Egypt leaks information about an American military action against Syria

LINK

Jordanian newspaper Al-Arab Al-Youm reported today, through sources that an American message leaked by Egypt to Syria shows that the United States is ready to launch a broad military operation against Syria if it insists on its position on the Lebanese crisis and this is the real reason behind the deployment of “USS Cole” in front of the Syrian - Lebanese waters[/color]

The source said that the official announced reason of Condoleezza Rice’s visit to Egypt is to push the Palestinian - Israeli peace process forward but the real reason is to explain the American military actions and the presence of the American ships to the Egyptian leadership.

Update

This is reported today “US waived congressional restriction on Egypt aid” … which makes the above report authentic.

New Israel Gaza incursion overshadows Rice peace push

by Sylvie Lanteaume
46 minutes ago LINK

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel launched a new incursion into the Gaza Strip on Tuesday overshadowing a new peace push by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who was holding Jerusalem talks with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the time.

Rice had earlier met moderate Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas who broke off all contacts with Israel on Sunday after a previous incursion killed more than 120 people, 22 of them children, and who responded to her call for a resumption of talks with a demand for a comprehensive ceasefire.

Israeli forces backed by helicopters clashed with Hamas gunmen after several tanks entered the Gaza Strip east of the city of Khan Yunis, witnesses said.

Hamas forces opened fire with small arms and mortars at the Israeli forces that entered southern Gaza near the Kissufim crossing between Israel and the Hamas-ruled territory, the witnesses said.

According to Palestinian security sources, Israeli troops were laying siege to a house of a member of the radical Islamic Jihad movement in the village of al-Karara, several hundred metres (yards) from the border.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli army.

The incursion came as Olmert held talks with Rice who had earlier called for Israel to be "very cognizant of the effects of its operations on innocent people".

The US chief diplomat called on both Israel and the Palestinians to renew peace talks that were dealt a major blow by the deadly Israeli onslaught of the past week.

"We look forward to the resumption of negotiations as soon as possible," Rice said after meeting Abbas.

She said President George W. Bush's goal of resolving the decades-old conflict and inking a historic peace deal by the end of his term in January 2009 was still possible.

"I still believe that that can be done," she told reporters.

Bush, too, said after meeting Jordan's King Abdullah in Washington that he was still "optimistic" about the prospects for the peace talks, relaunched to great fanfare at a US conference in November after a seven-year freeze.

The US president urged the two sides to "step up" efforts to end the violence and reach a deal.

Abbas did not say when he might return to the negotiating table, but insisted that "the negotiations are necessary and we are committed to them."

Lead Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qorei told reporters talks will resume once Israel's military operations in the Palestinian territories end.

Abbas called for a truce between Israel and the Palestinians, both in his West Bank powerbase and in the Gaza Strip, which has been ruled since June by the rival Hamas movement after the Islamists routed his forces.

"I insist on the necessity of installing a comprehensive truce in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank so that we can reach our goal of making 2008 a year of peace," Abbas said.

But Hamas rejected the Palestinian president's call for a reciprocal ceasefire, insisting the blame lay with Israel.

"We consider the statements of the Palestinian president about the truce an unbalanced call because the problem lies in the occupation, not in the Palestinian people," its spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said.

The bloodshed continued on Tuesday, with Israeli raids killing two Palestinians in Gaza, from which militants fired three rockets, with one falling inside the Jewish state.

Rice reiterated that the rocket fire had to stop and called on Israel -- which earned international condemnation for excessive use of force during the Gaza attacks -- to spare innocent lives during its raids.

"The United States of course understands Israel's right to defend itself, but Israel needs to be very cognizant of the effects of its operations on innocent people," she said.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak warned that the strikes on Gaza would continue as long as militants fired rockets, and he placed the responsibility for the killing of civilians on Hamas.

"The operations will continue," he said during a visit to northern Israel. "To those who criticise us, our friends among us, I say that the responsibility lies with those who fire rockets."

Rice's visit coincided with the publication of a Vanity Fair article claiming that she and Bush covertly worked to oust Hamas after it won 2006 parliamentary elections, breaking the decades-long hold on power of Abbas's Fatah party.

Citing confidential documents, the magazine said the United States sought to arm a force led by Fatah loyalists to oust Hamas militants from power, but that the plan backfired.

"Instead of driving its enemies out of power, the US-backed Fatah fighters inadvertently provoked Hamas to seize total control of Gaza," it said.

Lebanon Orders Army to "Achieve High Combat Readiness"

Bad guys are already talking about it on their forums..

What do you mean by this?

------------------

I found the following just now:

Lebanon Orders Army to "Achieve High Combat Readiness"

Yarze - There are more signs of a wider regional war as Tears for Lebanon (TFL) and Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) are reporting Army Commander General Michel Suleiman has ordered his officers to "achieve high combat readiness of their units to confront all expected possibilities, especially defending the southern land, maintain domestic security and stability." General Suleiman was issuing the directives to his senior commanders of Lebanon's most important units from his headquarters at Yarze a suburb east of Beirut. This is definitely within the time-table of Tehran as most of Lebanon's military has close relations with Damascus-Hezbollah. He said the army's "basic duty is to prevent the Israeli enemy from occupying Lebanese territories or attempting to use them as a passage to launch an aggression against Arab brethren." [TFL]

Though Lebanese units in the south began to assist Hezbollah during the 2006 war the rest of the military in the north began to realize they should cooperate with Tehran during the three month fighting last year against the suicide unit Fatah al-Islam at the Palestinian refugee camp city Nahr al-Bared near Tripoli. Fatah al-Islam was sent by Tehran for just that purpose. Almost the day after that conflict finally ended last August General Suleiman stated publicly Lebanon can now turn its weapons against its main enemy-Israel. Now Iran wants them to go into action and I suspect Tehran has helped re-arm Lebanon's army just as Iran has re-supplied Hezbollah. Suleiman also stated yesterday, "The army's determination is backed by the people and the resistance to confront any new Israeli aggression with all available means and capability. Defending the land is a sacred right consolidated by international charters; it is a national priority that deserves unifying resources and efforts." He concluded by pledging the army will not fall back "if the enemy decided to occupy the south because abandoning this territory means abandoning the whole of Lebanon."

Though Lebanon has the weakest army in the region they will still be an obstacle to Israel's security in their north as Hezbollah will no longer have to face Israel by itself and Syria will also be active in the area perhaps re-entering the country not as an invader but as a military axis partner with Lebanon and Palestinian groups.

Damascus - An Iranian official arrived in Damascus Monday evening with very little publicity. No mention was made as to the length of his stay but it must be to put the finishing touches on details of Syria's then Iran's military entry into this year's war against Israel in support of Hezbollah and the Palestinian state. This is in accordance with the security-defense agreement signed by the two governments in June 2006 and this latest series of meetings are being conducted under the guise of Iran Minster of Housing and Urban Development Mohammad Saeedi-Kia who is at the head of an unnamed delegation. Obviously Saeedi-Kia is not here to discuss urban planning or coordination of statements to the press when the war expands. But rather coordination of Iran's brigade size Rapid Deployment Force with Syria-Hezbollah-Lebanese-Palestinian units is the topic under discussion. [IRNA]

Actually, S of T. There are (at least) 3 more warships near-by.

One of them being a nuclear attack sub.

They'll have some surface-to-surface missile capability, but no real air power. Of course, that can come from Iraq now, and maybe Incirlik in Turkey. I can't imagine Bush would order a strike on Syria given his recent Mideast peace overtures. Strategic deception for the sake of surprise attacks is typically the domain of totalitarian regimes, not democracies.....except, of course, Israel!

When the "Support Ship" are the USS Nassau ESG, you have your carrier, your ground troops, and enough CAS and other air assets to do pretty much what ever you want to do....

Here si what the Nassau sailed with in 06:

French peacekeepers Launch War games in South Lebanon

French peacekeepers carried out war games in south Lebanon on Tuesday in what appeared to be a an orientation with the terrain abutting Israel.

The state-run National News Agency (NNA) said a unit of the French contingent serving with the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) backed by Armored Personnel carriers carried out the maneuver in the eastern sector of south Lebanon, better known as the Arqoub region.

The French contingent, the report added, carried out similar maneuvers last week in the central sector of the southern province abutting Israel.

UNIFIL and troops of the Lebanese army patrol a demilitarized zone south of the Litani River in line with UNSCR Resolution 1701 that ended 34 days of war between Hizbullah and Israel in August, 2006.

It seems like the U.S. and France are acting on some alarming intel of some sort.

Was Israel's abrupt withdrawal from Gaza a reaction to Washington giving the Israelis a heads up of signficant U.S. imminent military action elsewhere?

hmmmm

I am still wondering what kind of national interest we have launching a military strike on Syria.

Other than the desire for more bloodshed and more hatred towards American interests and a wider M.E. conflagration.

Thanks for your mil info Chuck, very informative.

DEBKA thinks Syria has plans to overthrow the L. gov.

http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=1337

Therefore, it is feared in Washington and Jerusalem that, while plotting revenge on Israel, Hizballah, backed by the Syrian commando units, will launch attacks on Lebanese national intelligence and Druze targets in Beirut and Mt.
Lebanon as they point a finger at Druze leader Walid Jumblatt. Their immediate goal would be to overthrow the pro-Western, anti-Syrian government headed by Fouad Siniora and stir up a new civil war. The door would then re-open for Syria to make a comeback to the troubled country and move troops in for the first time since they were thrown out in 2005, in contravention of UN Security Council resolutions."

Lebanon was always part of Syria, and it's not likely that they'll ever settle for less than repatriation. Kind of like Turkey setting up bases in Northern Iraq now.

That article is worth reading in full, for the newshound. THe Syrians allege/may have followed the trail from evidence re that recent assassination, to have discovered a ring of spies and from that, further Israeli moles in Lebanon's intel agencies as well as key personnel in other countries.

As to our interests, Syria is a client of iran, and by proxy the Soviets.

Lebanon has been in the past a reasonably friendly country, doing business, educating americans, etc....

If Syria wants to re-invade then they are throwing our relationship with Lebanon in our faces....

PLUS the geopolitical map makes Lebanon/Syria more important than one would like them to be..

'USS Cole aims to dissuade any Hizbullah reprisal against Israel'

This is the best assessment I could find. The U.S. is positioning warships off Lebanon to intimidate Syria from intervening should Israel strike hard against Hezbollah. Hezbollah is still yet to retaliate for the Mughniyeh's "assassination", which was a farce IMHO:

http://www.thetreeofliberty.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5313

If Hezbollah starts lobbing Katyushas on Northern Israel, the IDF will likely make carpet out of Hezbollah positions in Southern Lebanon. The U.S. is prepositioning to deter Syria from getting involved.

'USS Cole aims to dissuade any Hizbullah reprisal against Israel'
Analyst: US sent destroyer to keep lebanon under its 'wing'
By Michael Bluhm
Daily Star staff
Wednesday, March 05, 2008
http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=1&categ_id=2&article_id=89559

BEIRUT: Despite US assertions that it deployed the USS Cole off Lebanon's coast to support regional stability, the destroyer's presence represents symbolic backing for the March 14 faction, an attempt to contain Hizbullah and put pressure on Syria in the regional context, a number of analysts told The Daily Star on Tuesday.

The guided-missile destroyer arrived in international waters off Lebanon's shores the evening of February 28, as White House National security Spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the purpose of the USS Cole and other warships joining it shortly near Lebanon was "a show of support for regional stability."

"Initially we thought it might have been to support Israel vis-a-vis Gaza," said Amal Saad-Ghorayeb, visiting scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center. "I don't think we can say it's there to target Syria or the Gazans or whomever. The statements coming out of the Bush administration all mention Lebanon.

"It's there for Lebanon, to support [Prime Minister Fouad] Siniora. 'Regional stability' is a euphemism for 'To keep Lebanon under our wing.'"

She added that the choice to sail a warship to Lebanon's coast demonstrates the "political bankruptcy" of US President George W. Bush's administration, after countless initiatives pushed by the US and its regional allies have failed to break the 16-month-old political impasse here between the March 14 camp and the Syrian-backed March 8 opposition.

In addition to signaling support for its allies in the March 14 governing coalition, the USS Cole also sends a message to Hizbullah to reconsider any plans to retaliate against Israel for the February 13 assassination of senior resistance commander Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, said retired General Elias Hanna, who teaches political science at Notre Dame University.

"It's a message for Hizbullah after the two speeches of [party chief Sayyed] Hassan Nasrallah about open war" against Israel after Mughniyeh's killing, Hanna said, adding that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's recent expression of dismay over the term "open war" added to the pressures deterring Hizbullah from retaliating.

"Maybe now they will wait, but everything is up to Iran," which backs Hizbullah financially and militarily, Hanna added.

The US Marines in the convoy accompanying the USS Cole present a dramatic symbolism as well - the US has long fingered Mughniyeh in the November 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut that drove American troops from Lebanon, and after Mughniyeh's death the Marines are again approaching Lebanon, Saad-Ghorayeb said.

"It's too provocative," she added. "On a symbolic level it targets Hizbullah. "The [warships] are there both symbolically and [because] the US is resorting now to flexing its military muscle in the face of Hizbullah's declaration that it's going to respond to Israel for Mughniyeh's assassination."

Although the US has made clear that the USS Cole would be in the waters off Lebanon, its presence will also impact other nearby US foes such as Syria and Iran, she said.

"You can't extricate one from the other," Saad-Ghorayeb said. "You can't extricate Hizbullah from Iran and Syria."

"A lot of officials have actually said it's to target Syria," she added. "It could also be a message to target Iran. In and of itself, this is simply going to increase tension."

Regarding Syria, the Cole's arrival adds to the list of worries plaguing Syria, as part of the US desire to pluck Damascus from its alliance with Tehran and Hizbullah, Hanna said.

"When you look at the American project in the region, you have to look at it holistically," Hanna added. "Their next move will be to contain Iran and separate Syria from Iran. This is the main issue. Maybe now they are trying to threaten the regime itself.

"If Syria is isolated from Iran, all the tentacles of Iran will be cut."

Syrian President Bashar Assad has to juggle the UN tribunal investigating the series of political killings here, the bombing last September by Israel of a Syrian site allegedly connected to weapons activity, the probably absence of major Arab leaders from the Arab League summit in Damascus later this month and the aftershocks of having Mughniyeh killed while under Syria's ostensible protection.

"It's highly dangerous for the regime to have Imad Mughniyeh killed there," Hanna said.

While US officials tout the abilities of the Cole to ensure stability in the region, the destroyer's appearance here means in reality that the United States "expects some instability," said political analyst Simon Haddad.

"It is becoming clearer that a regional war will happen in the coming months," Haddad added. "The positioning of the USS Cole is not directed against Lebanon - it is most certainly directed against the Syrians. I think the next war will be directed against Hizbullah by the Israelis, and maybe the Americans want to prevent a Syrian intervention."

Whatever the US intentions in dispatching the Cole, its presence might boomerang by driving out some of the Sunnis from the March 14 coalition or by tempting militants here to attack the destroyer, which lost 17 sailors in a suicide bombing by Al-Qaeda in Yemen's Aden port in October 2000, said Saad-Ghorayeb.

"One consequence could be to provoke Al-Qaeda elements to target it," she said. "This is obviously a prime target for them, considering it was already attacked. This looks like it's bait, almost."

"It might cause a split in the Sunni community," which has many anti-American members, she added. "It will be hard for the Future Movement to argue that this is legitimate or not in any way condemn this. It might well close ranks between some Sunnis and Hizbullah."

Although the US has not said how long the Cole will remain on station off Lebanon, the destroyer will draw acute attention if it remains here if and when Hizbullah takes its avowed revenge on Israel for Mughniyeh's assassination, Saad-Ghorayeb said.

"That's the real litmus test for them," she added. "Things are to really change once Hizbullah responds."

