Montel Williams Loses Job after Defending Troops on Fox News (transcript included)

Montel Williams was on Fox and Friends and was asked to comment on the death of Heath Ledger. He told the hosts he was "repulsed by all the coverage". He then went on to ask them if they knew how many people have died in Iraq since January 1. He said they're going to spend 15 minutes talking about Heath Ledger and he hasn't seen one name of a soldier when those guys are over there dying so they can all sit there and do what they do.

Bravo Montel! Someone who calls it like it is. One actor has become an 'icon' (that's what the host called Heath) - yet the real heroes are our soldiers and no one cares when they die or mentions them by name. He was right on.

Watch it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3Spcq6Uzs

ETA: for those who can't access youtube the transcript has been posted in post 11 below

At the end of the clip, they said they'd be right back with more Montel, but apparently Montel was not on when they returned.

Next thing you know - FOX cancels Montel's show. After 17 years on the air.

Coincedence?

And in this article in Variety that discusses this cancellation, they say Montel calls it quits. Calls it quits? He was FIRED. :shk:

Montel Williams calls it quits
Talkshow ends production after 17 years
By CYNTHIA LITTLETON

Montel Williams is calling it a wrap after 17 years in daytime.

CBS TV Distribution confirmed Wednesday it will end production on the syndicated yakker at the end of this season. CBS plans to offer stations a "Best of Montel" package for the fall that will feature segs from throughout the show's run.

Fate of "The Montel Williams Show" was sealed when key Fox-owned stations opted not to renew it for the 2008-09 season. But a number of other stations had cleared the show for next season, prompting CBS to offer the "Best of" package. The rerun package is sold on an all-cash basis, which is a boon to stations that had been handing over 3½ minutes of barter ad time per seg to CBS for the firstrun episodes.

"Stations continue to embrace Montel and the message of social responsibility that has been the cornerstone of his show," said CBS TV Distribution prexy and chief operating officer John Nogawski.

Williams, a former military officer, launched his yakker in New York and a handful of other markets in 1991. Show was picked up for national distribution by Viacom the following year.

Just so some of you will realize, Williams gave up a career in the Naval reserves as an Intell officer due to his sickness(I forget what if it is Parkinson's, or MS .) He most likely was talking about using the death count asa propoganda thing but was truely irritated the media is more concenrned with a 28year junkie than those brave kids in Iraq.

Zinnia,

From what I read, his show is produced by CBS and syndicated to whichever network in a city picks it up (ABC in your area) - but when FOX backed out - CBS had to cancel the production. I guess monetarily FOX's payment is needed to make the show feasible.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'using the death count as propoganda' but it was most definitely not an anti-war sentiment he was spouting. He was defending our armed forces and making no comments or inunendos about the rightness or wrongness of the war.

He was incensed that the media concentrates on ONE ACTOR who died, treating him like he was some sort of hero, but no one talks about the death of our soldiers - who are the true heroes, who make it possible for democracy to continue, for them (the Fox hosts) to even be on the air.

Watch the youtube video - it's only 3minutes, linked in the first post.

PS - he had MS.

HD,that's the way I took it also.I guess I read T.P.'s reply too quickly,because I agree Montel's statements were'nt anti-war.

On second thought, I said:

and making no comments or inunendos about the rightness or wrongness of the war.

and that may not be accurate. He said the soldiers were defending our democracy, making it possible for shows like the Fox one to even be possible. If anything, that sounds more like a pro-war innuendo to me. :shr:

After Rosie O'Donnell said all kinds of things about the war and the troops on air - all of them anti-war - the only reason she left the View and ABC was because they wanted to extend her contract (and she didn't want a 3 year deal)*. And as soon as she left, she was given offers by NBC and CBS for a show*.

Montel defends our troops, and he's basically fired.

Is free speech on commercial TV only for certain speech?

Did anyone notice that they don't talk about the war much anymore on tv? Are there any inbedded newscasters or any journalists reporting from Iraq?

Already did - tuned them out. I boycotted Fox when they censored Ron Paul.
The reruns of the debate were edited to exclude Ron Paul.
I saw the clip of Montel prior to this thread being started and said "Way To Go, Montel".

I have sent emails out to everyone of Fox sponsors and boycotted them as well.

I hope Fox & Cnn both fade into never never land.

Here's a transcript of the show for those whose internets are too slow to access youtube or who are at work.

FROM

(Fair Use Applies)

Fox Stooge #3: "Was the pressure of stardom too much for the young actor (Heath Ledger)? Someone who knows how it can be under the glare of the celebrity microscope is Montel Williams who joins us in the studio this morning."

All Stooges: "Yeaah! (etc.)"

Montel: "Good morning; thanks for having me."

Fox Stooge #3: "It's good to have you here, boy we talk about a tragic situation - Heath Ledger - weigh in on that for us."

