Extreme Body Piercing - Branding - Scarification

July 19th, 2007 under Offbeat News
People far and wide have long used their bodies as canvases to express cultural identity, community status, connection to ancestors or gods — and to mark rites of passage or to ‘wear’ a permanent amulet.

Although tattoos and piercings are the most popular forms of body art, some more extreme forms are also practiced all over the world such as scarification, branding, implants and surgical alterations.

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival widely celebrated in Malaysia.Thai refers to the Tamil month of Thai in January and February. Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. The festival honors Subrahmanya — known also as Murugan — the Son of Siva and Parvati who defeated a demon with a spear.

The devotees walk carrying various types of kavadi (burdens), and pots of milk on their heads. But mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common while in a trance.
The vel kavadi is a form of portable altar decorated with peacock feathers and attached to the devotee through 108 vels pierced into the skin on the chest and back.

Scarification
In the U.S., scarification emerged in San Francisco as part of a new body-modification movement in the mid-1980’s. It was originally embraced by gay and lesbian subcultures, said Victoria Pitts, professor of sociology at the City University of New York in New York City, reports National Geographic.

But by the early 1990s, members of a neotribal, or ‘modern primitive’ movement began using scarification. “That movement was interested in reviving or reenacting indigenous body rituals from around the world — trying to get in touch with a more authentic or spiritual experience of the body.” Pitts said.

Over the last seven or eight years, Pitts said, scarification has become remarkably widespread in the U.S., Australia and across Europe, from London to Prague.
Scarification is done either by cutting repeatedly with a scalpel, using a cauterizing tool, or by ’strike branding,’ which is much like cattle branding.
After cleaning the area and stenciling on the design, the artist begins cutting or burning the skin until reaching the right depth and width. “It can take 15 minutes, but I’ve also done pieces that took eight hours over two days.” said Ryan Ouellette, a body-modification artist who owns Precision Body Arts in Nashua, New Hampshire.
There are several reasons for the growing popularity of scarification. Pitts feels that it’s partly spurred by a nostalgia for a different type of society.

“Industrial consumerist cultures are becoming more interested in what they might call primitive societies.” she said. “That’s not wholly new — it’s a fascination that’s centuries old.” The romantic idea of the exotic ethnic dates back to colonial times, she said.
“Someone stuck in L.A. traffic, wearing a tribal tattoo, has a cultural nostalgia for something we imagine we’ve lost.” Pitts said. “The problem is that we’re taking it upon ourselves to represent a whole range of indigenous cultures in ways that they may not agree with — or may violate sacred spiritual ritual.”
Some scarify merely to be different. “Tattooing has become old hat.” Hemingson said. “If you want to be on the cutting edge — and want to set yourself apart — you can do tongue splitting or scarification.”
Pitts argues that body modification is not really so strange within a culture where identity is often expressed through appearance — which in mainstream society includes fashion consumption, cosmetic surgery, and botox.
On the fringes of society, it’s tattooing, piercing, and scarification.
“Scarification definitely isn’t as popular as tattooing, and I don’t think it ever will be.” said Ouellette. “It still carries a stigma as something really bizarre.”
Branding
Branding is the process for which a white-hot item is used — typically a piece of metal in some particular shape — and pressed into the flesh so that it makes a serious burn and then a permanent scar.

Photo JasonMG5
In full-scale branding, the iron is heated hot enough and applied long enough that the resulting wound is a third degree burn, which destroys the nerve. These third-degree burns never regain sensitivity. It will make a silver scarred area in the shape of the third degree burn, due to destruction of the entire dermis layer of the skin. The surrounding skin will eventually fill in areas that haven’t been severely damaged, which takes years.
Implants
Implants are created by placing an object under the skin to create a design. An incision is made near the area the implant will be placed, then a pocket is made and the object is inserted. The incision is then stitched up.

Most commonly used materials are titanium, soft solid silicone, and Teflon. Other materials such as stainless steel can be used, but some people can develop an allergic reaction and reject the implant.

Another manifestation of judgment in a culture of death. What's amazing is they so freely admit the spiritual aspect, as though "god" is somehow impressed. I will agree that there are spirits involved, however. Expect more of the same in the future, and a corresponding decrease in the respect for life.

< Yes, I do look like that.
A piercing I can understand. I don't agree with it per se as I'm unpierced myself (allof my holes are naturally-occurring) but if you wanna put in an extrea earring, knock yourself out.

But there's a point when you're just being ridiculous. The piercing pics above are all ridiculous.

I'm the same way about tatoos - don't have or want one but if you want one have at you. Just don't expect me to think you're "normal" if you have all visible skin covered with ink.

I have a tattoo(hidden easily with my clothing on) as well as a tongue ring(again...if i dont show you then you wouldnt know it was there) and i find this disgusting. some piercings can be attractive, but these push the boundries to make me ill...i think it is a perfect example of 'attention whoring'

Wow! And looking at the headline I thought I'd have something
shocking to contribute with this:

mrspierce.jpg

For myself, I promised mom, long ago, that I would try to go out the same color,
and hopefully with the same number of holes, with which I came into this world.

As I've grown older, I have considered one exception to this promise:

To die in bed, at the age of 82, from a gunshot wound inflicted by a 22 yr. old jealous husband.

Well.....

I think it's pretty gross, but!

Their bodies, their decisions.

