NOTE: This is a thread resurrected from June 2008. Many of the questions you are going to ask have already been answered on this thread. PLEASE READ THE THREAD. (Dennis - 12/26/2019)

MAG security for All MAGs has been completed. You can now send a PM to Admin(s) for admission. BE SURE to read the MAG rules once you get setup for a MAG.

MAG FAQ's

Q - What are MAGs?

A - MAGs are "Mutual Assistance Groups", where people from different geographical regions can get together to discuss region-specific preparation and assistance issues. MAGs are designed to facilitate people helping one another in real life if TSHTF.

Q - What MAGs go to what areas?

A - As follows:

Northwest Region
Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming

Southwest Region
Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah

North Central Region
Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin

South Central Region
Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas

Northeast Region
Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Ohio, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, D.C.

Southeast Region
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia

Alaska / Hawaii Region
Alaska and Hawaii

Canada West Region
Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan

Canada Central Region
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec

Canada East region
Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island

European region
All of Europe including England

Australian region
Australian, New Zealand, and associated territories

Traveler's MAG
This MAG is for those people who "bug out" and/or live in RVs and travel the country. Both people who are travelers AND people who have offerings (such as space to park, etc) for travelers may be members.

Q - Do I have to join the MAG associated with my area?

A - No, if you feel that an adjoining MAG is a better fit for you, you can join that one.

Q - Can I join more than one MAG?

A - No

Q - Can I see into other MAG rooms?

A - No. There is an "Inter-MAG Communications" forum, where MAG members can post information or ask questions of other MAGs. Think of it as the foyer to a metting hall.

Q - Can non-MAG members see the MAGs?

A - No.

Q - How are MAGs organized?

A - That's up to the participants of each MAG. It would be best if a MAG's participants "elected" a person or persons to co-ordinate the overall direction and activities of the MAG, including real-world meet-ups.

Q - Can I or Should I divulge private information in a MAG, such as my home address or other contact information?

A - That's up to each member. Providing that information is something that would facilitate people getting together in a true emergency situation. However, it's not required.

Q - What topics are OFF LIMITS to discuss in the MAGs?

A - Anything that would be taboo on the rest of the forum, such as armed insurrection or overthrow of the government, how to "bypass" governmental controls of movement during a crisis, etc. Topics such as those would be discussed off TB. Any such threads discovered in the MAGs will be immediately removed, and the member subject to Administrative action.

Q - Once I'm signed up, how do I get in?

A - Start here: http://xf.timebomb2000.com/xf/index.php?forums/members-meetings.51/ and you'll see your MAG listed as a sub-forum under that area's "meeting" forum.

Q - Can MAG members meet in real life?

A - That is entirely up to the members, and the overall desired course of the MAG.

One more thing: There will be a sticky thread in each MAG that details EXACTLY who the current members are. If a member is disruptive, or engaging in activities or posts that are contrary to the interest of the MAG or the forum, the MAG leader(s) can request that the member be removed from the group. A staff member will investigate the behavior(s), and will remove them if the request is justified. Note that a MAG member won't necessarily be removed simply because they might not be "loved by all."

NEW: "Members Meetings" are for ALL registered members to set up meetings. MAG access is under the regional meeting rooms as a subforum that only those with permissions can see.

Dennis,
Who decided on the area divisions? I really think Michigan, Ohio and Indiana have a lot more in common with the North Central region than the Northeast Region. I'm not trying to be difficult. I was just wondering about the criteria for the regions.:shr:

I took an atlas of the US, and divided it into 6 quadrants using a marking pen. I tried to make each section as distinct as possible. No particular thought was given to the "things in common" because I didn't know (and CAN'T know, since I never lived in most states).

I'm really not being critical and I understand how hard it must be to make everybody happy. I am just kind of torn as far as which region I would like to affiliate with. If I go with the North Central then I might lose out on people who are actually in Michigan but choose the Northeast Region. Maybe someone can clear up my thinking here.

This too shall pass.
Just a thought --no criticism intended at all -- but I think the MAGs should probably split themselves up into smaller sub-groups. For instance, Alaska and Hawaii are in the same group...the Northwest Region covers over a thousand miles from east to west...and so on. Especially with gas prices so high -- and maybe not even available eventually -- seems like it would be a good idea for the people in each MAG to determine who is actually close to them and stay in touch with those people.

For me, someone in Northern Cal. or NW Nevada might be closer physically than someone in Portland or even Eugene. Not sure how I'll be able to determine that, though, if we can only look at our own MAGs? (Looking at the areas -- not sure if I should join the NW one or the SW one! We live about twenty miles or less from the Cali. border...)

