NEW CANCER TREATMENT CHOICES - You don't have to accept chemo and radiation anymore!

expose'

The Pulse......
After reading about Mike 9or10's decision to forego any treatment because he was under the impression (probably by his oncologist) that his only options were chemotherapy and radiation......I feel it's important that people KNOW that times have changed and there are many new options that spare you the damaging side effects of chemo and radiation!

I have met literally hundreds of people - from all around the nation - over the past year during my cancer adventure. All of them have received a hopeless prognosis (doctors idea of your chances for survival..) from their hometown oncologists.
Even in Seattle - where we have the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research center - people are still being given the standard - failed and damaging treatment options - with no mention of the newer and safer options! Why? Because the older options produce more money right now and cost these centers more money to certify their oncologist in the newer treatments.

Many oncologists believe these newer treatments are still in the experiemental stages or in phase 3 trials - but they are not. They are readily being given and offered to those who find the right cancer treatment centers.

CANCER IS THE ONE CONDITION WHERE YOU SHOULD ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION!!

I am amazed at how manipulative local oncologists are with their patients in the beginning phases of diagnosis. They follow a psychological protocal - first they scare the crap out of the patient - this helps to create control over the patients decision making process for the next step - which is usually to rush the patient into chemo, surgery and/or radiation. The oncologists will be compassionate and sympathetic and will usually try to enlist the aid of the patients family in getting their way. :shk: The oncologists may tell you that you are going to die but they will make you comfortable...They offer no information about your cancer - other than it's bad. They can't tell you where it came from, the national statistics on survival, the newest treatments, etc....They will avoid these conversations... They rush you into expensive treatment - knowing that the standard chemo's and radiation will be what ends up killing you....:shr: They know no other way to deal with cancer...

THERE ARE NEWER CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS EVERYWHERE!

Offering the newest technologies, treatments, and safer variations of the older style treatments.

In the past few years there has been such an increase in cancer treatment options. These new treatments are available to cancer patients NOW.. Here are some examples:

Tarceva : an antibody type pill that was originally created for non-small cell lung cancers and Pancreatic cancers but is now being used on numerous types of cancers. You take one pill a day and the side effects are : rash - usually on the face, neck, mild diarrhea - in some people not all,.. This medicine binds to a certain receptor site in the cancer cell blocking it's action..It only works on those with a certain gene mutation.....BUT - they have found that it also works on more people (even those without the Mutation ) if they add Celebrex to the treatment.

Celebrex : Yes - this is the anti-inflammatory prescription NSAID that's usually prescribed for arthritis. Cancer researchers have found that the Cox 2 enzyme plays a big role in cancer. The Cox 2 enzyme - when over-expressed causes all kinds of trouble and can be one of the keys that determine if your cancer becomes malignant or not. They found that adding Celebrex to many cancer treatment regiments has increased the effectiveness of the treatment! They even found that taking this pill alone has reversed cancer! It also acts as an anti-angiogenesis - which stops the cancer from producing it's own blood vessles so it can't continue to grow.

Avastin: Is an anti-Angiogensis -it stops the cancers ability to form blood vessels
- so it dies.

Chemo : There are fractionated dose chemotherapies that don't burden your body as the old time standard chemos do. This is lower dose or smaller doses over a longer time period so your body doesn't break down and has time to heal. There are newer chemo drugs that don't produce many of the standard side effects like hair loss, weight loss and neuropathy.

Radiation: There are several new radiation machines which are designed to target only the cancer! One of these machines is called Tomotherapy. It is able to pinpoint the cancer and bypass the healthy cells and bone. Most hosptials around the country don't have this machine and wont upgrade to it because they don't want the expense.... I think Tomo has a website www.tomotherapy.com where they have a map of the US that shows where their machines are currently located.

Radio Frequency Ablation: This is cool because it is so close to some of the inventions of old time like the Rife machine. This uses Radio frequency to obliterate tumors in hard places like the lungs and liver. It is fast becoming the difference between life and death for many patients who suffer from primary lung and liver cancers and even those with metastatic disease there.

Monoclonal Antibody treatments
Cyber Knife surgery
Tumor seeding
etc...
Everything I've listed above is part of the new conventional cancer treatments. It's not alternative medicine at all. These and more are available to patients NOW!

