Local food banks hurting

Hardly news to the group here, but another small dot on the map.

A food shortage at a regional food bank is having ripple effects in Davidson County.

Pastor's Pantry Executive Director Jo Ann Poston was shocked last week when she learned the stock at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Forsyth County - where the local agency receives or purchases about 50 percent of the food it distributes to senior citizens here - was very low.

"Our pantry coordinator, Gail Brice, stuck her head in my office last week and said do not make any appointments for new clients," Poston said. "I asked her why, and she said the shelves at Second Harvest were bare."

For example, there is no rice at Second Harvest. This means Pastor's Pantry clients here will receive no rice in their monthly free food distribution.

Note the shortage of rice? Very interesting, since our Asian population is relatively small here. It can't be them buying it all up.

Also, it's pointed out in the article that this is always a bad time of year as people begin to travel for vacations. Hard to tell how much is donors on the road, food not available and how much is increased need.

Do people in your area watch TV?

The TV is all but commanding them to go out and buy rice now, before the price goes up.

The rice "shortage" is a media generated shortage, IMHO.

Amazed

Does too have a life!
The fact is that food banks, like everyone else will have to change how they operate. People receiving the free food will have to go without rice. Maybe potatoes can be an alternative. At our house if something is too expensive or unavailable, we go without. Period.
