FOOD Hoja santa (Mexican pepperleaf)

I finally found out the correct name for the plant that I got from Al the butcher. He kept telling me it was Paulo Santo, but I never found it using that name. I did eventually find out that it's Mexican pepperleaf thanks to the help of the fine folks here on TB2K. But tonight I was watching a show about Peak Oil and one of the people on there had the same plant and used the correct name. I turned on captioning to be sure of the spelling and started searching. Turns out the captioning left off the silent "H" but I found the plant anyway!

So the "real" name is Hoja santa or "sacred leaf."

The little plant that I was given is doing well in a temporary pot under the shade trees out front. It didn't like the full afternoon sun and would wilt, but he's happy now! Don't know if any more leaves will grow this year, but I'll transplant it soon and be ready to protect it from frost this winter.

Neat plant!