Please please please! Before you accept any prognosis from your doctor and get rushed into something that will either remove your quality of life or kill you - GET A SECOND OPINION!

The Cancer Treatment Centers of America

MD Anderson

I know the Cancer treatment Centers of America will work with your insurance to pay for a flight for you and a loved one to one of their facilities so you can be evaluated , scanned, and given the straight scoop on your cancer and several treatment options - that are always your decision to accept or pass on! I know they also have hotel rooms in their facilities that they allow you to stay at and bill you later for ($30.00 per night!) . I'm not sure about MD Anderson's policy on this...

There may be more of these types of newer treatments centers in the US now...Please do your homework and don't allow yourself and your loved ones to be manipulated into terror to make the wrong choices.....

To those of you who have not been diagnosed with cancer - my advice is to get good medical insurance now. It will be a huge factor in receiving the best and newest treatments out there.

Also - all being said about conventional treatments - Please consider alternative and complimentary treatments as well! Many of the newer conventional treatment have their origins in what was considered "alternative" not too long ago... Many of the alternative treatments are on the right track.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
Starting in the last year and a half and ending about nine months ago I underwent a combination/sequence of chemo (Fludarabine) and two monoclonal antibodies (Rituxan and Campath) as part of a clinical trial for treatments for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Yes, the treatments did make me a bit tired but when I drove myself home from an infusion session in the midst of treatment week to find myself confronted by a large tree down across the driveway I was able to get out the chainsaw and peavy and deal with it....

Clearly there is chemo and CHEMO!. None of them is much fun but many types nowadays are a piece of cake compared to the treatments available just a decade ago. The monoclonal antibodies are not really chemo at all but usually explained that way to the lay folks because it's simpler for them.

The Pulse......
I am like Mike 9or 10.
I have refused chemo and radiation and only opted for surgery.
My inital prognosis was 6 to 12 months to live without chemo and radiation treatment and 3 years with treatment. :shk: It's been 18 months now since my diagnosis and I'm still here. :D I still go shopping and get the kids to school. I still look the same and have even gained a little weight...(this is good for a cancer patient..--I keep telling myself...;) )

After 2 surgeries my cancer came back. The little sh$t cancer! My oncologist at the cancer treatment centers of America knows I am adamant about no chemo..So - she did some research into other options for me. She decided to try Tarceva because it's been used on squamous cell carcinoma which is what I have in my lymph nodes... I took it for a month but they couldn't tell if it was stopping the tumor from growing. I suggested to her that we add the Celebrex to my treatment after I had read some recent research on it. She also knew of the research and agreed to add it. I just got back from my check up and scans in Tulsa to see if the Tarceva and Celebrex combo stopped , shrunk or did nothing to my cancer.

My tumor did not grow at all over the past month on this combination! :D If it's not growing then it can die. I'm hoping it's dying. I'm thrilled that it stopped doing anything!

Some people have expressed that my cancer wouldn't have come back if I had taken the standard chemo and radiation...but that's just not true. Chemo many times can arrest the current cancer but the cells that escape become drug resistant and very aggressive and usually head to your brain.... In other words - with chemo it's a good chance the cancer would have spread anyway - and I would have exhausted my options for further treatment because of the drug resistance of the chemo treated cancer cells. Not to mention how ill and weak I would have been after the chemo that would not have allowed me to live a normal life.

I have had 18 months of a fairly normal life - with the exeption of a few months recovery from the surgeries. Cancer patients undergoing the older chemos many times have months of recovery from chemo - with hair loss, massive weight loss, neuropathy in the hands and feet, anemia, etc...only to have a couple of months before their cancer returns with a vengence!:(

I've seen this played out over and over...

I may die from this - but I'm doing everything I can and have a team of doctors who actually listen to me and accept my ideas for therapy.

I just want people to know that there are some incredible new treatments out there that they may never hear of from their hometown oncologists...

OXYGEN THERAPIES FOR CANDIDA, CANCER, AIDS, AND OTHER DISEASES
by: McCabe, Ed

Mr. Ed McCabe is an investigative journalist and leading expert on the subject of oxygen therapies for degenerative disease. During his investigation and research into the subject, he has visited many oxygen therapy clinics throughout the world, interviewing doctors who administer oxygen therapy, and thousands of people who have successfully used it. He is the founder and executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Oxygen Therapies, an organization dedicated to research and education. He writes a syndicated newspaper column and national magazine articles. His bestselling book, Oxygen Therapies, is now in its 32nd printing, and has sold over 90,000 copies. It describes all known ways of using special forms of oxygen in the body to maintain health and treat disease. His new book is called Ozone Versus AIDS.

