Cop shoots himself after gun-safety lesson

Ohio police chief injured following bid to teach daughter about firearms

updated 6:17 a.m. ET, Sat., Nov. 29, 2008
MONROE, Ohio - A top cop mistakenly shot himself in the thigh after giving his daughter a lesson in gun safety, police said.

Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber, 54, was preparing to clean his Glock .45-caliber pistol on Friday and didn't realize the gun was still loaded, according to a police report.

Written by officers from neighboring Monroe, the report said the bullet entered Schwarber's leg just above the knee.

When officers arrived, they found the chief lying on the floor with a towel covering his leg. Schwarber was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The hospital had no record of Schwarber being treated or admitted. A home phone number for him couldn't be found.

That's why alot of dept's. are steering away from the Glock. You have to pull the trigger, to break it down, and dummies forget about the round in the chamber.:sb:

Some cops shouldn't be allowed to handle firearms. I guess this guy is one of them....

It shouldn't matter that you have to pull the trigger to break down a weapon. That is a simple task one does _after_ they _know_ the weapon is unloaded. It doesn't take a genius to understand this. What is this saying about the quality of new hires in law enforcement?

Here is the classic YouTube Vid of the 'polize' warning his classroom that "he is the only one here trained to use a Glock 40" and then shooting his foot off.

About the funniest video I've ever seen....

All guns are ALWAYS loaded, it's the first damn rule of gun safety. What a moron. If you don't know the safety rules you have no business teaching anyone else.

Idiot.

Breaking at least two of the fundamental safety rules:
Always point the muzzle in a safe direction
Always assume the firearm is loaded until you personally
check it, at that moment.

Fools like this give gun owners a bad name.

As far as I know, a lot of police chiefs are politicians...politicians that may have never worked the streets on patrol. This kind of chief isn't going to go to bat against the city council to get his troops the gear they need or fight for a pay raise. This is the kind of chief that is happy as long as he doesn't have to ruffle any feathers. I know of at least one police chief that spent over a year trying to QUALIFY, by department standards, to carry a duty weapon.

IMHO, this is the wrong kind of person to head a police agency. Appoint a lieutenant or patrol sergeant, they have been there and done that. Don't just appoint some schmo because he kisses booty the way the mayor likes.

sorry ravekid, only a moron pulls the trigger when the sights aren't on the target. you NEVER, NEVER, NEVER touch the trigger unless you want the gun to fire...period!

designing a firearm that forces the owner to violate this most basic gun handling law in order to disassemble his weapon is simply insane. designing a weapon that is 2/3rd's cocked when chambered and HAS NO SAFETY is criminally insane. people say carrying a 1911 cocked and locked is unsafe yet have no problem carrying a glock cocked and UNlocked...welcome to dumbed down america. :shk:
