How are you finding Meat prices?

I just got home from a meat shopping trip and it was terrible. It took me forever standing over the meat counters figuring out what to buy because everything is so expensive. I bought everything on sale, but the sale prices look like a month agos regular price or higher. I wanted to buy some steaks to bbq for the long weekend because my girls are coming home, but passed on that and bought a beef roast instead. The steaks were $8.50-10.00 for one sirlion. Even chicken was expensive, I bought some, but not as much as I would have liked. Even ham was was up big time. Hamburger meat is what I bought the most of, yuck. So, thread question, how are you finding meat prices?

The ice is almost off the lake, we need to fish this season for necessity, not for fun like we used to. Hopefully the catching is good close by because gas for the boat will end up being another problem. :shk:

Meat here in NW California is actually lower than it's been in a while, very good prices. I just bought hamburger for $1.65 /lb, I think it was. Cross rib roast is fetching $2.99, and I think pork is something under $2 for the budget cuts.

Last week my favorite ham steaks, Cook's, were going for 1.99.

There was another thread that suggested meat prices down here are so low because farmers can't afford the rising feed costs, and so are sending the meat to slaughter before its usual time.

Oh Kate, there's another source of free meat besides the fish for you .... meat that you were hand feeding over the winter .... ;)

I picked up some pork chops about a week ago on sale for .99 a lb. I bought quite abit and vaccum sealed them cause their suppose to sky rocket from here on. I bought some hamburger for tacos that night and couldn't believe it was like $3.99 a lb for only 70% lean ! It's gone way up. They had chicken leg and thigh quarters for 1.49 a lb on sale. I remember when I used to buy those not that long ago on sale for .39-.59 a lb. So meats gotten high around here. I usually only buy on sale and mark downs, but the sales aren't that great anymore. Except for the great buy I got on the pork chops. They're back to way high now so I'm glad I loaded up. Wish I'd bought more now though !!!!!

I found cheap roast on sale early this week for 1.99/lb, boneless chicken breasts for 5.99/lb (passed those up for bone-in breasts at 1.99/lb and deboned them myself), and chicken hearts for the kitties at the regular 2.59/lb. I got some really awful burger. Don't remember the price. It smelled like dirty socks while cooking, and the kitties ate most of it. YUK

If I find a porterhouse I really like I can spend 14.99/lb at the great independent meat place in McKenna. But...if I really am disgusted by the arbitrary ups and downs in price at my local Fred Meyer and Safeway meat cases (cheap roasts go up to 3.99/lb without rhyme or reason), I just leave the store without buying.

If we don't send a message by refusing to buy, then we're just asking for high prices.

Ya except I looked them in the eye and I will get thrown in jail. We live on a game preserve. Don't think it won't cross my mind in the future if times get really tough though. I like deer meat. Dh goes hunting for it, he makes awesome sausage. We should have brought the smoker he had at the store out here. Wonder what happened to it? I'll have to ask him. Thanks. ;)

I run a meat market in the meat world (pun intended)Stuff is going up WELL beyond the CPI listings. For example:
The cost of boneless pork I paid for...went up 60 percent in a month.

Ya'll ain't seen nuthin yet.

Here's what I paid.

Lean ground hamburger - 5.97kg
Roast Beef - 12.99kg
Pork Chops - 6.50kg
Chicken - 7.25kg

Had to go look at the pkgs because my bill just shows pkg total on it.

454g = 1 LB

I'm always scouting for good deals on meat since I feed the dogs real meat as well as the humans.

This week I was pleasantly surprised to see Albertsons had London Broil on sale for $1.69 a pound. I bought about 35 pounds, and I'm going back tomorrow for another load. Usually the best price I can get is about $1.99 a pound for London Broil.

At Walmart (sorry, my shopping choices are limited), I buy 10 pound bags of chicken quarters for 47 cents a pound, and this price has been holding. I still try to fill the freezers as much as possible because I can see the price will only go up!

Also at Walmart, I buy pork (labeled Carnitas) for $1.12 a pound.

I am stockpiling all of the above.

I had a shock last weekend. Looked at the steaks, something we don't eat, and they were $12.00 for one steak. The chicken was about $8.00 for a pack of 4 breasts. I am now trying to buy the meat that is ready to go out of date that is on sale. We used to buy organic, but it is getting harder to afford $6 - $7 a pound for ground meat. I wished we would have bought another 40lbs. of chicken before the price went up.

Chicken breasts have been running at $1.49 on sale. $1.99 when not on sale.
Leg quarters are around 99 cents a lb when not on sale.

I don't buy beef for us or pork but the prices have been a tiny bit lower the past couple weeks but I predict that will hit the roof soon.

Even the 1 1/3 lb pack of ground turkey went way up. I was paying $2.49 for a pack of it (I use it instead of beef or pork cause those give hubby the gout) and now it is $3.99 reg price........forget fish. Can't touch that with a ten foot pole. 3/4 lb of salmon or similar (not much choice in fish up here) runs about $6 a package. I can't afford to pay that much for just one meal. So we eat chicken and turkey..

I am praying someone hits another deer or moose soon. We are on the road kill list......altho, I don't have a freezer to keep it in, I used the cooler on the deck this winter for meat from the road kill......sigh.

Not too bad here yet.

I got some ground hamburger from Wally World the other day (lean) and I think it was like 6 or 7 for two pounds.

Still having sales around here. Top round london broil is on sale for $1.39/lb. Was $1.99/lb two weeks ago on sale and it's normally somewhere around $3.60/lb.

Guess who's going to be making a whooole lot of jerky this weekend?? ;)

We are going to order another 1/2 beef cut like we want ,wrapped and frozen for $2.09 per pound. The last 1/2 beef we bought was $1.89 per pound. The beef is locally grown and butchered locally.
