yes, I'm paying attention. I'm a recent Oregonian and have never experienced an earthquake. but I'm in an Rv, so I might not notice it. We visit the coast every couple of months and the tsunami signs are kind of scary for me. Not many roads away from the area. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Yup,

I'm in Oregon City, a few miles south of Portland. The alarming thing is that since July 15th there have been a series of quakes all at the same depth, same approximate location, and they've been getting progressively larger, not smaller. We're due for a big one anytime, and no way is Oregon prepared. That area of the ocean is smack on the Juan De Fuca plate, as far as I can tell.

Be Well

may all be well
I've been trying to pay attention - here and elsewhere, I live in SW OR about 40 miles from the coast, longer by road - other side of Coast Range.

Anyone in OR actually feel these quakes? They look to be about 3 or 400 miles off the coast?

Yes, I've been noticing, too. They had tapered off for a bit, but now they've started up again.

A friend of mine was working on a research vessel for the Univ of Oregon, investigating earthquake swarms (her words, not mine... I have no idea what they are...) She sent me a really informative email. But, unfortunately I didn't save it... But, as far as I know, the ship is still out there.

Check your "trash" folder and your recycle bin, maybe you still have the email. I would be interested in knowing what it said!

It is said that the PNW is like Southern California... they know that soon the "Big One" is coming... in the PNW case, it's underground EQ/ huge tsunami afteraffect... then add those 'pesky' volcanoes like St. Helens and Ranier which should be 'warming up' soon, like all the rest.

4 update value... As I look at the world map vs North AMerica... it seeems from Latin America around the 'Ring of Fire' to Siberian Russia/northern Japan... that the rest of the world is bigger hits but spread out compared to the Alaska/West Coast/Puerto Rican staccato hits.... Perhaps a different way to relieve stress... or just the difference in plate movement? :shr:

Here's a map from usgs. You can see the recent ones in South Cal, not sure if the 5.4 is there yet or not. Oregon seems quiet by comparison... looks like bigger activity is offshore except for the Washington/Canada area of PNW... or maybe it's just 'warming up' too?

I live in north eastern WA. When I lived in a trailer that still had the tires on it, I use to feel quakes that happened 1200 miles away in California regularly. Plant hangers would sway, windows would rattle. This happened at the same time earthquakes were reported to have happened.

A while back my dad was asked to move some heavy equipment from here to Colorado. He said he wouldn't unless he knew what he was moving. He was told it was seismology equipment. Being the friendly feller he is, he found out that we are sitting on a direct fault that shoots off of the San Andreas in some fashion. That explains the rumbles I felt. We've had a few little shakers but nothing big in recent history.

There was a big quake in the 1800's in the Okanagan that killed some Indians and changed the course of rivers, it was apparently quite a large one.

Mt. Rainier isn't the only active volcano near Seattle, Mt. Baker smokes like a chimney. I'm sure there are others, there are hot springs all around Seattle I hear, a good indicator of volcanic activity nearby.

People over the hill (the Cascade Mountains) from Seattle joke about having ocean front property soon. I'd hate to see it, the population on the coast is huge.
