HEALTH We Got The Flu From Hell

My husband and I have this awful flu that makes you cough and cough....it's been six days for me and he's on his fourth day. I have started coughing a slight amount of blood...just little flecks of it. I have so many coughing spasms and there is so much crud in my lungs that I can't keep from coughing. Does anyone have a good natural remedy for this that you could recommend.

I'm sorry you are sick. I recommend lots of hot water. Flavor it for variety with tea, lemmon, whiskey. Inhale steam. It will run its course.

I am just getting over something exactly like that.

See a doc, especially if you have a fever. If it is pneumonia it can be very dangerous. Thats what I did and I am taking an antibiotic.

If you've got specks of blood in your phlegm, I suggest you see a doctor sooner rather than later...

Oil of oregano cut with olive oil. Just a few drops of oregano.
Or elderberry tincture. Or both if it's that bad. Also the steam.
And yes, get to a dr. just in case. Especially if you are coughing up blood.

apple cider vinegar tea with ginseng cut up and put into it.....

it tastes like crap but will kill pretty much anything that is ailing your throat

We use it when the kids bring home the strep or any other flu like symptoms. Kills it overnight.

Make a tea of dried thyme leaves in hot water and flavor with plenty of honey to clear your chest. I drank this along with tea made from fresh sliced ginger root, and raw garlic on buttered bread three times a day for three days, and had the shortest cold ever. FYI, elderberry extract gave me the worst case of sinus mucus I'd ever had while I was trying to treat a cold November last year, and that was even while taking turmeric with pepper to counteract the effects. I won't be using it again.

Also the BEST thing I have found for killing off a bad cough is Fisherman's Friend Cough drops.. I had a bug like that years and years ago.. after 2 days of the drops it stopped me from coughing 100%

I thought it was BS but they work wonders.

That same thing is going on around here. My neighbor and her son both had it bad, then I caught it. She said everyone she knows has it, but they are the only people I saw with it. My lungs hurt BAD and then I would cough and cough and cough. I finally got rid of it: I was spraying colliodial silver into my mouth while taking a breath, making sure some went into the lungs. Mine didnt last near as long as the neighbors did. Its been over 2 weeks and she is STILL coughing.

Get checked out by the doc.

I had a cough like that and was treated for bronchitis for a couple of weeks before being diagnosed with Whooping Cough. (And that was a stroke of luck....the doc on call happened to be from India, and recognized it right away)

The doctor recommendation cannot be stressed enough. My Mom thought she had the flu and it's full blown pneumonia. My Dad started getting very ill today with flu like symptoms. I'd like to say that it's started early this year but our weather seems to be running ahead of schedule as well so maybe it's right on time when you think about it.

In addition to whatever else you do, including getting seen by a doc, is this home treatment method that works wonders and feels very relieving.

Fomentation

Get a good sized bowl with very hot water, and add a few drops of essential oils - I use Eucalyptus, Basil, Camphor, sometimes Lavender, others work too, like Spruce, Pine or Fir. A few drops.

Get two or three washcloths or hand towels, and rubber gloves. Have the other person sit without a shirt but with a wool blanket wrapped around them.

Soak the towels/washcloths in the bowl and wring one out at a time, so it is saturated but NOT dripping, and place it on the person's upper back. As soon as it cools down a little, replace it, and alternate with placing on the chest. Do this until the water cools down to just warm. The heat from the towels should feel very hot but tolerable and comfortable, NOT burning hot. As you place the hot towels on, then wrap the person in the wool blanket, and they can also breathe the steam. You can refill with more very hot water as needed or add a few more drops of essential oils as they are very volatile.

If you also have a hot foot bath with the same oils while they get the fomentation, it's really good.

This treatment will relieve congestion in the lungs and feels really good, it's best for one person to do it to another. If you're both sick you can take turns. It should be done a couple of times a day.

That sounds soothing! I'll have to pick up some of the essential oils for the winter..

