I am a Minuteman working the overnight shift at Three Points, Arizona. When I began my week-long duty, I was on the late day-evening shift. That sets the scene.
On Sunday, we deployed along our line and my partner and I decided to do a little reconnaisance (sp?) along the immigrant trails we would be watching that night. Almost immediately, we found a small, empty backpack. As we continued south a few yards on the trail, we found scattered makeup, such as mascara, lipstick, eyeliner. With a growing sense of unease, we continued south and came upon a blouse, girl's pants, a small, lacy brassiere, an unused sanitary pad, and some girl's panties. We also found a nearly new pair of cute, pink, girl's shoes.
These shoes have bothered me since we found them. I mean, they have really, really bothered me. If I work another daylight shift, I intend to retrieve them (and will post a picture, if I can figure out how).
I will never know who this little (we estimate 11-14 years old from pant, blouse, and shoe size and the need for a sanitary pad) girl is or what happened to cause her obviously prized belongings to be strewn along a God-forsaken path in the Arizona desert. I hope she's alright. I fear she's not.
I don't mean for this to turn into a debate on illegal immigration. I have my opinions and you have yours, but preventing this little girl from brutality like she probably experienced is part of why the Minutemen are doing what we are.
Even though we will never know who she is, or how she's doing, please think of her from time to time and keep her in your prayers.
