TV show '24' question

DH and I have never watched the show '24'. For me it's been "too many books, too little time". But I am interested in watching tonight.

My question is - I know the new season starts a new "day" but would you need to know all the story lines and characters (other than Jack Bauer) to be able to know what's going on? Do story lines carry over into new seasons I guess is what I'm asking.

Thanks!

I think you should be able to start brand new without knowing anyone but Jack. Warning, the show is VERY addictive, and you will curse it every week for leaving a cliffhanger that you have to wait seven days to see resolved. :)

Wikipedia has synopses of all the seasons to date here. It probably wouldn't hurt to read through them before the show starts tonight (90 minutes from now, woohoo!)

from what i've seen, you should be just fine starting fresh with this new season. and, if you have any questions, you belong to the best board on the 'net to ask questions.

enjoy the show, you'll love it!!!

Yes, the story lines do carry over from one season to the next so it would help to be familiar with the previous plot lines. However, each day/season is its own and, while various references will be made perodically to the past, you won't need to know everything (from the past) in order to follow along in the present. However, familiarity with the previous stories will, in fact, help out the viewer. It's not required....but it would be helpful just the same.

In this case, Fred is absolutely right! This is the most addictive show I've ever seen and is the only show I've ever seen that actually gets better and better every year. We cannot wait for it to start again!

edited to add: Yes, you can start with this season, but if you ever have the opportunity to watch the previous seasons I would recommend doing that too.

If push comes to shove, go to netflix or blockbuster (or where ever) and rent the previous 5 seasons so that you can catch up a little bit at a time. Also, go in order by renting (or buying) season #1 first.

Here's my ranking of the previous 5 seasons using the "Five Star" ranking system:

Season #1: 3.75 stars

Season #2: 4 stars

Season #3: 4.5 stars

Season #4: 4.75 stars

Season #5: 4.5 stars

That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it. ;) However, keep in mind that I can be a tough critic at times and certain things (whether big or small) can irritate me (or pleasantly surprise me) and that can greatly effect (fairly or unfairly) how I rate one program or another.

My sis has been watching it for several seasons now, and has talked us inot watching it this season.

She says that each season has had a new story line so far. Some characters may carry over, but many others do not. There are internet sites to look stuff up, I think.

Maybe we should have a discussion thread on this season's shows, the way we did for Jericho?

And as a reminder....we have a chatroom where ppl can fill you in on anything you have a question about. We've even opened a new room #24 to discuss the show. :)

Yes, you can start tonight and plug right into it!

I've watched the first 4 hours of the new season already (Get ready for the five visitors tomorrow night!)

I have to admit . . . I rarely watch any tv at all, but 24 is a very good program.

Thanks for the replies. We're watching. I'm a little lost on the side characters but I'll go to the synopsis pages Fred listed.

Thanks!

What an excellent two hours.

I sure do love the Jack Bauer.

You'd think by now, though, that all the higher ups would KNOW that Jack's right when he calls with new information, yet they never believe him.

24 is the only show I've ever watched that leaves me perched in the edge of my seat, panting with my heart rate ready to tach out by the end of each commercial break and "Wowing" to myself at the end of the show. Makes Jericho look like Captain Kangaroo. Really.

Rent the past seasons - you'll enjoy them and gain a perspective you'd not have otherwise. Chloe is Jack's "go-to" girl, and I love the "Chloe scowl," when others don't understand that Jack doesn't take no for an answer and always finds a way to get 'er done.

Loved David Palmer's character from seasons past, and really enjoy watching him on The Unit - another terrific show, but I probably enjoy that more than others here because of my military service. My First Sgt - Top Odell Berry - had brass balls and made our 2d Cavalry Command Sgt. Major look like Mr. Greenjeans. Also thought that having Wayne Palmer as the new president was a nice touch.

Enjoy!

;) Yep - I definitely enjoyed it. I am going to have to rent the other seasons though. I'll do that when this season is over and "catch up".

I haven't enjoyed a TV show so much since waiting to find out "who shot JR"!

I have to ask this question.

I was wondering this while watching the show last night. With all the "suicide bombings" on the show last night and talk of bombings on buses and subway stations and malls - do you think it's at all possible that the .gov is in some way involved in this show and is conditioning us as to what it will be like if/when this kind of stuff begins to happen?

I know, I know - tin hat pulled on!

It was just a thought I had.

Rent, borrow, buy the previous 5 season DVDs, but be warned...have a day where you have nothing to do to start watching. They are like potato chips....you can't have just one episode. Our record was watching 8 hours straight. We found out we were pikers as I have talked to some who have watched 18 hours, even a whole season in one monsterous sitting.

Last night I said to my wife, "The writers must have some .gov sources". Of course, this is a fictional drama (TV drama at that); they are a bit fuzzy on the details and take a lot of literary license with the situations.

May Not Be Able to Watch ...

WHY ????

Because President Palmer's staff member, 'TOM' is such a freakin little WEASEL already, I'm nearly at point of punching the television whenever he opens his little weasel mouth!!!!! :kk2::bg:

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN JAN 14, 2007 18:17:05 ET XXXXX

IS FOX SET TO BLOW THE NUKES ON '24'?
Sun Jan 14 2007 18:14:34 ET

As Washington continues to raise concerns about terror threats on The Homeland -- a recent CIA report outlined a scenerio of possible "series of explosions using 'low charge' nuclear weapons" -- Hollywood and FOX-TV are set to up the ante with the new season of 24!

Few outside of the 24 set know the exact details of the new season unfolding, but studio sources claim producers are pushing hard to take it radioactive this time -- and keep it there.

"Time to wake the country up!" a top FOX source told the DRUDGE REPORT over the weekend. "I do not think there has ever been TV done like this, the viewer is going to be completely riveted."

The source claims executives are prepared for any fallout from local municipalities that may be on the receiving end of plot turns and twists. How many cities 24 puts on 'nuke alert' is unclear.

FOX has set a highly-controversial espisode of 24 to air Monday night, opposite NBC's GOLDEN GLOBES.

In 2002, White House officials questioned the timing and release of PARAMOUNT's action movie SUM OF ALL FEARS -- a movie which depicts a nuclear bomb unleashed on an American sporting event!

One senior Bush official, who spoke to the DRUDGE REPORT at the time, claimed the movie crossed over the line of civic responsibility and commerce.

Oh goody!! I've been looking for a show to watch since "Firefly" (on DVD cause I don't "do" television). I guess I know what I'm getting now! Thanks guys! (I think)

I watched 24 last night. I didn't especially like the show, but if you want the general story arc, try Wikipedia. That's where I got it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series)

I had a lot of plausibility issues with the show. Just one I'll mention here: you do not keep people like Chloe and Morris(?) around just because you're "short-handed." What they did would get them escorted out the door and possibly thrown in prison. Seriously. I realize they are recurring (and probably popular) characters, but that was SO TV.

On reality issues , sometimes they get it close to right, other times I just have to say oh well it's tv.

As to it being .gov influenced I doubt it Keifer is a lib and there is so much open osurce on this stuff you don't need .gov sources.
