Fighting for our right to freedom of speech?
Yeah I know....
Seems dubious at best.
Gee if it wasn't for her son, we wouldn't be able to say bad things about Bush on this board....

Yes, seriously... How much freedom of speech did the Iraqis have under Hussein?

So we are fighting in Iraq so they can have Freedom of Speech?
too bad she didn't say that.
She said he was fighting for our right of Freedom of Speech.

Well it's obvious how much Obama cherishes the First Amendment isn't it....

About as much as the Second.

Actually, I think it was a great retort... and, why wouldn't it be?

Then again, I wasn't ever out there protesting our actions in Viet Nam because I was just a little kid. And, of course, my dad was actually over there. One of his dearest friends who really became like another father to me after my own dad died was over there fighting.

So, yeah, what the hell do you not get about FIGHTING for freedom?

You won't know what you've got until it's gone.

It was obvious the crowd "got it" too...

Of course no one mentions that Obama has put out a call for his supporters to "welcome" Sarah wherever she speaks...
That's his idea of free speech.

She handled herself very well; although, sadly she is in error. Iraq has done absolutely zero for our "freedoms".

"Fighting for our freedom" is a catchy phrase that neo-cons - and unfortunately - the ignorant believers love to toss around. It sounds great and catchy and seems to really divide the line of "patriotic" and "unpatriotic", but what it is typically followed with is probably far more truthful (and sad, IMHO) - that is "and American interests abroad".

That vague and sinister blanket expression that covers oil, entangling alliances, poppy fields, etc., etc....

That is admirable and cool, but when did the constitution care about Iraqi's rights to free speech, and is that really why we went to war with them?

I thought it was about WoMD.

I suppose there is a serious philosophical disagreement here regarding exactly what this war is about.

My position is that we ARE in a war to protect our fundamental freedoms and our way of life (which we apparently take for granted) and fighting an enemy that seeks to DESTROY our nation, piss on our Constitution and enslave anyone who does not kneel by the sword of Allah.

If you feel otherwise, I can see how there could be a disagreement.

How far we've sunk when standing up for freedom (no matter where it is) is now equated with "neocon" and ignorance and patriotism is now a BAD thing...

How jaded we have become when we don't recognize the threat of brutal regimes like Iraq, or the threat they pose to us because some of you hate Bush so much that you believe that "oil, entangling alliances, poppy fields, etc., etc.... " are the reasons we are there.

Palin's statement was simple, direct and on target. Coming from a mom who has a son in harm's way...

Kiss my patriotic a$$.

Aside from why we're fighting in Iraq, I have great respect for Gov. Palin's acting on her understanding that people have the right to disagree with her, in public, and not be punished for it.

Whcih is more than we can get from Obama.

So some of you are attacking (or being sarcastic to) Sarah Palin for NOT browbeating the guy who was protesting while she was speaking? Amazing.

Would you rather that she handle it the way zero does? Mocking and then having his goons drag the guy away?

BTW- to answer your specific point...ANY member of the armed services who serves anywhere in this world is in effect, protecting our rights. Our right to protest among them.

My uncle died as a pilot in Viet Nam, his remains not found or recovered until Bill Clinton was President. I don't think he died a wasted death. I believe with all my heart that he died with all the honor and sacrifice of someone who was trying in his own way, of serving to preserve and defend our rights.

That some of you choose to believe that place or time or your agreement or lack thereof with the reason for that war (or any other war) makes that service less pure, less important, less worthy is sad...and wrong.

Obama has already stated that he effectively won't be pulling the troops out of Iraq any quicker than McCain.

So, for the lefties, what is your argument - that McCain would have invaded Iraq if he were President? Or that Palin would have? Who's to say that Biden would not have as President? Or that Obama would not have attacked any of a number of countries in Africa for different reasons?

seriously

you just don't get it. Doesn't matter if it is Iraq, Vietnam, or Korea
They are not worth the life of one American soldier. They were war fought for "oil, entangling alliances, poppy fields, etc., etc.... but not for our freedoms. Wars or Police actions call them what you will but as Aardaerimus said they were fought for "American interests" abroad and not the noble reasons some of you suggest.
