There has been some confusion of late WRT advertising and sponsors on the board. So, for the sake of new folks, and as a refresher for old-timers, here are the definitive rules for Member advertising on TB....

Non-sponsors:
Members who want to advertise personal "stuff" for sale to the membership must post a thread in Swaps and Sales. In that thread, they are allowed to provide as much detail as they want to, including pictures. Then a "reference" thread may be posted on Main, where a BRIEF description of the item(s) for sale may be given, and a link to the SWAPS thread included.
Members who want to post Professional advertisements for their businesses may place modest-sized links and/or images in their SIG-lines which reference their website(s). They may not post specific ads about professional products or services without approval IN ADVANCE of the staff.

Sponsors:
Members who own businesses may ask for banner ads to be placed on TB. The banners must be uniformly sized and NOT animated (or only VERY slightly animated). All banners must be approved by staff. The rates for advertising banner ads on TB are available from me by PM'd request. Being a TB board sponsor allows the member(s) to post various "group/member buy" opportunity threads on Main. Note that these threads may be "stickied" to the top of the forum for a period upon the sponsor's request.
Sponsor product/service threads MAY NOT BE SPAMMED by other members who want to post alternative "stuff" to buy. Those members must post THEIR OWN THREADS, and may only do so if they ARE NOT affiliated with the product or business, unless they become a TB sponsor.
Non-sponsor members who persist in spamming sponsor product threads may be subject to disciplinary action up to revocation of membership.

PRIVATE Group buys organized by members:
We regularly allow Members to organize private group buys and post about those on Main. That is also allowed.

Personal services by members for members:
Members who have services to offer other members may post about those on Main. However, if those are "professional" services for which money changes hands, the rules specified above for businesses and sponsors apply.

NOTE: Members may not join TB for the sole purpose of advertising products or services. A sponsor is expected to contribute to the community through posting as well. TB2K gets about a million "hits" a day.
Now near as I can recall, the rules have always been approximately as stated above. Please refer to this thread in the future if you have questions. Note that this thread may NOT be used for a debating platform. This is "the way it is."