In my book, Oxygen Therapies, I list about 30 or 40 different oxygen therapies: hydrogen peroxide, ozone, Homozone, stabilized oxygen products, deep breathing, yoga, and pranic exercises. It goes all the way from free to very expensive in a clinic somewhere. But somewhere in between you can find something. Every single person can benefit.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

The most common oxygen therapy is hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide that is used is not the kind you buy in the drug store which has heavy metals, phenols and quinones in it that are poisonous. Thirty-five percent food grade hydrogen peroxide is used. In the eighteenth century, doctors prescribed food grade hydrogen peroxide diluted in water to people to drink. I have been to clinics where AIDS patients use food grade hydrogen peroxide for bathing. They take a gallon of 35% hydrogen peroxide, and dilute it in a bathtub filled with 10 to 20 gallons of water. Thirty-five percent hydrogen peroxide is so strong you can't put it directly on your skin or drink it except when properly diluted. Otherwise, it will burn you. Three percent peroxide can be sprayed on food, or put 1 tbsp. in a liter of water and soak your vegetables for 20 minutes. You can use it to spray your body after a shower. It absorbs right into the skin. This peroxide is given by doctors, injected into the body at 0.0375% (as an upper limit of concentration) which is very dilute. If you put a lot of peroxide in a vein, you will turn it sclerotic; it will turn brittle and break and burn. You don't want that. So there are established protocols for using oxygen therapy. The protocols are available from IBOM and ECHO. Hydrogen peroxide is H2O plus O1. The same singlet of oxygen (O1) that ozone delivers to the body, is also produced by hydrogen peroxide. O1 is the beneficial free radical singlet oxygen that scavenges all the other free radicals, burns up all the toxicity and destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi, pathogens, parasites, microplasms, and microtoxins on contact. You know when you pour hydrogen peroxide in a cut, it bubbles up and it kills the bacteria. Because the microorganisms are negatively charged and O1 is positively charged, it just burns them up and oxidizes them. So that is how your immune system is going to work. Your immune system runs on oxygen. The white blood cells come along and engulf and digest the bacteria. How does it kill it? There is an area of the lymphocyte known as the peroxisome which makes hydrogen peroxide. Every single cell in your body protects itself against bacteria and viruses by making its own hydrogen peroxide. If you have insufficient oxygen, your immune system will not be able to make sufficient hydrogen peroxide which means you will have a chronic deficit of hydrogen peroxide at the cellular level. When you give the body ozone, hydrogen peroxide or stabilized oxygen, or the magnesium peroxide, it signals it to make hydrogen peroxide. When we use oxygen therapies, we just return to you what is missing. Your body heals itself and gets rid of the toxicity.

OZONE

Ozone is nothing more than oxygen, O2, turned into O3. Ozone is found in nature. Electrical storms produce ozone. Ultraviolet light from the sun converts the layer of oxygen around the earth into ozone. When you bubble ozone (O1) through water (H2O), you turn water into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The premiere water sterilization technique used by municipalities all over the world is bubbling ozone through water. It doesn't hurt anything else but it kills all the bacteria, viruses, fungi and pathogens. Ozone is harmless to the human cells when correctly used. However, there are different types of ozone. Ozone electrically produced from air is highly toxic. But, ozone from pure oxygen isn't. The main difference is that air-produced ozone has nitric acid, nitrous oxides and other nitrogen compounds present with it, but the pure oxygen ozone doesn't. Even negative ion generators produce ozone and form minute amounts of nitric acid. The contaminants are the toxins, not the ozone used at proper levels. There is a water purifier that outputs a medical grade of ozone. You can apply ozone to yourself at home, either injecting it if you are trained to do this, or by using rectal insufflation. It is absorbed into the blood and carried all over the body. It takes months of flooding the body with oxygen. And people work up to that level very slowly, because if you rush it, if you put too much oxygen in, you are going to stir up so much garbage that the organs of elimination will plug up or become irritated. So there are protocols. There are established dosages. You have to spend time doing this therapy. For example, people who have AIDS have to go to a clinic if they want to sero convert to HIV negative. They have six weeks of IV injections with the ozone therapy on a daily basis.

