Man Accidentally Kills Pregnant Wife While Cleaning Gun
Tuesday, July 08, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. — A pregnant woman and her unborn child have died in central Florida after being accidentally shot by the woman's husband, authorities said.

Yailen Abreu, 23, and the fetus died Tuesday at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Orange County sheriff's officials said Abreu was hit in the stomach while her husband was cleaning his gun late Monday at their Orlando-area home. She was six months pregnant.

The bullet struck 39-year-old Enio Abreu in the hand before hitting in his wife, authorities said.

I've seen lots of stories over the years of guns going off accidently, meaning that the person that did it did not mean to do this. It was an accident.

Many children have done this and killed a friend or sibling. It was definitely accidental.

Bet'cha booze was a major factor and stupidity the minor factor.

Sad.....

I recall my father cleaning a pistol that went off. He had been drinking. Luckily it just blew a hole in the floor next to his foot. All 5 of us children were in the room. Mother, well, she was not too pleased, believe me.

One does not clean a loaded gun. One UNLOADS the gun, makes sure it's safe, and THEN cleans it. If one is too stupid to know that, one is too stupid to be allowed to own firearms.

Bear in mind this was reported by a journalist who probably believes in the existence of bolt-action fully automatic sniper rifles, as was reported recently. That reporter doesn't know about clearing a weapon, figures they're all just dribbling bullets out of every orofice. Far as the reporter can tell, the guy was cleaning his weapon and it went off.

The story doesn't mention alcohol, maybe was, maybe wasn't. Anyone who touches a weapon while drinking is definitely stupid to start with. Regardless, this guy was an idiot for starters just for letting the thing point at his wife, whether or not he thought it was loaded. He was an idiot squared for not knowing whether it was loaded.

If the guy shot himself in the hand first before the bullet hit his wife it probably was accidental. Darwin claims another victim but unfortunately the dumb one wasn't the one that was dispatched. Always consider all weapons as loaded until you check and these sorts of things won't happen.

Allowed?!? By whom?

I understand what you're trying to say here, but the word "allowed" shouldn't have been included.

As long as there have been stupid people, there have been stupid accidents. Stupidity always finds a way to maim and kill others including the stupid one, whether that be with cars, bicycles, horses, water . . . ad infinitum.

My position on this is, "here is one more example of how stupidity kills others on a daily basis".

Very sad. :shk:

Male Bovine Manure. If you put your finger on the trigger and pull it, it isn't an accident. Guns don't just "go off". There is no such thing as an accidental discharge. That's a cop out.

We do not have accidents with guns, BECAUSE PEOPLE CAN GET KILLED. We always, ALWAYS, follow Col. Cooper's 4 rules:

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
Rule III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT

If you follow these rules, even an ND won't get anyone hurt, except their pride and their hearing. My children can recite these rules on command and in any order I demand. If you're around guns, you learn these, live these and internalize them so that they are second nature. it should take an act of will to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger.

Accidents can happen to anyone. Knowing this when I clean guns, I am in the basement, at a workbench, focusing all of my attention on the task. Trying to watch TV or chit chat is a bad idea.

But you DO make sure the pipe is clear, right?

an accidental discharge is like accidentally hitting someone with your car while driving the wrong way on the interstate...you may not have intended to do it, but it never would have happened if you hadn't put yourself in the position in the first place.

Ok, not taking either side here, but. But, if I am sitting at a table with my gun in hand with the intent of cleaning it and it goes off, it, 'discharged while I was cleaning it'. The whole process, from getting the gun, clear through to putting it away after I'm finished, is, for me, 'cleaning the gun'. Think about it...What's the very first step you should take in 'cleaning a gun'? Empty the thing of bullets. Maybe that was the step he was in when it fired. Therefore, he *was* 'cleaning it', when it went off.

Shortly after I returned from VN I was at a party one night...

The guy having the little get together had a son about four or five years old. I was sitting in a chair when this little sht-head walked over to me and pointed a military 1911 .45 right at me!

I grabbed it away from the kid before he could even blink! The kid's father (the guy having the party) said, "Oh, don't worry, it's not loaded".

Stupid...I've known some friends growing up that got killed with unloaded guns. Happens all the time.