I can think of a lot worse things that people can do.....like the crazies who do things like that to unconsenting, innocent people rather than themselves.

I looked at a handful of the pics.

I'd have kept looking, only I don't know what I'd have done with all the vomit.

Man, I'd always be worried about getting them caught on something.

He heh! Two things occur to me.

As I am now a grandfather x 5 such silly things, once again, become important in life:
1. How in hell do they blow up a ballon for a kid?
and
Whether it's falling asleep on the couch, or simply drinking a glass of water,
2. Do they leak?

What's so great about being "normal?" All that really means is that there is nothing unique about you.

That being said, in the interest of full disclosure, I have no tattoos and the only piercings I had (one in each ear) grew over long ago.

In the area of unusual implants, a friend of mine had a rare earth magnet (coated in silicone) implanted in a finger. Some of the folks who have had this implant have reported being able to sense electromagnetic fields as a vibration or tingle in the area oft he implant. I suppose this one would fall into a more of a "functional" implant category, might even be useful.

Assuming, of course, that you don't hit the magnet hard enough to break it, in which case getting it out can be a mess

Just think of the fun you could have with a big, powerful electromagnet! Let the show begin!

I was thinking the same thing, may be one of the construction cranes kind and you just make a swipe over the street, think it would upset them.

In army basic training in 1956 we were counseled about tatoos befoe we got our first off-post liberty. One guy came back with a black panther on his left arm that was partiallly visable below his short sleeved shirts. He was roundly chewed out but probably sports that tatoo on his now 70 year old body. I personall never thouught that a tatoo was something that made a body appear better looking.

As for body piercings, I would never dishoner my body by doing something like that. My first experience with seeing people cut or mutilate their bodies was during Good Friday observances in the P.I. in 1960. I went to a certaain barrio in Angeles City near Clark AFB and observed men having deep cuts made in their back by a confederate using a piece of a brokan Coca Cola bottle. Thir backs would bleed and the individual, knon as a flagellante would then start walking, while wearing a black hood over his head. He carried a whip made from bamboo and in the fashion of a cat-o-nine tails that he whipped back and forth from one side of the body to another in front of him. The whip would be swung so that it his bleeding back was struck first on one side and than the other. As the whip became bloodier by the stroke the doplets of blood would be spread from one side to another. Bystanders were being spattered with blood and one American woman wearing a white dress as she moved about taking photographs, soon had a red polka dot dress.

Other penitents would be dragging a heavy cross behind them that they were bound to by cords at their wrists. It was a hot day and with the sandbag or other face covering the person could scarcely breathe. At the end of the line of march the penitents would be "crucified" and the post of the cross would be dropped in a hole while the penitent was suspended by the crossarm. Very few were held by nails and most were help by rough cords.

We were told that the penitents suffered little from the deep gashes on thei backs and most backs heed rapidly. SInce their faces were covered no one would likely know anyway.

A few weeks ago I was in a video store and I asked the clerk about a video. She was a young white female with two lip rings and dark lip stick. She also had a nose clip and a tongue piercing. I could barely understand her due to the large device sticking up from her tongue.

The photo of the person on post 13 is also in my photo file. I figured one day i might try to count the piercings.

Yee Haw! Fishing tackle! Or as my son calls them...walking tackle boxes. Remember who they are when SHTF. You might need to do some bartering.

Are those implants in those girls' chests in post #3 brass knuckles?

Reminds me of an old Dick Tracy story where a villain had a surgically implanted key, that he carried under his skin throughout the time he was in prison. Then, when he got out, he had an underworld doctor remove it, so he could use it to open a locker full of loot.

One of those guys reminds me of the punker with the body piercings, tattoos, and orange hair that got on a bus.

An old man kept staring at the punker. It finally got to bothering the kid and he asked, "what the hell you looking at, old man?"

The old man replied, "Years ago when I was in the navy, I got drunk and had sex with a parott. I was just trying to figure out if you were my son."

When I see photos like these, I always wonder what goes on in a person's mind that they are willing to disfigure their faces so badly. Of all the physical, your face is so YOU. I just can't understand why someone would do something like that to themselves.

My second thought is, "I wonder where they work?"

The Irish girl on American Idol had a husband with all those tats on his face and neck, and she had one, a sleeve they called it, all the way from her elbow to her shoulder. It really did distract me, and her husband kind of turned my stomach.

Its like looking at grafitti on a wall, only its your face.

Yep, that was what kept going through my mind as I looked at these-I've seen far worse, believe it or not. They are all lost souls, it's so sad. Did you see the girl with the brass knuckles in her chest? She looks like she's 10, her hands look even younger.

:screw: Yep, they're just like us...these poor sick freaks want to force us to accept their psychotic lifestyles? Good luck with that.

There are several reasons for the growing popularity of scarification. Pitts feels that it’s partly spurred by a nostalgia for a different type of society.
Nostalgia is a yearning for things past. She's saying without putting it into words, they are nostalgic for the pagan days, as in the days of Noah, I think.

My pity and prayers for them, my sympathies to their parents, my apologies to God that humanity can be so disrespectful to the bodies He gave them.

Tatoos, piercings and scarification in old cultures were records of deeds done, wars and tramas lived through...even Russian gangster tatoos tell their history.

But these modern mavels tell of nothing except the mix up of the mind of the person doing them...they signify nothing.
