" Trust me when I tell you this is the largest sunspot ever recorded, and the largest ever depicted by the solar holgraphy. (see spaceweather.com) It will become visable from Earth in a few days, geoeffective withen 10 days. This Sunspot is bigger by a factor of 4 that the one which unleashed the X-40+ last year. It is very close to the equator of the Sun, making it a potentially geoeefective sunspot.
This could produce a "KILL SHOT" if it hits earth directly."................this is a quote from another poster.................can this post be debunked? If so, proceed.

More from spaceweather.............One of the sunspots is NOAA 720, which was facing Earth on Jan. 20th when it unleashed an X7-class solar flare. The blast sparked bright auroras over Europe and an intense proton storm on the Moon. The other 'spot, denoted above by a question mark, is a newcomer.

Either of these active regions might be responsible for a spate of recent farside explosions. The explosions themselves were not visible from Earth, but the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) they hurled into space were photographed rising over the sun's limb, as shown in this SOHO coronagraph movie captured on February 1st.

The sun's 27-day rotation will soon carry these 'spots around to face Earth. Watch for them emerging over the sun's eastern limb as early as February 6th. ............................Heads up on Feb. 6-7-8............also on 14th and 15th of Feb.

Solar Activity Disrupts Radio Communication and Crashes Satellites

February 3, 2005
Pravda

Powerful bursts on the Sun have become quite frequent lately. Planet Earth was seized with a strong magnetic storm several days ago, which measured almost the maximum on the 0-9 scale. Proton currents were especially intensive in the European part of Russia. Common people´s interest in the solar activity is not limited to the desire of having a good tan. The activity of the Sun may result in bad health, headaches, and blood pressure surges. It may also disrupt radio and satellite communication, or lead to technical malfunctions in the work of devices possessing strong electromagnetic fields.

Magnetic storms usually cause a lot of trouble to people. Such days are especially dangerous to those, who suffer from cardiovascular diseases. Flying control officers, drivers and operators experience a lower reaction during magnetic storms. The amplitude of magnetic fluctuations increases from southern latitudes to northern ones. In Russia, railway accidents, for example, are more frequent in northern territories. Athletes are subjected to traumas during magnetic storms. Artists probably make the only group of people, who treat magnetic storms with sympathy. Magnetic storms are visible in the north, in the form of beautiful Aurora Borealis, or northern lights.

A magnetic storm left the Canadian capital, Ottawa, without electricity for eight hours in 1989. A solar storm put the TV satellite Telstar 401 (owned by AT&T) out of order in 1997. Galaxy IV satellite was damaged with a magnetic storm the next year - the satellite was operating ATM machines and aviation tracking systems. The solar storm ruined the Japanese satellite Asko, which fell down and sank in the Pacific Ocean. Magnetic storms affect the work of cellular communication too; they cause damage to the work of the Internet, automatic systems, disturb high-frequency radio communication and so on and so forth.

About 500 magnetic storms occur during the eleven-year solar cycle. The phenomenon is very important for science, although it is quite unpleasant for the majority of people. Magnetic storms are very helpful in the study of plasma qualities, for instance. Plasma, as a state of substance, has rather large perspectives in the future - it might become the basis of the energy industry. Four spacecrafts explore the phenomenon of solar activity nowadays. Russia launched its satellite, Koronas-F, in 2001. For the time being, it is the only Russian scientific satellite in space. The technical level of the Russian satellite is comparable to the one of the Japanese spacecraft. Two other solar crafts were launched by the USA and Europe. Scientific forecasts about the solar activity, forthcoming magnetic storms and the state of the Earth´s atmosphere are highly important for the control of the Russian orbital station. Those data were also used for sinking the Mir space station - it was necessary to make the spacecraft fall down in a specific area of the Pacific Ocean.

Members of the presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences gathered for a special session last week. The meeting was devoted to recent global natural phenomena. Vladimir Kuznetsov, the director of the Earth Magnetism Institute, presented a report about the work of Koronas-F satellite during the session. According to Kuznetsov, a space observatory received about a million of solar X-ray solar spectrums, over 300 thousand high-resolution X-ray images of the Sun, numerous time profiles, new data about the currents of solar space rays and the ultraviolet solar radiation. "Magnetic storms provide our institute with a lot of valuable information. However, I personally suffer from these storms like anyone else," the scientist said.

