The headlines of the paper read a little differently, "Obama Drama" in bold letters, lol. There are also several pages of comments left by readers at the link below. Way too many for me to try and post. I have a feeling this woman's life will never be the same.

Secret Service visits Lufkin woman after 'death threat' allegation from an Obama campaign volunteer

By JESSICA SAVAGE
The Lufkin Daily News

Monday, October 06, 2008

A Lufkin woman received a surprise visit from the Secret Service last week because of a "death threat" comment she reportedly made about Sen. Barack Obama to a campaign volunteer asking for her support of the presidential candidate.

Two federal agents arrived at Jessica Hughes' home Thursday to ask her if she said, "I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor."

Jessica and Micah Hughes say two Secret Service agents showed up on their doorstep Thursday after a campaign volunteer for Sen. Barack Obama accused her of making a 'death threat' during a phone conversation a day earlier.

Hughes said her words were deliberately twisted by a volunteer who was apparently unhappy Hughes was rude during a phone conversation the two had. The Lufkin mother, a Republican, said she received a call on her cell phone Wednesday from a woman with the Obama Volunteers of Texarkana.

"She asked if I was an Obama supporter, to which I replied, 'No, I don't support him. Your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the state Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time.' (And then) I hung up."

(Hughes is referring to a "born alive" Illinois bill that did not pass in the Illinois state Senate in 2005 and had previously been opposed by Obama because he said it undermined Roe v. Wade, according to FactCheck.org, a non-partisan organization. A federal version of the bill, which Obama said he would have supported, passed by unanimous consent and was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2002.)

Obama Campaign Communications for Texas director Josh Taylor declined to comment Monday, refusing to answer any questions and referring the matter to the Secret Service, which he said is conducting an investigation. A message left with a Secret Service agent in Houston was not immediately returned.

Hughes said she was surprised to see two Secret Service agents at her door, and upset to learn that the conversation she had with the volunteer apparently had not been recorded.

"I find it hard to believe that (campaign volunteers) don't tape these calls. They call people unsolicited and they aren't monitoring the calls or recording them? I think that is absolutely ridiculous," she said.

"I mean, how often must this happen — that someone is rude to a volunteer that they don't want to talk to?"

Hughes said she wants to file a countercomplaint against the volunteer.

"She has made a charge that will follow me the rest of my life," she said.

"I find that repugnant and violating — that some person got her undies in a bundle because she didn't like what I had to say."

I REALLY hate those damned political calls. I used to simply say "no, I'm not interested" and hang up. Then, after I found out that the "Do Not Call Registry" specifically exempted these creeps, I got angry.

I went to "what part of 'do not call' don't you get?" but most of them seemed totally clueless about what I even meant.

So now, I tell them "Listen closely. We signed up for the "Do Not Call" list because we do not have time to run to answer the phone for calls WE don't want. We're running a business here, and it's inconvenient for us. because your candidate chooses to ignore the spirit of the law, I'll never vote for him/her".

And I make sure I ask them how to spell the candidates name, and what party they are affiliated with, so I'm certain I'm "not voting" for the right person!

Oddly, I've gotten a LOT fewer calls lately.

Never say the word "bomb" in an airport and never use the word "dead" when talking about the president or a candidate... OK...got it...

But, how do you keep people from "saying" that you said something... That used to be called "hearsay evidence" and was inadmissible... I guess it's admissible, now.

USSS doesn't have evidentiary limits. Never have, likely never will.

They have NO sense of humor about this and take their job REALLY seriously.

Well I guess they'll be coming after me then because a while ago (before Hitlery left the race) I got a call asking to vote for the milinjohn. I said 'DON'T YOU EVER CALL HERE AGAIN HE'S A NAZI SYMPATHIZER!' :D
They never called again. I wonder why :shr:

Dustmusher and TXWriter, I'll admit, I'm completely confused by your posts. I didn't mean to stir up trouble. I didn't realize there was another Lufkin poster besides myself. This was totally not the intent of my post. I posted this simply because I found it disturbing that Secret Service would go after a woman simply because she spoke out against Obama. Especially since Obama isn't even president yet. I didn't post this because of any Lufkin connection with another member. :shr:

Bearing false witness is gaining in popularity because people have no morals, no honor.

Amaryllis --

A few years ago there were two posters from Lufkin who, during one of TB2K's notorious board wars left in a huff and blaze of 'glory'.

The story you posted was a VERY good catch and a big dot on what may come, my comment was because the first thought that came to me when I read that the 'citizen' may have made a comment which might - if accurate - have given the USSS heartburn was, "Sure sounds like ****."

The possibility something untoward was said is not unlike the history of the ex-member as is the defense of "but I never meant anything like that".

Thank you for catchig this article and reminding me to NOT speak my mind when the Obamamessiah Stooges talk to me.

Over the years I have know a number of active and retired USSS agents. Some of them were OK and some were dour, egotistical, know-it-alls. they have a job that most people would never touch, that of being willing to take a bullet for the Principle in their protection.

One thing that a person should never do is say anything that may be construed to be threatening about a dignitary that they are responsible for.

They hsve a thsnkless job that I do not envy and would never be interested in. Over the years I have worked with the Cal State security detail for an impending visit by the then govornor Ronald Reagan. Also with the advance detail arranging a visit by President Nixon. I cannot discuss the detailed scrutiny the advance teams use but let your imagination go all out.

One of my most pleaasant afternoons was spent with the SAIC of the local USSS office at the firing range. It was at the SF County Jail No. 2 in San Mateo County. We fired our Uzi, 9mm SMG's at the silhouette targets designed by the USSS. what made it more interesting was that about 10 prisoners were working in the truck garden located a few yards from our government cars in a parking lot.

