FOOD The Whole Cabin smells of Cinnamon, Allspice, & Cloves!

To lighten the mood around here, thought I'd share! [Mods feel free to move when everyone starts complaining about shorting-out keyboards!]

Since we had a late spring, many of our tomatoes are still green, so I decided to make some homemade Old Fashion Green Tomato Mincemeat pie filling.

The smells are just wonderful - filling the entire cabin with the smells of fall and reminding me of the smells from Grandma's kitchen each fall during harvest!

Sliced too many green apples for the mincemeat so I whipped up an apple pie!

The trees are all turning and Elk season opens - out our back door - this Friday!

Not looking forward to winter - especially after last year's record setter - but fall can be soooo very delightful and calming!!!

Enjoy the pics everyone and let's never forget to give thanks for the blessings that are bestowed upon us each and everyday!

I used this recipe - recommended by one of my DW patients! She provided a sample and it was incredible! The only change she and I made was to reduce the amount of brown sugar to 2 cups instead of 3 cups. I modified it slightly by adding a 1/4 cup of honey. You know ... gotta add your own touch!

We're suppose to have our first hard-frost tonight!

[FONT=Verdana,Arial]summerthyme - should note that I also used the chopped orange peel option, which really adds a nice touch!

Just tasted a sample I had cooling in the frig and wow - it's awesome!

Canning jars are just about ready ... enjoy!!!

Thank you very much. I know what I'll be doing this weekend. On top of about four hundred other "must dos" that is! Sigh..

Thanks again.

UPDATE ...

Just got done canning the Mincemeat, cooked in down so it was nice and thick and rich. Followed the recipe and got 4 full quarts! Probably would've gotten 5 qts. if I didn't let it thicken as much.

Keep on eye on it and stop cooking it when the consistency is to your liking!

It sounds wonderful but I've never heard of this dish. Is this a dessert? How is it served or what is it served with? The recipe just says cook and freeze but no other information.

ejagno: Mincemeat makes into a wonderful, spicy pie served warm with a hard sauce or whipped topping. In the old days, meat was actually one of the ingredients. Served in the winter, especially at Christmas.

Love mincemeat... ranks right up there with pecan pie and fruit cake!!!

ETA: Observer.... pie looks wonderful! Mouth is watering right now. Heck, I'd be hanging my mouth over that big pot, spooin' it into my mouth. YUMMMMM

UPDATE #2

Well the pie turned out great. Since I had the allspice and cloves out for the mincemeat, I mixed a quarter teaspoon of each into the apple pie recipe. Never done that before, but it turned out great. Modifying my recipe file tonight.

Like some of you mentioned, this mincemeat filling was the first time I ever prepared anything with green tomatoes ... so when I looked at the website for the recipe and saw those other Green Tomato recipes, well, what the heck ... I sliced some more up this evening and made Green Fried Tomatoes!

They were actually fantastic - went well with the pot roast too - and with the fresh apple pie for desert ... life doesn't get any better than that!!!

So now I've become new found green tomato fan!