Another specialist of the above-mentioned institute, Vladimir Obridko, said that the solar activity would be decreasing in the beginning of the century. The activity of the Sun will drop by 20 percent. Global warming theories may face an unexpected obstacle in the form of the lazy star. The solar activity will be minimal in 2007, when the Kyoto Protocol is in effect. The humanity will witness the collision of two global processes: the greenhouse effect and the colder Sun.

Several cycles of the solar activity - 11-, 22-, 100-, 400- and 900-year cycles - will coincide in the beginning of the century. It is hard to make a precise forecast because of the lack of information about the solar radiation. Humans still do not know much about the Sun, although it is possible to say now that the Sun will cause a mess on Earth in the near future.

Dames' Killshot Prediction and other earth changes made in 2003

Ed Dames
According to reports the biggest solar flare ever almost shut down the entire Earth in November. Dames claims this is the shot across the bow before the kill shot.
In October 2003 Dames predicted the Sun would go on a rampage. What he failed to mention is that in his very same prediction he said that the solar flare would signal the end of World War III and that the poles would shift 17 degrees. This is a totally different solar event but he keeps claiming it as a hit.

The next use of a nuclear weapon will be on the North Korean peninsular. The nuclear weapon is in place. It is like a nuclear mine and will be detonated if the US troops invade. Once this escalates into a nuclear conflict the whole World will come together to stop this war.

The nuclear cloud will drift over China.

This nuclear event is only small compared to what is about to happen.

Coming global super storm to start this year. Ohio will be hit by a huge tornado.

The massive event Dames talks about is the kill shot, not one but a series of huge solar flares. All satellites and power grids will be destroyed. People living in big cities are in serious trouble.

The trigger for this event is when we see a space shuttle forced to land because of a meteor shower. This is the harbinger. The beginning of the end. Once the space shuttle is forced to land it will only be a couple of months before the start of the disaster. The space shuttles are still grounded but the flights resume in early 2005.

We will see some drastic geo-physical changes in the Earth, eventually resulting in a wobble and possibly a pole shift. The wobble will cause waves as high as 2,000 feet. This wobble is caused by the rapid melting of ice because the planet has been heated up so much.

2005 will see a tremendous amount of worldwide earthquakes, followed by intense meteor showers. Not like the Leonids, these will actually hit the Earth.

Around the same time as the kill shot a large planetary body will pass by the Earth, go around the Sun and pass by us again. This could be Planet X and will be the size of Pluto. We will have 3 months warning of its approach.

The combination of both events will kill around 2 billion people. A further 2 billion people could die because of the after effects.

We will experience winds of 300 mph for a few weeks so we will need to be below ground with a supply of fresh water and food. To be safe you will need to be far inland or very high up, around 3,000 feet above sea level or own your own very large sail boat. Safe places are west of Glacier National Park, east of British Columbia, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Once the Earth settles there will be lots of broken nuclear reactors with radiation clouds everywhere.

We will rebuild and he suspects this is not the first time this has happened. The nations that are survivable are the ones that do not rely heavily on high technology. China is poise to become the top nation.

Many people will start to experience these events in dreams as the time draws closer.

Regardless if this one fires off directly, it could kill us firing off indirectly.

The one that caused the X40 Plus was almost out of view.
Personally, I think we may be screwed.

I give this one a 30% SHTF rating and thats the highest I ever rated anything.

I presume any self-respecting TB2Ker who would post "trust me when I tell you this is the largest sunspot ever recorded" has access to records of all observed sunspost with which to compare. Perhaps s/he will be kind enough to post them, or at least a link. Certainly Spaceweather doesn't make that claim. Indeed--I don't even find them as the source for that "factor of 4" remark.

Frankly, I'm not even sure how sunsposts are measured.

Whether or not it "kills" us, it should prove interesting. It has been a long time since I've seen a sunspot with the unaided eye. Perhaps this one will do it. If it's big enough, perhaps it will significantly reduce the amount of heat and light put out by the sun. However, sunspots are not really black. They just appear such in comparison with the brighter and hotter surface around it. I suspect--mere speculation here--that if a sunspot covered the entire hemisphere facing us, it may not look particularly awsome at all.

Maybe the sun will give birth to a new planet. We can call it planet X--or is that one taken?

