ASTEROID 2008 TC3: A small, newly-discovered asteroid named 2008 TC3 is approaching Earth and chances are good that it will hit. Steve Chesley of JPL estimates that atmospheric entry will occur on Oct 7th at 0246 UTC over northern Sudan [ref]. Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock poses no threat to the ground, but it should create a spectacular fireball, releasing about a kiloton of energy as it disintegrates and explodes in the atmosphere. Stay tuned for updates.

oh great... more doom for October 7th!

Or, just a really cool light show?

I'm sure there are some, especially in the M.E. and Sudan, who will see this as a great sign of the times.

My immediate thought were the scriptural references to balls of fire in the sky... :shkr::shkr:

Space rock

It will cross Earth’s atmosphere just in few hours

For the first time, astronomers have found an object on a certain collision course with Earth. Fortunately, it is so small it is not expected to cause any damage, burning up in the atmosphere somewhere above northern Sudan in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. It may, however, produce a brilliant 'shooting star'.

The space rock, dubbed 8TA9D69, was first spotted on Monday in a survey by the Mt Lemmon Observatory near Tucson, Arizona.

The meteor it produces is likely to be spectacular.

I've decided that the ultimate doomer date of 12/21/12 has nothing on tomorrow. :shkr:

I hope the muzzies don't think we are nuking them and use it as an excuse for full fledged jihad. :bhmo:

Cool! I hope the meteorite hunters can get there fast & get some pieces!

Edit to add that I hope it doesn't fall on anybody or any buildings.

October 6, 2008

A very tiny asteroid, not much more than 10 feet across, will enter Earth’s atmosphere over Sudan in Africa tonight, October 6-7, 2008, near 2:46 Greenwich Mean Time. Most likely it will burn up before hitting the ground, but it could produce a spectacular fireball, or bolide, in the night sky equivalent to the explosion of about a kiloton of TNT.

These are the assessments of astronomers Andrea Milani of NEODyS in Italy and Steve Chesley (Jet Propulsion Laboratory). [B/ They are concerned that eyewitnesses might misinterpret the event as some type of hostile military action. Says Milani,[/URL][/B] “The earlier the public worldwide is aware that this is a natural phenomenon, which involves no risk, the better.”

The first observatory to capture images of 2008 TC3 (as it’s now designated) were Richard Kowalski and colleagues of Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona, about 12 hours ago. Confirming measurements were quickly secured by amateur astronomer James McGaha at Sabino Canyon Observatory near Tucson, and then by Gordon Garrad and others at Australia’s Siding Spring Observatory and also Christopher Jacques and E. Pimentel using the Global Rent-a-Scope site in Moorook, near Melbourne.

First to point out that the incoming object was heading right for a collision with Earth’s atmosphere was Bill Gray of Project Pluto, in a post earlier today to the Minor Planet Mailing List. Canadian amateur Andrew Lowe has independently calculated the object’s point of entry to be over Sudan.

The object’s entry might be visible as far north as southern Europe and the Middle East. Its location in the sky, however, is completely dependent on an observer’s geographic location. As further details become known, be sure to look at the online version of this AstroAlert at SkyandTelescope.com/AstroAlert for possible updates.

Maybe it will veer off course just enough to burn up over Iran and it won't be one kiloton but ten. Just enough to produce an EMP effect and put that part of the worlds lights out for a while.

Or...maybe it is disinfo to cover for an attack that is about to commence.

Yikes!
I forgot my DS birthday is tomorrow!

That is more important than a market crash, an asteroid, earthquakes, blood red moon......:shr:

Now...what can I get him? :hmm: I don't think he would understand the value of 50 cases of TP....

Wonder what would happen if the rock was to miss Sudan and landed on that shipload of pirates and its "death cargo" in Somalia?

A prep item that he doesn't realize is a prep item, like a cellphone with press-to-talk (walkie-talkie), a new chainsaw, rifle and ammo, a small fridge for his space (these are great for generators!) stocked with his favorite beverages, etc.

If they know that much they should know it's approximate impact region. Anything on that? Might be a good night to do some star gazing depending on where you are located on the geo. I would look it up myself but I'm somewhat frazzled today from <having to deal with BS>.

Humm the web bots have spoken about a "military failure to understand the situation" as leading to some event or incident but it was put on the timeline for next week. They are still showing this for Oct 15th

October 7th

I have resisted posting the following, as it is a vanity post.

Tomorrow is my birthday, I will be 43. I was the subject of a closed adoption as a child in Nevada. Last November I was strongly compelled to find my birth relatives which required throwing down significant cash. (VERY unusual behavior or me, and after all this time, it was literally like a compulsion that I had to find out that year) All that was happy, more to the story etc. but with all the portentous comments about that date, add to it, this is the first birthday of my life that I know who my mother and father are. Just a vain post about another reason tomorrow is a significant date. I hope the word does not end tomorrow!

It's way too early (in fact, it may be impossible, period...) to plot an absolute track of the inbound asteroid. But, if it lasts long enough, it could conceivably cross Israel/Jerusalem...

Just a little note of interest for the Biblically minded... just have to wait and see...

TheSearcher

Are you sure about that?
Is this the first in a line of rocka headed our way?:shkr:

If we knew the trajectory, then any "string of pearls" might be interesting to deduce... As in, where does Damascus lie in line with Sudan? :shkr:

I just read 'The Ezekiel Option' by Joel Rosenberg, it makes me think funny things about this story.

I can just see it hitting the golden dome of the mosque sitting on the temple mount.

ok, stupid question.

How do you tell a 10 foot diameter asteroid is comming straight at you? With an impact time and location?

Looks like it's gonna be a clear night. Popcorn and lawn chair anybody?

lojoma, that is cool! I found Lynn's birth mother and it is so important to know the story of one's birth. What you posted is not vanity at all.

This has been quite the exciting 7th wedding anniversary today for Dancingsloth and I...who needs panic sex when you've got astral bodies??
