HPV Vaccine Blamed for Teen's Paralysis
Tuesday , July 08, 2008

Gardasil certainly made headlines in 2006 when the Food and Drug Administration approved it as a vaccine against four strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer.

HPV can be transmitted sexually, so many parents decided to give the vaccination to their teenaged daughters.

Now, Gardasil is making headlines again. This time, the drug’s manufacturer is under scrutiny as the vaccine’s recipients are complaining of ill side effects.

There have been more than 78,000 complaints about Gardasil, New England Cable News reported Tuesday.

Complaints have included nausea, blood clots, genital warts, paralysis and even death.

The Centers for Disease Control said the deaths are not linked to Gardasil.

Merck is standing by its product, insisting it is safe.

“I think of all the vaccines out there, this has been thoroughly tested prior to release,” said Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor of FOXNews.com. “This is a vaccine that helps protect women from a very deadly disease. Therefore the benefits fully outweigh any side effect that has been found so far.

"However, I do believe that with any medication, constant surveillance of complications need to be monitored aggressively and in extreme cases, like this one, thorough investigations are necessary.”

The family of one teenager – who is only going by the name of Jenny – told CBS News Monday that their daughter was healthy until 15 months ago when she received the third installment of the vaccine.

Jenny’s parents said it was soon after that final shot that Jenny began to experience signs of degenerative muscle disease, and she is now almost completely paralyzed.

“There may be a link. But, there is no medical consensus on whether this hypothesis is stronger than other possible explanations,” said the parents of Jenny, 13, who lives in Northern California.

“Based on the facts we’ve received, the information does not suggest that this event was casually associated with vaccination.”

Since the drug was approved, eight million females have received the vaccination.

Alvarez also noted that vaccines respond differently to the each individual’s immune system.

I told DD's doctor she flat out wasn't getting it and he didn't say one word to try to convince me otherwise.

Isnt hpv one of those that have become HERVs, a part of our DNA? and doesnt HPV hide in the nervous system? Perhaps we are vaccinating some people against it when theyre already infected and maybe even fought it off, or even worse, people might have parts of it floating in their system already passed in their dna... which in effect either case we would be vaccinating the body against parts of itself.

I am anti-Gardisil. How could Gardisil give someone genital warts? I mean, really. Someone's not being honest here.

Judicial Watch Uncovers Shocking New FDA Documents

July 3, 2008, From the Desk of Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton: Judicial Watch Uncovers Shocking New FDA Documents Related to Gardasil

Those of you who regularly read this column know that Judicial Watch has taken the lead in exposing the ugly truth about the dangerous side effects associated with Gardasil, the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV) currently being administered to young girls.

Well this week, we released a special report based on new "adverse event reports" and other information obtained from the FDA under the Freedom of Information Act. These reports document 10 reported deaths since September, 2007. (The total number of death reports is at least 18 and as many as 20.) The FDA also produced 140 "serious" reports (27 of which were categorized as "life threatening"), 10 spontaneous abortions and six cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome - all since January 2008.

Here are a few excerpts from the documents we uncovered. The rest can be read in our report. (Warning: These descriptions get very graphic.)

Information has been received...concerning a 20 year old female with no medical history reported, who on 01-APR-2008 was vaccinated with a dose of Gardasil....The patient died four days after...patient sought unspecified medical attention. An autopsy was performed which ruled out suicide and anything suspicious. The cause of death is currently unknown. VAERS ID: 310262-1 (D)

Cold sweat, Fall, Foaming at mouth, Grand mal convulsion, Immediate post-injection reaction. . .Pt [patient, 14-year-old female] received vaccine, took 6 steps, fell to the ground unconscious and had a 60 sec grand mal seizure then regained consciousness. [Blood pressure] after seizure 60/40 pale clammy skin. [Patient] had bit her tongue and had foam around her mouth. VAERS ID: 305259-1 (S)

Information has been received from a physician concerning a female patient who on an unknown date was vaccinated with a dose of Gardasil. Subsequently, the patient experienced a coma and is now paralyzed. At the time of this report, the patient's outcome was unknown. VAERS ID: 303188-1

Would you allow your daughter to have this vaccine when these are the potential consequences? I know I wouldn't. If Merck has its way, however, we might not have much of a choice. Merck had been lobbying to have the vaccine mandated for young girls and some politicians seemed willing to oblige.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already recommended that 11 and 12-year-old girls begin receiving the vaccine as part of school vaccination efforts. (Following the CDC's lead, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed an executive order last year mandating the vaccine for 6th grade girls. Parent groups fought the mandate and the mandate was rescinded.)

