Mountain House Shuts Off the Spigot for Their Canned Foods; Pouches Remain Available

Demand at Five Times the Level of Last Year
Huge Backorder List for Cans Bogs MH Down till Mid-Fall at Least

Mountain House foods are the bellwether products for the emergency storage food industry, and it is becoming apparent that emergency food in general serves as a leading indicator for the broader food marketplace in America. As such, here's a milestone development that all here need to take note of ...

AS OF MAY 15 ...

Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dry, Inc.) notified dealers that demand is up to five times last year's levels and that they are forced to stop taking further orders for their canned varieties for several months, in order to catch up.

Current back-orders are now out into July, so for those who submitted orders in the first half of May--please be patient--you are not forgotten, just way down the list at this point. Orders submitted earlier are due to ship soon. Be assured--there is no worry about submitted orders not being filled. If you have an order outstanding--it WILL be processed as soon as possible.

Those of you still awaiting delivery of a 3-case/18-variety kit, we are yet waiting for shipment of the last of the bulk order for the contents of those kits. We still expect that buyers will take delivery by about the end of May.

So ... we have removed our Mountain House can-case listings until further notice (probably the Sept./Oct. timeframe).

HOWEVER--WE DO HAVE ONE GOOD SIZED EXTRA ORDER OF MOUNTAIN HOUSE CANS in the queue that should arrive here in July. At that point, we will make a special offer to members for that food, so stay tuned if that is of interest.

Other Emergency Foods Getting More Scarce as Well

In addition, we have been informed by other suppliers that they are on the verge of running out of a wide range of emergency foods. So we have made an additional bulk order of some basic foods such as canned butter, cheese, bread, rice, and more to serve the needs of our members for at the least the short term.

All indications are, the food crisis will become much worse before it improves. Act accordingly please, and prepare your household.

Mountain House Pouches Remain Available

Mountain House foods packed in mylar, stand-up pouches (in single-, double-, and 4-serving sizes) remain available. We have done the math and compared the pouches to the cans and we have been surprised to realize that with the latest can-price hikes, the pouches actually deliver about the same food value as the cans, dollar for dollar, calorie for calorie.

The main difference is really the shelf life you are purchasing ... 7 years for the pouches vs. 25 to 30 years for the cans. (How many think the time before they need to dig into their emergency stores now will be out there beyond 7 years???)

Of course, on the plus side, you are able to stock up on a wider variety of foods for your money and have your meals prepackaged in meal-sized, warm-able containers!

So here you go ... we've got some deals in the pouches for you effectively immediately ...

POUCH CASE SPECIALS

Purchase pouch cases totaling at least $1275 (after member discount), and we'll apply an EXTRA 10% discount off your order after you checkout and before we charge your card. That's a 30% discount for buyers club members! And of course, everything ships free, as always.

Or, purchase at least $650 worth of pouch cases (after member discount), and we'll apply an EXTRA 5% discount on your order after you checkout and before we charge your card. That makes for a 25% discount for buyers club members!

Sorry--this offer does not apply to the 7-Day Just in Case kit or the 72-Hour kit.

Thank you

JC,

Thank you for posting this. The times are later than most folks realize and it's getting harder and more expensive to prep. It always seems easy to put off 'til tomorrow what you should do today - or now, should've done yesterday - until you realize that your window of opportunity is closing.

Like many on the board, I have been scoffed at and ignored as I recommended that certain family and friends: Buy silver at under $5/oz and gold at under $325/oz. Buy and store diesel when it was cheap. Buy prep food when all food was cheaper. Get out of the cities and buy sustainable rural property, etc., etc. These days I mostly just keep my own counsel.

By now, it's either (virtually) impossible or hugely more expensive to do these things. I hope some act on your warning.

Best regards
Doc

JCR, thanks for the heads-up on this. Indeed the sheeple may be awakening. This event shows that once the reality of impending food shortages hits the masses, store shelves in general will be bare, and rationing WILL be put into place. I also want to say publicly that I appreciate you having products like these available to TB members.

Doc and Dennis, food today may seem expensive. But relative to where food prices are still headed, folks will soon look back and see what a bargain they still had with today's prices.

I've even seen a couple of financial investment advisors publicly counseling that the best place for investment dollars right now is in food and a few other tangible necessities.

Foodwise, at this point, price is not the biggest issue, compared to availability issues in the near future.

