Late Night Comedy Shows Fixate on Republicans

NEW YORK: It'd be hard to know by watching late night comedy shows who the Democratic presidential candidate is since all the jokes are about the Republican ticket.

You'd hardly know the Democrats have even chosen a presidential candidate, judging from late-night comedy monologues. It was Republican John McCain and -- oh, by the way -- his vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, who claimed most of the jokesters' attention.

"John McCain's campaign has closed their offices in Michigan and they say they won't try to compete for votes there," noted NBC "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien on Monday. "Apparently this is part of McCain's strategy to try to win votes only in the original 13 colonies."

"John McCain blew off Michigan! Well, I know how they feel," said CBS "Late Show" host David Letterman. McCain canceled an appearance on Letterman's show two weeks ago.

"Maybe you've noticed that all of John McCain's problems began when he bailed out on this show. Are you aware of that? Well, the road to the White House runs right through here!"

Craig Ferguson, host of CBS' "Late Late Show," said that "at this point, it's a race to see what drops faster: the stock market or John McCain's poll numbers."

Of course, the stock market's plunge was a popular topic among the comics, with Letterman devoting his Top Ten list to "Ways to Make the Financial Crisis More Fun." Ranked in second place: "Enjoy the blank stare when Katie Couric asks Sarah Palin what the FDIC stands for."

He also poked fun at Palin's gaffe when, addressing a group Sunday, she referred to Afghanistan as "our neighboring country."

"Apparently," cracked Letterman, "she can see bin Laden's cave from her house."

On Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," host Stephen Colbert took an approving look back at Thursday's vice presidential debate.

"Both candidates surpassed expectations," he said. "Sarah Palin proved she could speak. And Joe Biden proved he could STOP speaking."

And NBC "Tonight" show host Jay Leno called attention to a candidate for governor of Bangkok who assaulted a TV reporter for asking him tough questions on the air.

"Today Sarah Palin said, 'You can do THAT? Where's Katie Couric?"'

They just take the material as it comes. It's not their fault that McCain and Palin do and say so many more things that can easily be made fun of.

Char, that's not it at all. A few weeks ago, a news story was posted here on TB about why the comics don't do more Obama. They responded that it wouldn't be politically correct, and that they would be labelled racist. So just like "fat jokes" are the only PeeCee jokes these days (evidently being fat is some kind of moral crime for which belittling the fat person is not only allowed, but encouraged), the only politicians that can have jokes made about them are WHITE....

No surprise there. Hollyweird and the entertainment industry is completely infested with bleeding heart liberal hypocrites who would rather pay for carbon units than not fly their private jets. I hate them just as much as I hate the neocon facists. If the left would have done something when they had the chance when they took congress over, I would give them credit but they are just a bunch of crooks and the TeeVee people can all go F themselves as far as I'm concerned.

Very true and blatantly noticeable.

SNL can portray Palin as a ditz making fun of her woodsman skills and accent and such but if they even touched Obama - not that they have any desire to do so - the media outrage of the pro p.c. factions would be headline news.

What a mess.

Comedy will always go after the more interesting character. Don't forget all the runs with the Clintons and Al Gore that they have done over the years. Lighten up! Palin in particular provides good material for them to work with, so they are going to run with it!

Talented comedians can find humor and lampoon anything.

Obama, the potentially first black Prez in U.S. history, isn't "interesting"? The guy is a potential goldmine of comedy. How about Obama as a African tribesman as President? Maybe have him gutting a goat in the Oval Office? Or a skit on Obama's church and the "G*d d**n America" incident with his now former minister? Or Obama as Prez in the White House and everyone keeps thinking he's hired help. Or, while acting like fierce opponenets for the nomination, a behind the scenes forbidden love scenario between Obama and Hillary with Hillary telling him she likes the way Obama's polling is going? Or even better, forbidden love between Hillary and Michele Obama in Hillarys payback for Bubba's fling?

Did you see them pick on Kerry or Gore?

To politically incorrect, right?

It's blatantly obvious that the propaganda component of the T.V. comedy machine that brings Americans their sense of a mass reality is, to use their own rhetoric, prejudiced and biased against Repubs.

I don't think it has anything to do with Republicans or Democrats. In reading your post I can see exactly why they tread carefully with Obama. You're mostly going after his color and that would start endless lawsuits. And possibly race riots. It's far easier and cheaper to attack a white woman and man, than it would be to attack a black man.

Actally SNL had some skits blasting the Dems on the financial crisis.

But not so amazingly they pulled them from their web site. Think maybe Obama gave them a call????
