LEE COUNTY: Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott may have more to worry about than just the court of public opinion. Federal investigators are now looking into whether Scott broke the law by campaigning for John McCain.

Officials with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel say they have received so many phone calls from the public that they launched an investigation into Sheriff Scott on Tuesday.

The question is - did he use his position as sheriff to influence an election? If so, he could be in violation of a federal election law called the Hatch Act.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office receives more than $1 million in federal grant money from everything from human trafficking to bullet proof vests.

But if Sheriff Scott is found in violation of the Hatch Act, the feds can pull two years salary worth of federal funding - the equivalent to $300,000 for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Another possibility is removal from office.

Regarding the federal investigation, Sheriff Scott sent us this statement:

"I am on duty 24/7 and 365 whether in or out of uniform. Like every other elected official, I am aware of from President to Governor to State Representatives, etc. We engage in political activities whether for ourselves as candidates or for others. As of this writing, I am unaware of having done anything to generate all this attention other than using the senator's full name."

We should also point out that Bill Cameron in Charlotte County and Kevin Rambosk in Collier County were both reassigned to avoid violating the Hatch Act.

Cameron is still under investigation.

As for how long Scott's investigation will take, the feds say they'd like to have all of the Hatch Act cases wrapped up before the November election.

The story loads for me very slowly. Safari on Mac.

For Pete's sake, what did the sheriff do that was so awful? He said
Barak Hussein Obama.

And now there's conniptions. How STUPID can it get? The candidate's real name IS Barak Hussein Obama.

And yes, he was raised islamic. Why do the facts get ppl so riled up? How could you cover up such facts? How stupid is everybody?

Why not simply discuss how insane it is to have an islamic candidate while our country goes down the tubes from spending on a war with islamics?

There are so many disconnects I think I've died and landed in the funny farm.

Another story on the same page says "phone lines scorched" after sheriff used Barack Obama's full name during the Palin rally. Apparently, people are upset that he used the name "Hussein". The article goes on to say that both campaigns have criticized the sheriff's use of Obama's middle name--McCain's side saying it is a distraction, and Obama's side claiming it's fueling the rumor that Obama is a muslim, which it says is not true.

Here's first story:

Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott took the stage moments ago as one of the introductory speakers at a rally here for Sarah Palin. After delivering brief remarks in support of Palin, Sheriff Scott flipped the switch and used Barack Obama’s middle name in order to incite the crowd of thousands of people who have already gathered here.

“On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” the law enforcement officer said.

Now FEDS??????????

Don't tell me we've descended so far down the rabbit hole that it is now illegal to utter the factual actual name of a candidate for President of the United States!

LEE COUNTY: Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott is standing by some controversial comments he made at Governor Sarah Palin's rally on Monday - comments already gaining national attention.

While speaking on stage, Scott referred to the Democratic presidential candidate by his full name, Barack Hussein Obama.

"Ladies and gentleman, there are three types of people in our country today. There are people that make things happen, there are people that watch things, and there are people who wonder what happened. On November 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened," said Sheriff Scott to the crowd at Germain Arena Monday afternoon.

Those comments didn't go over well with the McCain Campaign, but Sheriff Scott says he meant no harm by his remarks.

"Apparently there are a lot of people inferring something from his name, I don't know. My name is Joseph. I don't know what you would infer from that. Am I Joseph in the stable with Mary? What do you take from that? I don't know," said Sheriff Scott.

The McCain Campaign sent out the following statement in response after the remarks were made:

"We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November."

The Obama Campaign also sent out a response of its own.

"It's an implication that whoever has a Muslim-sounding name is Muslim, but the fact of the matter is he's Christian and always has been. It sounds like the tone of today's rally was based on negative attacks and fear tactics."

Voters we spoke to were split on the issue.

"It's an effort to derive negative emotion," said Lee County resident Mark Besser.

"A guy was using his name and if somebody is trying to come back after the fact and say that he said his full name for political reasons, I think we have a problem," said voter Greg Bettice.

In February of this year, controversy rose over the derisive use of Obama's middle name by a radio host during a McCain function.

Sheriff Scott claimed to be unaware and says he did not intend to provoke the crowd in the same manner.

I heard about this on Fox earlier, apparently he was in full uniform with his side arm... that's not cool.

I think tomorrow morning every citizen should stand on a street corner and yell HUSSEIN at the top of their lungs. They can accuse all of us of political incorrectness for speaking the actual name of an actual candidate. It would expose the idiocy of all this.

It is always best to acknowledge reality. Insanity is not a solution.

Why do you think Rush and Glenn Beck don't say it anymore? Maybe they had a visit from the SS.

God has a plan, Trust it!
I often wonder why a man, who already changed his name, then changed it back again, wouldn't have changed his middle name if he knew at the time that he changed it back he was going into law and politics?

What was stopping him 5 years ago from changing his middle name...obviously the process is not a stranger to him as he was previously known as "Barry".

All the uproar about THIS? The sheriff dared to say his name? LOL!

The craziest thing is - McCain's camp agreed it was inappropriate. :shr::screw:

Yeah. It's only "Cool" if a Sheriff and prosecuter use their powers to shut people the hell up about the choklit messiah. All hail honey brown! Yoo hoo! Shut the rest of the mofo world up but all hail obama!

It would really good if Palin and McCain started referring to each other with their middle names included. Then, where can he stand????

Have you ever noticed that when we refer to assassins and serial killers, we almost always use their middle names as well... ?

I dont want agents of the State (which state officials are when in uniform) endorsing ANY candidate. As a private citizen, they can do as they please.

Apparently, this is about more than just his saying HUSSEIN. It's about whether or not he violated the Hatch Act.

So .......What if this same individual used Martin Luther Kings' full name ??

Me thinks that the Obama-nites are way too sensitive....... Then again, maybe anything which even hints at Obama-mans' true nature and self, is something that must at all costs, be avoided.............

Interesting how the story has been rewritten. As it is now, the title makes no sense. The only reference to what he did that brought the phone calls is a remark in the sherrif's quote that he used the senator's full name. There is no longer any reference in the report to this fact.

Yes. They have changed the article to cover up the real reason that he was being investigating--using BHO's full name. But that is why he was investigated. The rest is a cover up. The US is dead.

OMG. How far can one stray from the issue?

It's not about anybody using his middle name.

It's about a man who is on the taxpayer's payroll, in uniform, campaigning. No more, no less.

Nobody despises BHO more than me. But the guy should have been in civilian clothes and on his own time instead of on the taxpayer's time.

He was not campaigning. That was only stated in the articles after. You think other than saying "i only used his full name" he was at a rally as any other citiezen and posed a question.

Should the people of Lee County be concerned that they have such a fear-mongering jackass for a sheriff? Most certainly.

Riiiiiiiiight. He's fear-mongering and a jackass because he dared say:

"On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” ?

Um.....yes, that is definately more alarming then Barack Hussein Obama saying In Elko NV last month:

"I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face,"