Israel Says Hezbollah Has 30,000 Rockets
By EDITH M. LEDERER – 21 hours ago

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Israel has said Hezbollah is rearming and has an arsenal that includes 10,000 long-range rockets and 20,000 short-range rockets in southern Lebanon, according to a report from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Ban's report to the Security Council, obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, did not confirm Israel's claim. But the U.N. chief reiterated his concern about Hezbollah's public statements and persistent reports pointing to breaches of a U.N. arms embargo, which bans weapons transfers to the militant Islamic group.

Ban also expressed concern at "the threats of open war against Israel" by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah has accused Israel of trying to start a new war by assassinating a top Hezbollah commander and warned it would be a battle the Jewish state would lose. Israel has denied involvement in the Feb. 12 car bombing in Syria that killed Imad Mughniyeh.

The secretary-general's report focused on implementation of the U.N. cease-fire resolution that ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in August 2006. The resolution reiterates a call for the disarming of all militias and bans arms transfers to them.

"Reports of Hezbollah rearming are a cause of great concern, posing serious challenges to the sovereignty, stability and independence of Lebanon," Ban said.

He told the council he continues to believe that the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militias must be part of a Lebanese-led political process that would fully restore the government's authority throughout the country. He expressed regret "that the persistent deterioration of the political climate and the prolonged deadlock" over the election of a new Lebanese president have made it impossible to deal with the disarmament issue.

In his last report to the council in late October, Ban alleged that Hezbollah had rearmed with new long-range rockets capable of hitting Tel Aviv and tripled its arsenal of C-802 land-to-sea missiles since the 2006 war. He also drew attention to alleged breaches of the arms embargo and the transfer of sophisticated weapons from Iran and Syria — both strong backers of Hezbollah — across the Lebanon-Syria border.

Syria disputed the claim countering that the allegations of weapons smuggling are motivated by political rather than security considerations, Ban said, but Hezbollah's leaders have acknowledged on several occasions that their military capacity had been replenished since the war with Israel.

"I, therefore, remain concerned that this border remains vulnerable to such breaches, which would represent serious violations of the resolution and constitute a significant threat to the stability and security of Lebanon," he said.

After the 2006 war, a beefed-up U.N. force was stationed in south Lebanon, partially to keep Hezbollah from smuggling weapons into the area.

In Monday's report, Ban said, Israel maintains that Hezbollah "is significantly rebuilding its military presence" inside the U.N.'s area of operations. But he said U.N. and Lebanese forces have found no evidence so far of new infrastructure.

"In addition to information provided in previous reports, the government of Israel states that Hezbollah's arsenal includes some 10,000 long-range rockets, in addition to some 20,000 short-range rockets," the secretary-general said.

He said Hezbollah denies transferring weapons to the area where the U.N. force is deployed — a move that would violate the 2006 resolution.

Before the war, Israel estimates that Hezbollah had 13,000 rockets deployed. During the war, Hezbollah bombarded Israel with nearly 4,000 rockets. The rockets struck as far south as Hadera, 30 miles north of Tel Aviv.

Since the war, Nasrallah has boasted his group possesses an arsenal of rockets that can reach all of Israel, including the main metropolis of Tel Aviv. Shortly after the war, he said the guerrillas had 33,000 rockets.

In the report, Ban also expressed concern that Israeli air violations continue unabated "without any regard for the levels of tension and anger that these actions trigger on the ground."

What of March 8th?

The March 8th Coalition in Lebanon is the pro-Syrian political front. On March 8th 2005, Hezbollah and company staged massive protests in favor of the Syrian presence in Lebanon. March 8th is also the anniversary of the military coup that brought the Baathist Assad regime to power in Damascus.

March 8 + FPM

The March 8 political coalition is named after the pro-Syrian rally held on that date in 2005, organized by Hizbullah and presided over by Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbullah’s secretary-general. The March 8 rally was the first street rally by pro-Syrian Lebanese following a series of anti-Syrian demonstrations sparked by the assassination on February 14, 2005 of Rafik Hariri, a former Lebanese prime minister.