I've become rather bored with all the sunspot stuff. I understand there is real danger, but.... if this one were to "nail" us, what would we lose? All the satelites? Permanently? No doubt that would be enough to collapse the economy and throw civilization into chaos and war. Too bad they're a day late and a dollar short on those communication blimps. Those could be replaced much easier and cheaper than satelites...and quicker.

I was thinking about that a few years ago and was wondering if that would be what will cause the sackcloth look mentioned in Revelations. It would probably let enough of the 690-1400nM spectrum through to make the moon go deep crimson as well. Oh well, just thinking...

And I also feel the same way a few others do here, in that the suns activity directly affects our seismic/volcano activity in both the near future as well as a cumulative long term future issue.

Back in the 60's, Louis Rubin (here in Richmond) was able to come up with long range very accurate forcasts of the weather (months in advance, accurate to the day!). He used solar, seismic, and volcanic information as the input data for his equations. There is a link in there somewhere.

Actually, I was thinking along the same lines when I wrote what I said above. My dad, a life-long student of the prophecies always maintained that the black sun and red moon had to be simultaneous to be a fulfillment of the prophecy (since the sun is black every total eclipse and the moon red every one of its total eclipses). It is physically impossible for there to be a simultaneous solar total eclipse and total lunar eclipse. So, if dad was right, it would have to be a special thing indeed.

Now, as explained to me, the red of a lunar eclipse is caused by light rays passing through the earth's atmosphere and projected onto the moon. So, I don't know whether a massive sun spot would do it--at least not the same way. Dad always figured a massive dust cloud in the solar system, in between the sun and the earth-moon.

I know nothing about the future, and make no claim about it. But, I promise you I will sit up and take note when the moon turns red and the sun black AT THE SAME TIME. Until then, everything is just part of the show and I don't get too excited about any of it.

I don't think some of you here get what this is. Knocking out sats is the least of our worries. If this thing fires off in our direction, it will not only toast satelites, but it probably toast the entire grid...on the entire planet. Besides that, people should stay indoors as well.

If the grid were to go down in that manner, I give nuclear reactors one month before they start to come apart. Reactors depend on the grid to keep them cool. No grid, no cooling pumps. When the grid fails, a GM diesel generator takes over the power for the cooling pump. Yes, there is one more backup for that (another GM diesel generator) but the problem is fuel. There is only 7 days fuel at each reactor. This means that fuel would need to be flown in daily....with no grid. (Kind of tough to pump fuel with no electricity). If it happens in Feb, Northern states are screwed because many diesel trucks need to stay plugged all night just so they start in the morning. I can go on for an hour how it may play out. People would be much more concerned with getting food/staying warm then pumping fuel.

When it swings around we can tell how dangerous it is by how dark it is. What has me concerned is what the heck keeps creating sunspots on the BACK SIDE?

We will be in the kill zone starting Sat and ending in 10 days.

I suggest prayers.

If it is as big and bold as described, you won't only be able to see it, it will be darker out (similar to a small eclipse).

Not to mention what could happen if plasma actually "hits the deck" (which is what I think Dames means in his prognostications). We would be crispy critters. One of the things he talked about was that the air (oxygen) would be pretty much "gone". People in low places would be able to live, in a small way, in caves where some oxy was still at. I cant think of anything else that would fry the air like that except for a head on plasma stream actually hitting the planet.

I think I'm going to shriek like a girl like MarkD did. And then pray.

Who cares about some X-40?

You can't move the sun, you can't move the earth out of its orbit, and you can't put up a large umbrella lined with tin foil in orbit to protect satellites.

Higher than that and everyone is going to die anyway unless you wear about 10,000 sunblock because the ozone layer would be stripped off and the Van Allen Belts would be disrupted. UV and heat would flood the surface of the earth.

Those who are lucky enough to be inside would get scorched when they went out. the strong UV would degrade any structure or protection on the surface. Anyway, almost all the life on earth would die in a few weeks anyway except for some life in the deep ocean and some bacteria in caves.

Go worry about and prepare for something which you CAN survive. A large "Kill shot" isn't one of them. (Unless you are looking for a signal to say a quick prayer.)

Sickening Solar Flares

The biggest solar proton storm in 15 years erupted last week. NASA researchers discuss what it might have done to someone on the Moon.

January 27, 2005: NASA is returning to the Moon--not just robots, but people. In the decades ahead we can expect to see habitats, greenhouses and power stations up there. Astronauts will be out among the moondust and craters, exploring, prospecting, building.

Last week, though, there were no humans walking around on the Moon.

