WTF?!? whole house just shook

WTF?
East Texas, near the Louisiana line, off I-20, whole house just shook, all glass rattled, computer knocked offline.
But no *sound*.
Checked the roof for falling tree limbs, nothing.
Wondered if a support beam had snapped, nope.
Nothing hit the house, and the same shock wave hit my husband's workplace a block away.
Sound travels very well around here, like from thunder or explosions, but this time there was NO noise.
Just felt like the house just *bounced*.

Any seismic activity nearby?
I thought we were out of the New Madrid fault zone here.

I heard on the radio this morning that a man in Marshall was burned pretty badly by a natural gas explosion while working. That was yesterday morning. If the fire didn't completely burn out yesterday, I wonder if it could be somehow related? :shr:

You're correct, Amaryillis, but that was yesterday.
I called our local paper, but they are over 1/2 mile away and in a masonry building, and didn't feel it, but they are checking it out too.

Richard, that's kind of what I had narrowed it down to, but no reports of anything seismic anywhere nearby.

Seriously, I thought it was just this old house; 1895, HUGE and built of wood, but they felt it a block and a half away at my husband's work place as well, and that is a masonry structure auto repair place.

We *are* just up the block from the train station, but there should have been a corresponding *sound* if it had to do with trains banging around.

How weird, and a bit unnerving.
Silent shock wave.

My friend's house about 1 1/2 miles away, also here in town, also felt it.
Another old wood Victorian house.
She thought something had collapsed in her attic, but no.

So this went farther than just my immediate neighborhood, apparently.

Yes, we are about 40 some odd miles from Barksdale AFB, but generally sonic booms are accompanied by a *noise*, like abrupt loud thunder.

This was silent, except for the house rattling.

Several years ago they were firing some kind of shells at a base over 50 miles away. We didn't hear anything but did feel some minor tremors. Wonder if Barksdale has been practicing with something?

Maybe that's it, Knell, in which case we will never find out for sure.

Called my friend 6 miles out in the country, she felt it too.

Whatever it was, it was a big one.

I'm just outside of Texarkana, and I've been told by long-time residents that there is a bombing range somewhere south of me...down towards Barksdale...so that could be it. Bombing practice with live ammo. If you're far enough away, you won't hear it, but will feel the ground shake.
