare

(I google my screen name every few years to see what pops up, found the song tonight and thought it was both cool and funny)

Most cops have a 'gun-ego' thing believing that only intensely trained people are capable of carrying a firearm. I used to say, "the only ones needing training are the ones that need training".

It will take them a bit but they will get used to 'the new way'.

They obviously need more gun control in St. Louis - i.e. one gun per two hands. Much more accurate that way.

:applaud: I hope we have a few more like Mr. Troupe!
Chief Isom is part of the problem. Around here, police officers I know admit the police just mop up after the incident. They cannot protect you. "I carry a gun...carrying a cop it too heavy!", how true.
