BOSTON (AP) - Rep. Barney Frank said Monday that Republican criticism of Democrats over the nation's housing crisis is a veiled attack on the poor that's racially motivated. The Massachusetts Democrat, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said the GOP is appealing to its base by blaming the country's mortgage foreclosure problem on efforts to expand affordable housing through the Community Reinvestment Act.
He said that blame is misplaced, because those loans are issued by regulated institutions, while far more foreclosures were triggered by high-cost loans made by unregulated entities.
"They get to take things out on poor people," Frank said at a mortgage foreclosure symposium in Boston. "Let's be honest: The fact that some of the poor people are black doesn't hurt them either, from their standpoint. This is an effort, I believe, to appeal to a kind of anger in people."
Frank also dismissed charges the Democrats failed on their own or blocked Republican efforts to rein in the mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The federal government recently took control of both entities.
House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio called Frank's remarks "a lame, desperate attempt to divert Americans' attention away from the Democratic party's obstruction of reforms that would have reined in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and helped our nation avoid this economic crisis."
"Congressman Frank should retract his ridiculous statements and start taking responsibility for the role he and other top Democrats played in putting Main Street Americans in this mess," Boehner said.
Frank said Republicans controlled Congress for 12 years and passed no regulation, while Democrats passed a Bush administration Fannie and Freddie regulation package since gaining control of the House and Senate in January 1997.
"If I could have stopped a Republican bill during the Bush years, I would have started with the war in Iraq. Then I would have gone to the Patriot Act. Then I would have gone on to the hundreds of millions in tax cuts," said Frank, to applause from the audience.
The longtime congressman is being challenged this fall by both Republican and independent candidates. He has been criticized in his liberal district for being one of the leaders of congressional efforts last week to win approval of a $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan.

Not only Obama but all Democrat actions and programs are now beyond criticism? This is just the kind of idiocy that feeds anger and resentment.

So if you're a bank, and like any other investor you look for a safe return on your investment, and you decide to eliminate someone who has limited or no previous credit history, you're somehow prejudiced against black people? Where on the application for a loan does it specify race?

Maybe wrong example. Applications for loans didn't include racial classification until the government required it.

You're a bank and you decide to follow the government's encouragement and avoid lawsuit and trial alledging discrimination based on race or location (red-lining.) You decide to minimise chance of a lawsuit and possible short term loss and take the loan, knowing you can then "flip" the loan to some other larger institution who has more resources (and influence in Congress) to survive failure of said loan. And when all this froth floats to the top of the investment banking pot and the pot boils over, the bank who took the loan originally is at fault?

Come-on Barney. We all didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday.

That guy is dangerous.

Barney says things that are so queer no one should listen to him anymore. Go crawl back under Obama's overcoat and tap your feet Frankster, don't forget your wide stance.

I'd prefer a Alaskan malamute or huskey over the Irish pit bull.

Oh, please don't insult Irish pit bulls like that. What a horrible thing to do.

He should take his mushmouth to parts unknown, never to be seen again. What a despicable creature he is.

Ahhh if life was fair, Barney fwank and his butt buddy Chris Dodd would both be sitting on the hot seat in a courtroom answering a few questions about THEIR involvement in this damned mess.

BUT...I'll see a big fat guy come down the chimney before I ever see THOSE two nitwits ever held to account.

Well, from what I have read he is right, most of the subprime loans were taken on by blacks and illegals, so the attack that popped the bubble was racially motivated. But he is trying to spin this true information now to make these people victims...so what's new? Remember Janet Reno, Frank? She made it a law that the banks couldn't deny these people, point your stinking fingers back at your own party.

It's not racially motivated - it's economically motivated - if you can't pay your mortgage payment, you shouldn't own a house.
