If you're in your front yard, working in the flower bed or chatting with a neighbor, they'll pass by silently to attach one of the bags they're carrying to your frontdoor knob and leave without speaking or engaging you in debate.

Their mission? To place a copy of the Quran in every home in the United States.

"We're just trying to be honest brokers of information," Wajahat Sayeed, founder and director of Book of Signs, which is also known as the Al-Furqaan Foundation, told the Chicago Tribune. "You make your own judgment."

Al-Furqaan is distributing its 378-page paperback English translation of Islam's holy book using teams of paid walkers who descend on neighborhoods, going door-to-door, much like other deliverers of newpapers and advertisements. They don't hand them directly to residents but, instead, leave them at the front door – but never on the ground. That would be disrespectful.

The translation's forward asks readers to treat the book with respect. Those objecting to the free copy of the Quran are requested to call the foundation phone number to have it retrieved or to make a donation to a local mosque.

According to Sayeed, who checks for messages daily, 30 percent are appreciative, another 30 percent are indifferent and requesting that the book be taken back and the rest are often filled with expletives.

"It is not pleasant to hear that after all the effort you made," said Sayeed, who works full time for the foundation in addition to being a strategy consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

(Story continues below)

The Addison, Ill.-based organization says it has distributed more than 30,000 free copies of the Quran to homes around Houston, Texas, and another 70,000 in the Chicago area, including the evangelical stronghold of Wheaton.

Al-Furqaan's horizons go far beyond those two urban areas. The foundation aims to deliver copies of the Quran to every U.S. household. On its website, those interested can order copies by paying a shipping and handling charge. Sayeed is not concerned his American readers might be unable to understand the text.

"The general sense will be clear," he said, noting the foundation had chosen a translation Americans can easily read. "Islam teaches peace."

Al-Furqaan is not the only Muslim group distributing free Qurans.

WND reported in 2005, the Council on American-Islamic Relations came under fire for distributing a free English-language edition of the Quran that had been banned by the Los Angeles school district because commentary notes accompanying the text were regarded as anti-Semitic.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations had previously included the edition in the Islamic book-package it offers libraries nationwide and was giving it away to help "improve America's image" through a program called "Explore the Quran."

A complaint by a history teacher revealed problems with the CAIR-distributed version.

Surah (Chapter) 2:65 of the Quran, which reads like most English versions, says: "And well ye knew those amongst you who transgressed. In the matter of the Sabbath; we said to them: 'Be ye apes, despised and rejected."

In his corresponding note, the commentary reads: "There must have been a Jewish tradition about a whole fishing community in a seaside town, which persisted in breaking the Sabbath and were turned into apes."

Under the heading "Jews" in the book's index, is a reference to Surah 5:60, which says: " ... Those who incurred the curse of Allah and His wrath, those of whom some he transformed into apes and swine ... ."

In the index under "Jews" also are these phrases: "cursed," "enmity of," "greedy of life," "slew prophets," "took usury," "unbelief and blasphemy of" and "work iniquity."

Author and researcher Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, said that while the commentary notes in the CAIR-distributed version are particularly anti-Semitic, its rendering of the Quranic text largely is no different than any other version.

"It's an indication that what we think of as extreme in Islam is not really extreme but mainstream," he told WND. "You won't find a translation that doesn't have Jews being turned into apes and pigs."

As I said on a recent thread, I asked my muslim coworker for a copy, which he provided. I've been reading it a bit at a time (why is it that no matter WHAT religion you're reading about, their holy book is so damn hard to read. And that includes the Bible.) I wanted to read about islam from the source rather than get MSM spin. Should be an interesting read.

Good thinking D man. I usually send any and all religious folks packing, but I will accept as long as it doesn't have a bomb inside.

Yeah I have no problem with reading it.. heck, I read the Bhagavad Gita and I don't believe any of that.. lol and as Dennis says, know your enemy. Sometimes insight into how they think is your best weapon. It allows you to put yourself in their place and think like them.. who knows, some day that MAY come in handy.

I find it rude to solicit stuff at my home without asking me first. I don't care what it is.

And then ask me to go to the trouble of calling to return it or whatever, but don't throw it away. THAT is REALLY rude.

All I can say is.. What if a Bible Or copies of the Left Behind series was left on doors?.. But maybe if Christians myself included put forth that much effort maybe we would not even be having this discussion. This is indeed another dot as far as I am concerned.