The March 8 coalition is dominated by Hizbullah and the Amal Movement, headed by parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri. Long-time rivals for the heart of Lebanon’s Shia community, Hizbullah and Amal formed a strategic alliance prior to the May-June 2005 parliamentary elections to ward off anticipated calls for the dismantling of the former’s military wing. Although the Shia of Hizbullah and Amal comprise the majority in the March 8 coalition, there are also Christians, Sunnis and Druze. The main Christian component of March 8 is the Free Patriotic Movement led by General Michel Aoun, a former Lebanese army commander who returned to Lebanon in April 2005 from self-imposed exile in France where he had spent the previous 14 years. Once one of Syria’s staunchest critics, General Aoun found himself alienated by the March 14 coalition upon his return to Lebanon and instead moved closer to pro-Syrian politicians and parties. In February 2006, General Aoun signed a memorandum of understanding with Hizbullah, heralding a political alliance which helped strengthen the March 8 opposition bloc and diminish the impression that it was chiefly Shia in nature.

Other main figures in the March 8 coalition include Omar Karami, a former prime minister from Tripoli, Suleiman Frangieh, a former cabinet minister and heir to a Maronite political dynasty in northern Lebanon, and Talal Arslan, a Druze rival to Walid Jumblatt.

Israel buys supply of pills to protect against nuclear radiation

By Shahar Ilan, Haaretz Correspondent

Defense establishment officials reported on Sunday that Israel has recently purchased a new supply of "Logol" pills against nuclear radiation.

The pills were first experimentally distributed in 2004 to residents of Arad and Yavneh in southern Israel, and were met with strong opposition from the mayors of these Negev towns.

The initiative to repurchase the pills was reported by officials on Sunday as part of a visiting delegation of Knesset Members to the Soreq Nuclear Research Center, located southeast of Dimona.

However, the defense establishment is still mulling whether to redistribute the pills to residents of communities located near the nuclear reactor or store them away for the time being.

Dr. Dan Berkovits, from the Soreq Nuclear Research Center, said during Sunday's visit to the site that an electrical particle accelerator will be activated March 10, and is supposed to take over all the functions currently being done by the Soreq reactor, including nuclear medicine and aviation.

"If Israel manages to adhere to the schedule, it would be the first country to replace a nuclear reactor with a particle accelerator," Berkovits said. However, he did not comment on whether the reactor would be shut down because of the new accelerator.

MK Ophir Pines-Paz, head of the Knesset's Interior Committee, said that the accelerator marks a "step in the right direction."

Cabinet decides to maintain Gaza ops until rockets stop
By JPOST.COM STAFF

The government will act in an "ongoing and consistent" manner in order to put an end to rocket attacks and other terrorist activity from the Gaza Strip, the Security Cabinet decided Wednesday in a special meeting to debate the response to ongoing rocket attacks on Ashkelon and the western Negev.

The ministers also decided that it would coordinate with various elements, including Egypt, in order to weaken the Hamas government without creating a humanitarian crisis.

Israel, they decided, will continue to further peace efforts while maintaining operational freedom to conduct counter-terrorism measures and focusing on hasbara efforts to bolster Israel's media image.

The home front was also addressed during the meeting, with ministers deciding to divert attention towards providing further protection for Israel citizens who are within the range of the rockets.

According to Israel Radio, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz demanded that the IDF be sent on a large-scale operation to "crumble Hamas but was overruled by the rest of the forum."

Vice Premier Haim Ramon abstained, claiming that the resolution was inadequate. Israel, he said, should declare a unilateral ceasefire, and announce that in the case of a Kassam attack the IDF will open fire on the source and Gaza will be cut off from all supplies, including gas and electricity.

Three Kassam rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel late Wednesday morning during the Security Cabinet discussion.

One of the rockets fell in the western Negev, while the other two hit open areas south of Ashkelon. There were no casualties or damage.

Israel will continue its operations in the Gaza Strip so long as rocket attacks from the territory continue, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said during the meeting, according to an Army Radio report.

Late Tuesday night IAF aircraft fired at a number of Kassam launchers that were pointed at Israel. The pilots confirmed that the launchers were hit, Army Radio reported.
