Officials were today investigating a suspected case of bird flu on a South Norfolk poultry holding.</b>

While the case has not been confirmed, veterinary officials held a telephone conference with industry leaders this afternoon.

It is thought that veterinary staff were alerted to possible infection in poultry near Diss.

Officials at Defra were unable to comment but said that a statement would be made later today.

The last case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected in turkeys at a Bernard Matthews farm at Holton, near Halesworth, in early February. A total of 160,000 birds were slaughtered as a precaution.

Ironically, industry leaders were attending a poultry health meeting with senior officials at Defra (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs this afternoon.

More than 5,000 turkeys, ducks and geese are to be slaughtered after a outbreak of bird flu in Britain.

The case of H5 was discovered in Diss, Norfolk, but it is not known if it is the deadly N1 strain from Asia.

Movement of birds will be prohibited

It will be at least 24 hours before it is known if the flu H5N1.

Deputy chief vetinary officer Fred Landeg said: 'We need to determine if this the more serious flu. This seems to be a new introduction to the area.

'We are at the early stages of the investigation and everybody needs to be concerned.

'We are asking every poultry keeper to be vigilant and carry out good security measures.'

Five thousand turkeys are being slaughtered at a farm in Norfolk following an outbreak of bird flu, the government said today.</b>

The turkeys on the farm in Diss, on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk, have tested positive for the H5 strain of bird flu, according to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Tests are being carried out to see whether the turkeys have the notorious H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed 205 people since 2003 - mainly in Asia.

The infected farm also houses ducks and geese, which will also be slaughtered.
A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone are being established around the infected farm. Inside these zones bird movements will be restricted and all birds must be housed or otherwise isolated from contact with wild birds.

More details to follow.

FWIW dept; There are 17 news articles on the news feeds at the moment - but! They are, for the most part, repeating Moon's inital report!

I'll continue to check to see if there is anything new to report (The feeds update every five minutes and uses 29K sourses to draw from). :shk: And on a busy news event! It can drive a feller nuts! I'll tells yas! Just to try and stay current in a "fluid situation(s)"..

DEFRA has today confirmed avian (bird) flu in turkeys on a unit near Diss on the Norfolk/Suffolk border after preliminary tests were positive for the H5 strain.

The premises also contain ducks and geese. All birds on the premises will be slaughtered.

Full confirmation of results, including whether or not this is H5N1 bird flu and whether the strain is high or low pathogenic will follow.</b>

A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone are being established around the Infected Premises. Inside these zones bird movements will be restricted and all birds must be housed or otherwise isolated from contact with wild birds. DEFRA is also urgently considering with ornithological and other experts what wider measures may be needed.

All poultry keepers on the GB Poultry Register will be notified and the EU Commission has been informed.

Earlier this year in February, the UK saw its first H5N1 outbreak in a commercial poultry flock.