Another possible way to organize this would be to have members volunteer to co-ordinate a MAG in their area, then put that member's general location on a list.

We could look down the list to see if there's a MAG nearby, and if not we might consider also volunteering to host one.

Yeah, the NE area covers a lot of ground, too, but I think groups will naturally get together based on geographic locqation. For instance, anyone in CT can be on my doorstep within 30 minutes. RI and MA are close, but not THAT close.

It'll all work out.

Already wrote to Intergator.

Just a note

If you are in Northern Virgina consider joining the NE MAG...we are much closer to Marlyand and DC than the rest of the SE MAG.

If folks review the FAQ's I wrote in the OP, they'll see that they don't have to join the MAG associated with their region, if they feel that a different region is more appropriate. The divison of the regions was entirely arbitrary, and based on a map of the US.

Dennis, do you have any hair left?

People, can't you just give this a try without going ape about how it was divided up?

Yes, lets get this up and running while there is time. We can fix the minor details later.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
bump--

I've put off joining the MAG's because I can't decide on where I want to be put. Living in south central Illinois (north central region), I feel that I have more in common with persons in Missouri (south cenral region) or Indiana (northeast region). But I don't want to miss anything going on here in the north central region. A member of that group may be living in the next town down the road!!! I can't join more than one and I can't even peek. AAUUGH!!! Decisions. Decisions. Lucky people in Europe! As soon as I decide, I'll contact either Intergator or Diamonds.

Thanks to everyone involved!!

Well, actually I think I would druther be in the Hawaii one, but foresee some logistical problems. Not that there might not be some of those for Alaska as well. I suspect, being the loner that I am, that I will reserve judgment and not join right away. I have a pretty good support group here of my own. Being able to visit and get my information on the board, think I will make out okay.

Tnx. Patricia

Bumping...

Wondering if pinning this might be a good idea? If not on Main, perhaps in the member's Meetings forum?

That way, if folks decide later that they wish to join a MAG, the directions on how to join are conveniently pinned.

Micah, it's not just you. There are a number of weird messages that people, including myself, are getting at random times. Dennis is going to do some work this Saturday on the board. Hopefully, that will take care of all the problems.

Just a general question here about how a MAG is supposed to work...

Let's say the SHTF (whatever that means).

Now, how is a TB2K member who lives in New York going to do anything to help, or get help, from a TB2K member who lives in Ohio or Pennsylvania? How is the MAG going to work?

warren.

Hi Warren !

I was thinking that once a member of a mag, each member would contribute to whatever the mag's capacity would be.

First get the members, then start talking, then get a feel for the members, eventually trade info via pm's when appropriate.

So many of us already have a feel for eachothers online persona. I don't know how it will go for me but I am excited to begin.

Well , that's my take.

What's the difference between the MAG thing and "members meetings?" It seems like they have the same purpose--with members meetings, you can meet and establish your own group and criteria and structure. The MAG thing seems like a top-down organization led by TB2K senior members (since they are the "gateway" into the MAG). Please correct me where I'm wrong.

If I may, I would like to comment that the Northeast MAG covers too broad an area. There should be a seperate MAG for New England states. Like Pass Go said, its a lot of area to cover. It a 17-hour drive from here to Indiana or Michigan. I don't see how they could even be considered a northeastern state. For reasons of practicality, I suggest that regions be broken up a little further, perhaps into areas that would take only a 4-hour ride to help someone.

The difference is, in "Member's meetings" all posts are available for all members of TB2K to view. In the MAG sections, only TB2K members of that MAG can view that forum.

MAG's are not a "top down" group. You only need to contact an Admin (Diamonds or Intergator) to get the "door" opened for your membership.

The wide area coverage will be a problem for all MAGs. It is left up to the members of each MAG to determine the parameters of inter-mag groups.

How do we go about contacting another MAG...in my case the one for Missouri, and let them know they are welcome in NW TN? say they, or anyone, is traveling through on their way and need a stop over place or something? Any suggestions? Thanks...

I would use the Members Meetings areas for such. If someone were interested, or had need, PM's would have to follow for sensitive information.

I'm in total agreement with you ShyGirl. I'm in Indiana and most family members and friends are in - In. Wisc. Ill. and Mi. I wish the Admins would consider scooting us over to North Central, then I'd consider joining up.

Mari Susan,

I managed to access the "Northwest MAG" by using the drop down menu at the bottom of the page. Not viewing the previous "PacNW MAG". Just make sure you're logged in as a member.
