Has No Life - Lives on TB
We have a "fair" dial-up internet connection since we're too far out in the boonies to get high-speed, but I've noted that, time and time again, TB2k is MUCH faster to load than ANY other webpage I visit.

So, whatever you do Dennis, thank you!

I had a dial-up connection a year ago and TB2K worked fine on it.

TB2K is a great performing sight.

I now have RoadRunner for $39.95/month and it is fantastic. I don't have cable and I am not much of a sports fan. The broadband connection does allow me to down load at about 1MB per second and I can watch any video out on the net. Movies, news, YouTube etc.

There is a whole 'nother world out there that does not include the Network MSM junk or pricey cable.

Try broadband if you can, you'll like it.

And again, Kudos to Dennis and his crew!

That's funny, it's always been the opposite for me whether on dial-up or wireless: TB2K has always been the slowest site to load a thread, especially if you hit the "last post" button.

This website is ENTIRELY contained in a huge database. Every page you see is "built" when you click the button, on-the-fly. What kind of response you get depends on a number of things.

- How many people are clicking things at the same moment you are

- How many people are using SEARCH (and the associated "New Posts" link, which uses SEARCH to show you those threads)

- What other background tasks are running on the servers at that time

- How many people are on your cable loop (if you have a cable modem)

I find that IN GENERAL, I can get a page refresh within 5-6 seconds (adequate but not great). Occasionally, they can take up to 15 seconds to refresh, at which point I get extremely nervous. If that continues, Jon and I will be having a conversation.

Thanks for the kind words, but really, this place runs on autopilot about 98% of the time.

I confess that the fast loading pages are what hooked me on TB2K. Ten times as fast as any other source on dial-up. Add to the speed all the complete articles copied, (fair use applies!) TB2K made getting the news easy and fast. Super site!

- Replacing PHP with something that is compiled if possible will help.
- Make sure you're using the right kind of tables and your database options are set up correctly.
- Proper uses of indexes on database tables will speed things up dramatically, if not already done.
- Compressing the output stream will help with download times.
- Use of lightweight graphics helps A LOT.
- Making sure you're running the latest version of vBulletin, PHP, and Linux/FreeBSD/whatever OS your server's running helps.

I do this sort of thing every day for my employer. I'm sure that you've implemented most, if not all, of the above. A lot of people overlook compressing the output stream and letting the browser uncompress the HTML output - it helps a lot, especially over a dialup or satellite connection and if your ISP doesn't do it already on-the-fly.