STABILIZED OXYGEN PRODUCTS

There are stabilized oxygen products, commercially available, about 12 brands of them including Aerox, and Aerobic 07, which are very inexpensive. I have interviewed people all over the world getting rid of every disease you can think of, and sports athletes using oxygen therapies to increase their endurance.

The more options the better. Different people react differently to Chemo treatment and it's not always a diminished quality of life result.

I really didn't want to say anything but for the last couple months I've been fighting Stage 4 colon cancer that's metastasized to over 50% the liver and, with the help of the chemo, am going to kick the cancers ass. We haven't gotten to regression yet but I know it's coming. Other than cold sensitivity I have none of the usual chemo symptoms and actually am hyper with excess energy and am doing even more physical activity than before. Not to mention my appetites increased two fold and I am gaining weight, despite quiting alcohol/beer. I'm too old to die young and too young to die now.... :D

2nd opinions are always good, I dismissed my first oncologist who was a arrogant putz and am with a very excellent oncologist now who is into integrative medicine.
Great and informative post expose' as with everything a good deal of it is attitude and mind over matter and your living proof. Thanks to everyone for all the excellent articles they are posting.

Though I would only go with a naturopathic approach.....

in any cancer treatment, my friend was given 6 years to live with her leukemia....this was 17 years ago.

Basically what she did was change her diet, exercise and focussed on doing nothing but what made her healthy. Food was the source of her nutrients, but also a small dose of a form of chemo, which never gave her any side effects.

This chemo type medicine which is now not working for her, has been replaced by an infusion of gamma globulins, which she calls her "goblins". She hasn't had it long enough to know if it working, but it is her last chance......there is no other treatment.

So.......anything which will make you healthy......is a good bet - and try to make your body as alkaline as possible, (which is what fresh fruits and veggies do), so that the cancer cells cannot replicate - they need an acidic environment to grow.

And don't give up.....keep searching for the person who can help you.....even if it sounds weird, or different, or not what the oncologist would like you to try.

Worrier King,

You are so right - that a large part of the battle is attitude! That's why I think a second opinion and looking for a doctor who will help you make decisions - not force you or intimidate you into their decisions for treatment - is so important!

It's so refreshing to see your post and your attitude about your current fight with cancer! :D As a society - we are so accustomed to speaking about cancer in hushed tones as though it were a sexually transmitted disease!! Or an immediate death sentence.... This attitude has played well for those in the cancer industry who just want to maintain the status quo on expensive and damaging old cancer treatments...

Basically what she did was change her diet, exercise and focussed on doing nothing but what made her healthy. Food was the source of her nutrients, but also a small dose of a form of chemo, which never gave her any side effects.

Laurane,

Leukemia and Lymphomas are the 2 cancers that respond to chemo well. I don't mean to dis all chemo's. Today - there are newer drugs - less damaging and newer techniques for administering them that spare you the horrible side effects.
One thing you stated was that she ate what made "her" healthy! This is so important because we get so wrapped up in what we are supposed to eat and drink and take over the counter - always afraid to eat or take something that makes us feel good unless it's on some prescribed list made by some so-called expert. You know what makes you feel good. You know what gives you heartburn or gas. You know what bloats you. These are not things that make you healthy - though they may be on some list of healthy items to eat... Eat foods that are nutritious and that you enjoy! If you like something - your mouth is going to make enzymes to breakdown the food in your mouth for better digestion
and more nutritional value. If you force yourself to eat some dry organic muck that is tasteless - it doesn't matter how "organic" it is - it wont be good for you.

I read somewhere recently that "T-regs" are going to be a big deal in cancer research. I see it mentioned in blueridges link..

The study focuses on immune system cells called regulatory T-cells (T-regs) and their effect on macrophages in test tubes.

Macrophages normally help the body get rid of threats. But under the sway of T-regs, macrophages act the opposite way. Instead of going on defense, the macrophages chill out, as if there were no cause for concern.

That process could open the door for tumor growth, note the researchers, who included Leonie Taams, PhD, of King's College London.

