Most of the Islamic nations will get a partial eclipse, which literally will make the sun look like a Cresent...

This animation of the upcoming eclipse is awesome; full eclipse viewing is along the red line: http://www.shadowandsubstance.com/

On October 3rd, the moon will glide in front of the sun, producing a solar eclipse visible from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The eclipse won't be total, but rather annular, meaning that the moon won't be big enough to completely cover the sun. Observers along the narrow path of annularity (the red line in the map, below) will see a ring of fire encircling the moon--spectacular! http://www.spaceweather.com/

Here is a pic from the 2003 annular eclipse, showing what the ring of fire around the moon looks like in the region that will view the full eclipse as opposed to the partial cresent...

This image shows how the sun is transformed into the image of a crescent, as it will be visible for the Muslim world on October 3rd...

Those are frightening images! Awesome find. I knew that the circumstances following the eclipse were coming, but I had no clue the eclipse would be so connected to Muslems by the crescent.

Unbelievable. Thanks, DJ.

Data Junkie, thanks for resurrecting the old thread. At the time it was posted, I had no idea that the crescent moon was going to be so prevalent with this eclipse. Again, awesome find.

It makes me wonder if a similar eclipse wasn't where they got their symbol to begin with. Phases of the moon don't really look like their symbol as much as these pictures do.

Thanks Seabird. I find the image haunting, but it hadn't occurred to me that it very well could have inspired the ancients. Jeepers.

Incredible, Penumbra.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't help but feel that those pictures are a warning.

You know, I never thought of that either! It makes perfect sense. The ancients were always big on astronomical events and it's not unlikely at all that the witness of such an event would be immortalized on a religious symbol.

At certain latitudes venus lines up with the moon with the crescent facing sidways and venus fitting inside. It happens perfectly one nihgt about every 8 years, at night every16 years. Venus does a 8 sided starpatter moving in relationship tothe earth as the evening star and morning star needed 16 years to do the whole cycle. Each rising on opposite sides of the sky. That is where the 8 sided star seen in ancient texts comes from. And the beautuful site of the evening star inside the cresent moon is seen in the latitudes of the middle east and mexico I was lucky enough to see it myself theyear my daughter was born. It is a beautiful site.