Moreover, according to a recent article in The Washington Post, Merck plans to lobby the FDA to approve the vaccination for young boys as well. (Right now, the vaccination is approved for girls/young women from ages 9 to 26. Just last week, the FDA rejected Merck's attempt to expand the use of the vaccination for women 27 and older. Merck plans to reapply.)

These developments make our report all the more relevant. Read it for free by clicking here, http://www.judicialwatch.org/story/2008/may/judicial-watch-investigates-side-effects-hpv-vaccine and then be sure to send the link to your friends, family members and colleagues.

I'm not aware of any evidence that HPV is an ERV. In fact, HPV is a DNA virus, so it can't be a retrovirus.

Vaccinating someone who already is infected is not harmful. Either they have been infected long enough to build memory lymphocytes and the vaccine will just act as a booster, or they have been recently infected and the immune response is already in progress, in which case the vaccine won't have any particular impact.

Vaccinating someone who already fought off the disease will simply act as a booster, since they already have a prepared immune response.

Since HPV is not a RNA virus, it is not likely to be incorporated into human cells. In the unlikely event that it was incorporated (which would, IIRC, require a very circuitous route through an intermediary bacteria first), the odds of the change resulting in the production of the same antigenic proteins on the surface of human cells is very, very small. So, the odds of producing an immune reaction to human cells carrying viral DNA are at least astronomically slim and possibly none.

Perhaps these incidents will be tied to Gardasil, but it is impossible to draw any conclusions without more information.

Why four days? An immune reaction would have begun immediately and, in most cases, peaked within 48 hours. What were her symptoms prior to death? A connection seems unlikely.

Cold sweat, Fall, Foaming at mouth, Grand mal convulsion, Immediate post-injection reaction. . .Pt [patient, 14-year-old female] received vaccine, took 6 steps, fell to the ground unconscious and had a 60 sec grand mal seizure then regained consciousness. Now this may be directly connected. Seizure following injection is actually relatively common, whether you are getting a vaccine or novocaine at the dentist. Last I read, nobody is sure what the mechanism is, but it may have more to do with pain and stress response than what is injected.

Information has been received from a physician concerning a female patient who on an unknown date was vaccinated with a dose of Gardasil. Subsequently, the patient experienced a coma and is now paralyzed. At the time of this report, the patient's outcome was unknown. VAERS ID: 303188-1

What does subsequently mean? How long between injection and coma? Were there any symptoms leading up to the coma? This could be an allergic reaction to the vaccine, but I would expect them to have clearer details in that case.

T,
You are thinking of HSV - Herpes Simplex Virus (that causes Herpes fever blisters on the mouth and genitals),
not HPV - Human Papilloma Virus (that causes cervical and neck cancers, and vaginal warts)

Perhaps is enough for me..I don't know about others but I won't be giving my teenage daughters this vaccine. Not enough testing for one thing. I did state prior to posting this that I did not write it. So I am not able to answer the questions you raise.

The EXPERTS should know what might happen to the kids that have it, state it plainly and do efficient testing prior to introducing it to the population.. that's why it's my job to be the "neutral" observer and look at all possible outcomes prior to injecting it into my body or my childrens. Like the report stated all people's immune systems respond differently to vaccines.

It's obvious you are a vaccine advocate and I am not~ so we just agree to disagree on that... my whole problem with the massive "outburst" in new vaccines ..not enough information and not enough testing (especially long term) prior to marketing...blessings T

I am generally a vaccine advocate, but I don't have particularly strong feelings about HPV vaccination. If I had a daughter, I'd probably want her to be vaccinated, since several thousand women do die every year from cervical cancer. However, I don't see it as a pressing public health issue, the way mumps, measels, and pertussis are.

I'm not sure anything could ever be tested sufficiently for a doctor to really know how you'll react. The best we get are odds, but there are some seriously strange and uncommon reactions to just about any substance you can put in your body. I'm not sure what they mean when they say that every person's immune system responds differently. Most people's immune systems work exactly the same, varying only in terms of the strength of the response. Some people have allergic reactions, which is probably what they were getting at.

At any rate, the questions I posed were just things to think about. There are bound to be strange coincidences with any substance as commonly used as a vaccine. Therefore, it is more important to look for patterns than single instances of problems, since those single instances are often impossible to pin a cause to.