Montel: "I gotta tell you, my heart goes out to his family, but I have been repulsed, honestly, by all the coverage; and here's a question I have: watch this. How many people have died in Iraq since January 1st?"

Fox Stooge #1: "It's about, it's about twenty."

Montel: "No. It's not about. It is twenty-eight."

Fox Stooge #1: "Excuse me - "

Montel: "I say it that way because we're gonna spend fifteen minutes talking about this. I've not seen one death, one name of a soldier, one person who allows us to do this, and you're in the military (referring to one of the fox stooges); we're the ones who defend this democracy. Those guys are over there dying, and we're gonna sit here and speculate about a young man who passed away, who's somebody's child, who's somebody's father, has not even been buried yet, and I think it's gone way too far."

Fox Stooge #2: "But why do we do that as a society? I mean - "

Montel: "Because it [unclear] this appetite to bring on ratings. That what it is. We know it. We know it as a fact; let's be honest about it."

Fox Stooge #2: "Of course it's ratings, but it's the appetite - we're feeding the beast - "

Montel: "Yea, well, cart before the horse - horse before the cart - I don't know who drives it. I think right now if we woke up this morning and instead of talking about Heath Ledger we talked about the troop who died last night by the IED - "

Fox Stooge #1: "Montel, look, we have numbers..I'm mean look..I..I..I..It's kind of a sad reality, though; troops have been dying in Iraq since March of 2003 correct?"

Montel: "And we don't talk about them."

Fox Stooge #1: "Well, I mean, look, we talk about the war plenty. I was actually embedded. I was there for the invasion. I mean, we, I think everybody in this country knows we're at war."

Montel: "Nobody in this country knows who died yesterday. And if I know about Heath, I wanna know about the troop."

Stooges 1 & 2: (chatter)

Fox Stooge #3: "We talk about Heath because he was an icon. He was someone that really stood out - "

Montel: "And I admire him. My heart goes out to him. I didn't know him. And there are alot of people; yesterday, probably in this country, another four-hundred people passed away. I don't know any of them."

Fox Stooge #1: "Is there any realistic way to talk about four-hundred people who died individually? I mean - "

Montel: "All of the troops yesterday, and I'm sorry, let's have this discussion about Heath Ledger, but I wanna tell America: twenty-eight troops died since January 1st. That's what I wanna talk about, for me. Now, I mean, you guys can do it if you want; it's cool. I'm not gonna knock you. Talk about it if that's part of what you do, and that's part of what we need for ratings. I don't need 'em (ratings).

Fox Stooge #1: "Tell us about one of the troops who died since January 1st that [unclear] - "

Montel: "The only story I heard about was two days ago, while I was taping, was the IED that went off beside a truck. It was going through, troops got out supposedly took a look, talked to one of the Iraqi soldiers that was nearby, and look, I don't know the name. I don't know the name, so I'm as disgusted with myself this morning. I got up and searched; yesterday I searched I [unsure] the number everday, and I didn't find the name this morning. I looked up on casualties of war; they didn't give me the name, today."

Fox Stooge #3: "We're talking to Montel Williams about a situation going on right now, Heath Ledger, uh...he also has a book called Living Well, we're gonna talk about it in just a few moments. We'll have more with Montel in just a moment."

Montel Williams Loses Job after Defending Troops on Fox News
by Brandon Friedman
Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 11:39:14 PM PST

For just over three minutes on Saturday morning, TV talk show host Montel Williams owned the hosts of Fox and Friends. A former Marine and Naval officer, Montel lectured the stunned hosts on the stupidity of spending air time on the death of Heath Ledger, rather than covering the war in Iraq. It was a spectacle rarely seen on live cable television, as Montel exposed and condemned both tabloid "news" shows and much of American culture for what they have each become: shallow and greedy.

Three minutes into this awkward segment on Fox, one host cut off Montel in order to go to a commercial. Montel did not return after the break. Four days later, after 17 years as a television host, Montel lost his job. Variety reported on Wednesday that the fate of "The Montel Williams Show" was sealed when key Fox-owned stations opted not to renew it for the 2008-09 season.

I have no idea whether Montel already knew his show wasn’t going to be renewed, and thus felt emboldened to cut loose on the air, or whether his firing was a result of his actions on Saturday. Either way, Montel Williams exhibited courage this week that few in the television industry ever will. And for that, American troops around the world stand with him. We support him not only because he stood up for the troops, but because he did it on Fox News—a station that has done more damage to the U.S. military since 9/11 than any other.

Montel Williams is an American patriot. Though he left the military years ago, he has never forgotten "his" troops.

For that we salute and thank you, Montel. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do next.

And for those who want to know more about Montel:

Excerpts are taken from this article:
http://blacknews.com/pr/montel_williams_show_ends101.html
(Fair Use Applies)

-Mr. Williams’ concern for the welfare of his guests inspired the show’s After-Care Program, which began in 1992 and has since arranged for hundreds of people to attend psychological counseling sessions, weight-loss and eating disorder programs, and drug rehabilitation centers after they appear on the show.