Immune System May Make or Break Cancer
Cancer Researchers Note Immune System's Role in Cancer Growth
By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDNov. 19, 2007 -- Cancer researchers today reported that the body's immune system may be the tipping point toward or away from cancer.

Their findings may help scientists develop new cancer treatments that harness the immune system's cancer-fighting powers.

Here's an overview of the studies, published in today's advance online editions of Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

'Startling' Findings
In Nature, scientists show that a healthy immune system may hold some cancers in check.

The results may pave the way for the development of new therapies to "convert cancer into a controllable chronic disease," write the researchers.

They injected a cancer-causing substance into mice. Some mice developed growing tumors, while other mice developed tumors that stayed small.

But those small, stable tumors started to grow when the scientists suppressed the mice's immune systems.

The bottom line: A healthy immune system helps prevent cancer, though it didn't stop every small tumor from growing.

The researchers included graduate student Catherine Koebel and Robert Schreiber, PhD, of the pathology and immunology department at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Their findings are "startling" and "demonstrate that considering cancer as a fatal disease is not always appropriate," writes Cornelius Melief, MD, PhD, in a Nature editorial.

Melief works at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Cancer Defies Immune System
Sometimes, cancer flies under the immune system's radar, a British study shows.

"We hope to be able to use this new knowledge about the relationship between regulatory T-cells and macrophages to find more effective treatments for tumors," Taams says in a news release.

and taking enzymes will also help with digestion, so the body can spend its energy healing itself.

As an aside to the enzymes thing......my husband took 3 super-enzymes with each meal for 5 weeks to help rebuild his lungs and he really noticed the difference in his energy level......and the lessening of phlegm as he digested his food (even the stuff he wasn't supposed to eat).

So if people with cancer used enzymes, maybe it would work the same way, to rebuild good cells, help with digestion so the body used the food more efficiently.

Interesting. When I read the thread title, I thought "Here we go again, some nut case pushing swamp scum or some other 'miracle cure'. I was relieved to see that you seem more serious and informed than that.

Right now, I'm dealing with recurrence of metastasized prostate cancer. I am not at all interested in the standard therapies for this event, most of whose side effects far outweigh the benefits. At this point, there are no curative therapies for me, only palliative therapies.

So I'm going to do some internet research and follow-up on your information, to see if there's anything there for me.

Thanks for providing the info.

Great info. Expose - -thank you for sharing - as well as all the others.

I know that quite a few Canadians have gone to Dr. Castillo's clinic. www.drcastillo.com Goto that site and make sure you click on testimonials. Folks have left their phone numbers so you can ask them their experience. I just read a letter from a lady in Alberta, Marlene Paulson , who said she is still doing well and goes back for regular checkups.
One of the modalities he uses is the Hoxey treatment - -you can find out more at www.hoxey.com .

nharrold,

Have you considered contacting one of the newer cancer treatment centers for a second look?
You can talk to them on line and explain your diagnosis and prognosis and maybe get some insight on the newer treatments.

Just about everyone I've met at the treatment center had been told by their hometown docs that their cancer was incurable and there was nothing more they could do - yet the treatment center gave them life again. I guess the only thing that you need is insurance. If you have that - they check it for you and let you know the next day if your insurance covers a visit to their facilities for a second opinion.

It doesn't hurt to try..:shr:

The episode was criticized for being just an episode...... worth remembering is when Dorothy told her doctor off in a way few of us have been able to do:

I don't know when you doctors lose your humanity, but you do. You know, if all of you, at the beginning of your careers could get very sick, and very scared for a while, you'd probably learn more than anything else. You better start listening to your patients. They need to be heard, they need care, they need compassion, they need attending to. You know, some day you're going to be on the other side of the table, and as angry as I am, and as angry I always will be, I still wish you a better doctor than you were to me.[11]

It is strange that so many doctors are surprised that patients sometimes are skeptical toward them ("when it came to polemics, they showed little sign of fatigue" - Dr Michael Fitzpatrick[12]) or that patients don't listen although "we've proven it over, and over, and over it's all in their heads" (American radio doctor Dean Edell).[13]

"Of course I can tell myself that the steering pulls to one side, you don't have to be a mechanic to see that!" the irritated doctor says. "Now, who's the expert here, I have fixed cars for 20 years", the mechanic says. "And I have been driving cars for 20 years, so I know very well how a car should behave!" the angry doctor says.