Great Great Grandma!
I agree that coughing up blood is cause to see a doctor.

I read this thread with interest since I've had a bad hacking cough for a few weeks now. Around here we call it "the crud". Coughing up phlegm, coughing so hard I almost toss cookies and it's hard to breath. It's worst at night and early morning, but sometimes gets bad during the day too. People have been telling me that it usually lasts about 3 months! :shkr:

For the past 3 days I've been dehydrating onions. It suddenly dawned on me that I can breath better and haven't been coughing as much. Today I didn't dry onions, and the cough is back. I may go into business dehydrating onions for the next 3 months. :lkick:

I had this exact same thing a few weeks back, it is going around something fierce.

I did lots of hot tea with honey to soothe the throat & stop the cough. In my case what really knocked it out was mega doses of colloidal silver and mega doses of vitamin C. Tylenol or Advil for the owchie throat & chest. I have some residual gunk I'm still coughing up on occasion but it's nothing like it was- my chest no longer hurts & no more fever.

Yep, I got it last weekend. Felt ick and then Monday couldn't stop coughing. Then came a fever. Then DH got sick. Took bunches of Nyquil and Cough Syrup and slept tons.

Finally it got so bad we went to the Doctor. We both have pneumonia. Taking Codeine cough syrup and antibiotics. Constant coughing, no energy and for some reason I'm really ticked off - don't know why.

DH took 1/2 day last Wed off and stayed out Thurs and Fri because he didn't want anyone else to get it.

When he called work yesterday and told them he was being treated for pneumonia, they didn't really care. So he dragged himself in there yesterday and is there right now. I can't believe if he doesn't work he might get tossed.

Gawd...

I really suggest you get to a doctor if your coughing up gunk. You really don't want to be where we are right now.

Oh my gosh,.. I had that cough for weeks and weeks. I didn't think I'd ever get over it ! Keeping vicks smeared on my chest with a hand towel over it all night seemed to help but it wasn't fun at all. Then right when I got over it and my defences were still down my daughter came home with a bad case of strep ! Guess what? Yep...slapped down again with strep. We're both still on antibiotics. It has NOT been fun !! I hope everyone gets well. I'll pray for us all.

When I was grinding my dried cayenne peppers last week my sinuses cleared up. A side benefit of home food preservation.

I forgot to say that all it was was a bad cough. No plegm, no nothing coming up, just a bad cough. No fever either.

yup that is exactly how it starts. It's almost a dry hacking cough, coughing fits and they are scary. I've had this for 6+ weeks now. It wasnt' so bad that I needed antibiotics (and I refuse to take them anyway.) It never got so bad that I thought I needed to go to a doctor.,,just that dammed cough. The first week it was bad dry coughing. It loosens up as time goes on. You need to get that started by taking some type of expectorant for the mucus.

My friend was just here visiting and she had it too. When she flew back home she went straight to the doctor because she was coughing up specs of blood and they told her she had bronchitis and her throat was raw from coughing (hence the blood) They said that would abate after taking the anti-biotics.

She had a severe reaction to the antibiotics and the prednisone. So she is back to letting it run it's course.

Thanks everyone...I'm going to try a lot of the remedies. I can't take antibiotics as they make me even sicker. I sure hope it's not six weeks in length. I wonder who created this one!

If you are coughing that bad and it looks really junky with blood or it's yellow/green colored, go to the doctor. I went yesterday and didn't think I was that bad, but the doc wanted to put me in the hospital right then and there. I have pneumonia from it. Ugh. im so tired right now it's hard to type. but go to the doc...don't let it get bad like I did.

heres one remedy that may scare some people. but our family has been using it for years with good results .. and NEVER any negative ones.

use 3% hydrogen peroxide in a 'nasal inhaler' or any type of spray mister that will make the mist very fine. inhale 5-10 lungfulls of the mist several times per day. h202 will immediately release beneficial oxygen to your lungs, you may even feel a little woozy from the o2. but oxygen is an enemy to most harmful bacteria/viri/fungi and will speed up your recovery .. almost no matter what you have.

for more severe flu's you'll need to get 30% (concentrated) hyd per, and take it orally by mixing anywhere from 5-25 drops in a glass of juice or water. best taken on an empty stomach .. and never forget to dilute first!