-For example, he has conducted interviews in federal prisons and has been on the scene of recent American tragedies such as Ground Zero after 9/11 and throughout the Gulf Coast after hurricane Katrina. On site in the Gulf Coast, Mr. Williams spent several days gathering first person stories from survivors of the hurricane, visiting homes and shelters. Mr. Williams later revisited the area with executives from FUBU, with whom he distributed $1 million dollars worth of clothing throughout the ravaged area.

-In addition to his daily talk show, Mr. Williams has appeared in several high-profile projects. In January, 2006, Mr. Williams became the national spokesman for The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA), a patient assistance clearinghouse program which has matched more than 1.2 million Americans to public and private patient assistance programs providing them with free or nearly free medicines. He has appeared in a series of PPA television commercials and has embarked on a countrywide speaking tour to educate the public on PPA programs.

Mr. Williams enjoys acting and performs whenever his schedule permits. Over the past few years, viewers may have seen him on hit television programs including "All My Children," "American Dreams" and "JAG." He is very proud of his appearance off-Broadway in "The Exonerated" which tells the true stories of six innocent survivors on death row. In 2003, he performed in a special version of the play with Aidan Quinn and Mia Farrow in front of 900 lawyers at the American Bar Association's annual meeting.

Mr. Williams is also an accomplished author who has published six books to date. His New York Times best-selling autobiography, "Climbing Higher," was published in January 2004 and details his struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. This intensely personal story, which follows his diagnosis through his darkest days of despair, tells of his ultimate acceptance of his disease. In the book, Mr. Williams addresses issues of broad importance, such as medical marijuana and the cost of state-of-the-art drugs. He also published the New York Times best-selling fitness book titled "BodyChange," which he co-authored with expert Wini Linguvic, and authored the motivational autobiography "Mountain, Get Out of My Way," also a New York Times best-seller.

When he was diagnosed with MS in 1999, Mr. Williams made a pledge to use his celebrity to find a cure. Because of his unique position, he has had access to the latest research being conducted around the world. True to his word, he established The Montel Williams MS Foundation in 2000 to further the scientific study of MS, provide financial assistance to select organizations and institutions conducting research, raise national awareness, and educate the public. In a short time, the organization has reached several milestones: It has granted over $1 million dollars to research; it has supported a study done at The Karolinska Institute in Sweden which discovered an MS gene; and it is producing its first major public event – a bike-a-thon – to be held on September 30, 2006, in Sag Harbor, N.Y. For more information on the foundation or events, please log onto www.montelms.org.

One of Mr. Williams' key beliefs is that "success is determined by what you give back to others," which is why he has worked actively with a variety of charitable organizations throughout the years. (For details, please see his list of Distinctive Achievements.)

- Mr. Williams began his professional career in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974 when he enlisted in his hometown of Baltimore after graduating high school. After six months, he was meritoriously promoted twice, and in 1975, became the first black Marine selected to the Naval Academy Prep School who then went on to graduate from the Naval Academy.

- Upon graduation from Prep School, Mr. Williams received a presidential appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he studied Mandarin Chinese, and graduated with a degree in General Engineering and a minor in International Security Affairs. He was then selected as special duty intelligence officer, specializing in cryptology.

-Honorably decorated, Mr. Williams has received numerous awards and distinctions throughout his naval career, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, two Navy Expeditionary Medals, two Humanitarian Service Medals, a Navy Achievement Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals and two Meritorious Service Awards - the latter of which is rarely awarded twice.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that it's not so much that some blacks don't want to be conservative as it is they aren't allowed to be conservative. It's almost as if the media will slap them down and "put them back in their place" so to speak.

I am so disgusted with Fox News! I'm sure that the other news channels are nearly as corrupt, but Fox News is blatantly corrupt. Their lack of professional behavior and failure to make even the remotest apology for the same is astounding!

I've blogged the article and video on my personal website. My friends and family are probably getting sick of me slamming Fox News - but just maybe they will start giving a damn about the mindless babble being spoon fed to the American public.

One Day Closer
I took my cable boxes back to the company and cancelled cable back in June of 2005 and haven't missed it one bit - most of the programs I really like are on the internet and am enjoying more reading and real people again.

It felt good to cut them off and stop giving them almost $100 a month to feed their terrible programming.

The deciding factor for me was when the Supreme Court ruled that governments - from city to state could take private property from one citizen and give it to another if the latter could make more money with the property for the 'people' and Fox or CNN didn't do more than a blip on their programs while covering another movie star's traumas.

It was clear their agenda is to entertain the masses with gossip and soap operas while they stripped us of all the privileges our forefathers gave their blood for.

The least I could do was stop contributing to their budgets.