The lady from Texas will certainly be in a data base for sometime, if not forevermore. Do not let your lips get you in trouble by saying something that may be misconstrued by the wrong people.

:) That's okay.

The other member is the first one I thought of when I read the title. :lkick:

No offense intended. She can speak her mind, and I like that.

Some nasty ass little panty twister who sicked the Secret Service on some honest woman who made a truthful comment that in no way was a threat, however, should be billed for all the time and trouble she has caused the government and should have libel and harassment charges brought against her. (substitute him if by chance it wasn't a whiny girl)

I finally figured all this out about the poster from Lufkin you all are referring to. I knew there was a problem, and that she was banned. I swear to God that I don't know any more about why she was banned. I just as soon not know. The lady in the article is not that poster, and that poster was honestly the farthest thing from my mind when I posted this.

NOT to mention that, whenever a POTUS comes to Lufkin she WILL be interviewed by the advance people with USSS for at LEAST the next 10 years....or where ever she moves to.

Great, so now the First Amendment means nothing as well, and we had best self-censor so that we don't offend--somebody, anybody. All it takes is one non-documented complaint from a hardly disinterested source and it's off to the database for you, citizen.

I guess if anyone around here pisses me off, I'll just call up and say that they said something nasty about Comrade Obama. That ought to get them off my back for a while.

This happened in Wichita during the Klinton administration.

A young man was overheard in a cafe talking about his new hunting rifle and he "suggested" that he sight it in on the POTUS.

He got a visit from the SS (as he should). I think he served some time.

Be Well

may all be well
A friend in Texas sent me this:

On Wednesday the 1st of October I received a call on my cell while in the car with my husband. It was a woman who identified herself as calling from the Obama Campaign. The phone # she called from was 903-798-6020 which lists as "Obama Volunteers of Texarkana" ( Texas ).

She asked if I was an Obama supporter to which I replied:

"No, I don't support him, your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the State Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time." I hung up.

Thursday, October 2, I answered the front door to find the Secret Service. Immediately I thought of the call and was furious that apparently you are not allowed to call Obama a Socialist without the Secret Service coming to investigate. Instead, they asked me about the following comment, relayed by the Obama Volunteer of Texarkana who called me, unsolicited on my cell phone:

"I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor."
My husband laughed and told them "No, she called him a socialist but she never said a word about him dying." I gave them my actual quote. The woman asked insolently "Oh? Well why would she make that up?"
I replied that I supposed she wasn't happy about what I said about her candidate and the Agent said "That's right, you were rude!" The last time I checked being rude wasn't a crime in America .

Luckily the big file they had gathered on me didn't indicate mental instability or a past life of stalking/crime, however they did want to know how I felt about Obama. That was my limit. I told the Agent in no uncertain terms that my thoughts were not pertinent to their investigation, that this was America and the last time I checked I was allowed to think whatever I wanted without being questioned by the Secret Service. In fact, even if I had said what she claimed, that isn't a threat. I told them (again) and my husband verified that the statement reported by Obama's volunteer was a lie. I asked them if there was a tape of the call and they said no. I said, "So on the word of a ticked off Obama supporter you are on my porch with no other evidence and you want to question me about my THOUGHTS!?"
They informed me that there was no evidence she was an Obama supporter…someone calling from his campaign…are you kidding?

I was not allowed to know the name of my accuser at which point they informed me that it wasn't like I was in a court of law, YET, as if this was a good thing. I recognized this as a veiled threat. I told them I would happily go to court since I did nothing wrong and at least then my accuser would have to face me rather than sending the thought police to my house.
They then said they were trying to do me a favor, that they came to me first before "embarrassing you by going to all your neighbors and family", another threat? I told them to be my guest and talk to whomever they wanted but they weren't going to investigate my thoughts on my porch.

They also informed me that it would be easier if the next time a supporter calls me I just say "Yeah sure count me in, or just hang up" apparently so she won't get her undies in a bundle and give them more useless trips. Yeah right. I said "Look, someone calls me unsolicited on my cell phone to ask me to support their candidate and I can't tell them why I don't?" I said I was sorry they made a wasted trip but if they had a problem with some made up lie they needed to go talk to her about it because it wasn't my fault they had to drive from Houston for nothing.

At one point I went inside and got a notepad to record their badge numbers and they refused to show me their badges. They had done the quick flip when they arrived. I asked for a card and the female Agent refused to give me one stating "You're not going to get a card." The male Agent gave me a card and told me I could contact Houston with any questions.
The fact that the volunteer lied, the fact that the Secret Service came to my house to question me about my thoughts and feelings and threaten to embarrass me to my neighbors and go to court if I didn't cooperate is not really the tragedy here. Because that girl on the phone doesn't have the pull to send the Secret Service to my home. Someone high in the ranks of a campaign working for a man who may be the next President of the United States of America felt comfortable bringing the force of the Federal Government to bear on a private citizen on nothing but the word of a partisan volunteer.
I want to file a counter complaint that false charges were made, that a false report was given to a peace officer. The Secret Service told me I cannot because they will protect the identity of the complainant. I also want the file they have on me destroyed and I want to know that my phone isn't tapped, etcetera. I am hearing a lot of "Out of my Jurisdiction".
Do I also hear jackboots?

Just crazy how ugly politics has gotten, if someone did say that, then they are deranged, if someone made that up, then they are just as sick.

You know of course the NO CALL law does not pertain to political calls of this type and that call you received was perfectly legal.

ETA: I re-read your post and I see you do.