I used MMS to nuke my last flu bug.

Unfortunately, I didn't try it earlier on in the attack, rather I got so sick of coughing up crap after a month of misery and decided to give it a go.

Pretty much all symtoms were completely gone within a week of treatment.

I dunno if it'll whack it from the get go, but it will definitely be my first line of resistance if I ever get it again.

Just be very careful...I noticed this morning that one of the news stations was running a ticker tape about the flu and staph (MRSA) combination illness...and saying how the numbers of cases had increased last year and they expect to see more this year.

So be very cautious especially if you are seeing flecks of blood...not to scare anyone but you can't really take chances with these things now. I hope you feel better soon~...blessings T

From these posts, it looks like the "crud" has hit everywhere from CA to Boston and down to Louisiana! I haven't heard about it here in Virginia, but will be more careful now.

Does anyone have any recommendations to PREVENT it? Other than the flu shot?

Hope y'all get to feeling better really quick!

Woozy? Sounds like hyperventilating to me. Not so sure about the wisdom of adding more fluid to already overloaded lungs, either.

What is MMS?

"Miricle Mineral Supplement"

There has been a great deal of discussion on this board regarding success stories and, of course, warnings and concerns regarding usage from some dubious members.

Several of us have given it a try and many of us had incredible success with it, with no consequence or side effects as those "concerned" individuals had feared.

What it consists of is a simple, hand mixed solution of stabilized Sodium Chlorite (might be chlorate, I can't remember exactly) (not Chloride, as table salt) and Citric Acid. When mixed (for 3 minutes or so) the compound rapidly changes into Chlorine Dioxide, which breaks down rapidly releasing the Chlorine and O2, which is lethal to microbes, pathogens, and unhealthy cells.

It's quite a hammer and doesn't last long, but can have pretty dramatic results, in my experience.

It should not be taken with vitamin C, and should never be mixed with tap water. You don't want it bonding with the wrong stuff or it can be bad.

You want to use a cup or so of pure, distilled water.

It's easy to make, with the kit.

1.) Mix 1 drop MMS (Sodium Chlorite) to every 5 drops Citric Acid
2.) Let sit in clean glass for 3 minutes
3.) Mix with pure distilled water.
4.) Plug your nose and drink.

Alone, the ingredients smell like nothing, but as soon as you mix them it will start smelling like a swimming pool. Plugging your nose blocks the chlorine taste, but you can still taste the sour of the citric acid a little.

If you have a sensitive stomach to acidic food, you should use a little more water so it doesn't cause any discomfort.

I had no ill side effects, or discomfort, though some claim to experience some diarrhea followed by a burst of energy.

One thing I noticed is that when I was taking it regularly, I slept like a log. I also tended to sleep longer than usual, but I felt good in the morning. A few times I did notice somewhat of an increase in energy, too.

Thank God for the Indian doctor. At the house where I work (with 30 Health Care Workers looking after 12 people with severe developmental disabilities), about one third have already had to skip work due to being affected by the current "virus" that's making its rounds. So, far, I haven't had to succomb (although I increased my intake of Vitamin C and am using the non-drowsy allergy conrol med to handle the symptoms of my "cold").

I WILL NOT be getting a flu shot! The year I did that (two seasons ago), later on, I got the worst case of the flu I had ever contracted, so it didn't help.

Go to the Doc

But,

You need vitamin D-3 probably in the thousands of units 2K at least.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you have not had a lot of exposure to sunlight or if you do you have been using a paba based sun block.

A lot of excellent advice on this thread but get eh D-3.