By far the biggest reason for any impending shortages is the fact that there are increasing numbers of folks buying in bulk to put food and supplies away. Yes--they're latecomers to the party, but their numbers are definitely swelling ... and they are all still way ahead of the vast majority who are yet to act. THAT is the scariest thing out of all of this.

All the normal market segments are "all in." Government agencies, aid groups, corporations, and household buyers.

For the last several months, since the handwriting was on the wall, anyone and everyone who has wanted to lock in today's food prices have been buying storage food.

Vic,

As always, I don't know whether to say 'thanks' or 'holy carp!'.

I will fall back on thanks.

JC....the article was in the Wall Street Journal a couple of weeks ago telling people their best short term investment is in food. The author made the case that food prices are appreciating at a higher rate than CDs, savings accounts, or money markets.

It doesn't get much more mainstream than that. The masses are starting to wake up and think about stocking up. Just that fact is enough to create shortages....let alone everything else going on in the world.

Sure am glad I bought those 40 cases of MH from you a couple of years ago. DW and I really had to think about it before we laid out that kind of money.....man, we look really smart now!!

I wish we had the cash to have done that. Really. We have a lot of food stored, but those MH cases are IMO a great product.

It was a big stretch for us back then.....I'd hate to think what I would spend now. We couldn't afford to do MH products for every meal. I have found that the MH products, especially the entrees like lasagna, beef stew, etc....help to stretch long term storage staples like beans and rice. When you add in vegggies that you have hopefully harvested or stored from the garden....you really can eat well. Even canned veggies purchased from generic places like Aldi's are still relatively cheap. Our local place was running grean beans, corn, and peas for 3 for $1. The expiration date was 2010. Needless to say....I stocked up.

Our plan is to NOT dip into the MH or the LTS food until absolutely necessary. As long as we can still get food, we will keep paying the higher prices. I am still managing to put some back for LTS, just not nearly the amount we used to. Unfortunately, I can see the day coming where food availability...at any price....will be an issue.

I have lots of experience with the dark side of people. I have seen what folks will do to each other over a $10 bag of dope, or even a can of beer. I have no wish to venture out in a quest for food when the madness begins. Seriously, the best plan will be to hunker down and wait for the early waves of violence to subside. Unless you live somewhere where there are literally NO people....you are just not going to be able to get out and hunt, garden, forage, scrounge....etc. At least you won't be staying alive for very long if you try that. I am attempting to get the LTS food to a level where we can exist on it without other means. The gardens, hunting, fishing, etc will come later.

MH website - didn't see anything there

Please provide a link. Maybe I had an old one. No problem with a shortage on canned food on Mountaina House. What am I doing wrong, or am I?

That's huge

500% increase. Not many businesses have seen that kind of increase this year. In fact, I can't think of one. Perhaps alt energy/solar, for much the same reason.

Gee, do you suppose folks are having their wiley coyote moment?

Mountain House is not alone with this kind of surge this year. Other emergency storage food providers are doing similar levels of business--overextending capacities and abilities to find raw materials to produce their products.

Food is the main thing right now, but preparedness in general is in growth mode this year, while of course many other mainstream businesses are struggling.

Clearly, the outlook for the future among a slowly growing number of consumers and organizations is toward contingency planning and risk management.

I say "slowly growing number" because, I would estimate that we probably have yet to see 75% or more of the households out there take any serious preparedness actions as yet.

The trend is clear though. The old supply and demand see-saw in food markets is ratcheting up prices, with no apparent end in sight. Somehow, growing demand will have to be satisfied ... or suppressed by market forces if capacities are insufficient.

Everything I've been buying for the last three years, have started having shortages. Beans, bullets, and bullion. I already had Bibles.

You know what else is selling fast this year? -- Our Montague folding bikes.

No surprise, given the gasoline/oil horrors out there.

I'm going to post another thread linking to our great new Paratrooper folding video.

JC-
Nice site you have...

We would like to order a few items.

Do you carry the Big Berkeys in stock (not back ordered?)

and do you take personal checks?

CC's I don't like.

Thanks in advance.

WA--Yep, we do have several Big Berkeys here ready to ship. (Other Berkefeld products we have dropshipped from the NA distributor.)

Personal checks are OK, but be advised, we have to hold up the transaction for as long as two weeks to be sure the check clears before we can ship merchandise.