Sounds like an Islamic version of The Gideons, specializing in direct distribution.

The Gideons are more indirect. They place Bibles in hotel rooms, not on the front doors of individual residences. At least, not that I have heard.

But there is a motel in Cuero, TX, owned by an Indian couple, where the Gideon Bible was nowhere to be found. Not one, not in any room. I found that to be unusual.

Each room at this motel did have a copy of Bhagavad Gita, however. I guess he wanted to help everybody expand their religious horizons.

And yes, his surname was Patel. :lkick:

Please don't be hasty in rejecting a copy of the Quran .
It has the potential for many fine uses as indicated below...

I am a little surprised (though not much surprises me anymore) that even though this is a WND article, the only real objection being expressed is actually in reference to a separate story from 2005 where the commentary notes of a particular printing of the Quran were considered anti-Semitic.

Islam requires conversion, dhimmitude or death to non-believers. Islam is a complete system of religious, economic and political submission under Sharia. In effect, distributing the Quran is an invitation by Muslims to replace our Constitutional Republic, Christianity and all of our freedoms with Sharia inspired by the Quran, the Haddiths, et al. As Muslims in America gain more power this invitation will become a demand as Allah requires.

At some point we have to raise the alarm and defend ourselves against Islam based on how it would affect the majority of Americans and not just how it views one particular minority group.

Even if Islam spoke favorably of Jews (which it most certainly does not) this would not change its ultimate demands on non-believers.

The objection to distributing the Quran needs to be that Islam is incompatible with our way of life and is a threat to us...not simply that it is anti-Semitic.

This too shall pass.
If they leave one here, I'll throw it in the dog pen for my pup to play with (dogs are as unclean in their religion as pigs, and I don't have any pigs). I've already read part of the Quran --- it's nothing but a mishmash of confusing, ignorant hogwash. How any intelligent person could believe any of it is beyond me, except that people like to be deceived.

There is no comparison with the Bible. Absolutely none.

You can get it online, at a library, or in a bookstore.

It's really not that bad in most parts, pretty much comparable to the Old Testament except for having the occasional passage urging violence to infidels and polytheists.

A worse influence on Muslims is the example of Muhammed, who robbed trade caravans, engaged in treacherous warfare including the breaking of treaties when he regained military strength, and the occasional assassination order.

Also he massacred the men of a Jewish tribe which had surrendered.

Are you seriously comparing the Bible to the Left Behind series? Seriously?

Anyway, I can't wait to throw it in the toilet.

This is a political dirty trick by Republicans. The probable Democratic nominee has a Muslim name, a Muslim father, attended Muslim school in his youth, and some still question whether he is still a secret Muslim. What better way to scare voters away from this candidate than to stoke fear of him by distributing Korans to every door in America in the months leading up to the election. There will be rumors of a secret Muslim plot to take over America if the Democrat gets elected.

I just hate the thought of more religious shit left tied to my entrance gate. Last year my neighbor took a pic of my gates, all that crap tied all over them, white-orange-blue-yellow-clear-red flappin plastic bags, yep - sorry stupid people defacing and trashing my property all the time with this shit.

They can keep their Koran.

+1 to what Dennis said. Know thine enemy.

I wouldn't go out and waste money buying one myself but I'd read it if I had time if someone handed me a copy. And there's no WAY I'd convert to it - I'm not religious at all and if I was going to suddenly become so joining a religion that dresses their women like beekeepers is the last thing I'd do.

While I wouldn't use it as TP (I don't like the idea of doing that to any book, even ones I don't like) I wouldn't hesitate to read it while eating a BLT sandwich either  .

I agree. This way, they complete the requirement of "invite the infidel to convert", thus making any future attack legit, and then they can go to their "heaven" with however many virgins they keep up there. This will indeed be an invitation to convert to Islam. DOT.

My free copy will be placed next to my copy of the Communist Manifesto and Mao's Little Red Book of quotations. The latter volume was used by me to counter a couple of radical federal (soon-to-be ex) employees that were creating trouble in the work place in the 1970's.

I would read it when out camping because you need toilet paper when you out there. You have to know your enemy and what trips his trigger once they have lost their temper they are easier to destroy.

Nodding.

There's plenty of free sources for religious reading materials of your choice, any choice at all, I'll not be part of helping them fulfill their heavenly mandates.