Good thing.

On January 20th, 2005, a giant sunspot named "NOAA 720" exploded. The blast sparked an X-class solar flare, the most powerful kind, and hurled a billion-ton cloud of electrified gas (a "coronal mass ejection") into space. Solar protons accelerated to nearly light speed by the explosion reached the Earth-Moon system minutes after the flare--the beginning of a days-long "proton storm."

Here on Earth, no one suffered. Our planet's thick atmosphere and magnetic field protects us from protons and other forms of solar radiation. In fact, the storm was good. When the plodding coronal mass ejection arrived 36 hours later and hit Earth's magnetic field, sky watchers in Europe saw the brightest and prettiest auroras in years: gallery.

The Moon is a different story.

"The Moon is totally exposed to solar flares," explains solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center. "It has no atmosphere or magnetic field to deflect radiation." Protons rushing at the Moon simply hit the ground--or whoever might be walking around outside.

The Jan. 20th proton storm was by some measures the biggest since 1989. It was particularly rich in high-speed protons packing more than 100 million electron volts (100 MeV) of energy. Such protons can burrow through 11 centimeters of water. A thin-skinned spacesuit would have offered little resistance.

"An astronaut caught outside when the storm hit would've gotten sick," says Francis Cucinotta, NASA's radiation health officer at the Johnson Space Center. At first, he'd feel fine, but a few days later symptoms of radiation sickness would appear: vomiting, fatigue, low blood counts. These symptoms might persist for days.

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), by the way, were safe. The ISS is heavily shielded, plus the station orbits Earth inside our planet's protective magnetic field. "The crew probably absorbed no more than 1 rem," says Cucinotta.

One rem, short for Roentgen Equivalent Man, is the radiation dose that causes the same injury to human tissue as 1 roentgen of x-rays. A typical dental x-ray, for example, delivers about 0.1 rem. So, for the crew of the ISS, the Jan. 20th proton storm was like 10 trips to the dentist--scary, but no harm done.

On the Moon, Cucinotta estimates, an astronaut protected by no more than a space suit would have absorbed about 50 rem of ionizing radiation. That's enough to cause radiation sickness. "But it would not have been fatal," he adds.

To die, you'd need to absorb, suddenly, 300 rem or more.

The key word is suddenly. You can get 300 rem spread out over a number of days or weeks with little effect. Spreading the dose gives the body time to repair and replace its own damaged cells. But if that 300 rem comes all at once ... "we estimate that 50% of people exposed would die within 60 days without medical care," says Cucinotta.

Such doses from a solar flare are possible. To wit: the legendary solar storm of August 1972.

It's legendary (at NASA) because it happened during the Apollo program when astronauts were going back and forth to the Moon regularly. At the time, the crew of Apollo 16 had just returned to Earth in April while the crew of Apollo 17 was preparing for a moon-landing in December. Luckily, everyone was safely on Earth when the sun went haywire.

"A large sunspot appeared on August 2, 1972, and for the next 10 days it erupted again and again," recalls Hathaway. The spate of explosions caused, "a proton storm much worse than the one we've just experienced," adds Cucinotta. Researchers have been studying it ever since.

Cucinotta estimates that a moonwalker caught in the August 1972 storm might have absorbed 400 rem. Deadly? "Not necessarily," he says. A quick trip back to Earth for medical care could have saved the hypothetical astronaut's life.

Surely, though, no astronaut is going to walk around on the Moon when there's a giant sunspot threatening to explode. "They're going to stay inside their spaceship (or habitat)," says Cucinotta. An Apollo command module with its aluminum hull would have attenuated the 1972 storm from 400 rem to less than 35 rem at the astronaut's blood-forming organs. That's the difference between needing a bone marrow transplant … or just a headache pill.

Modern spaceships are even safer. "We measure the shielding of our ships in units of areal density--or grams per centimeter-squared," says Cucinotta. Big numbers, which represent thick hulls, are better:

The hull of an Apollo command module rated 7 to 8 g/cm2.

A modern space shuttle has 10 to 11 g/cm2.

The hull of the ISS, in its most heavily shielded areas, has 15 g/cm2.

Future moonbases will have storm shelters made of polyethelene and aluminum possibly exceeding 20 g/cm2.

A typical space suit, meanwhile, has only 0.25 g/cm2, offering little protection. "That's why you want to be indoors when the proton storm hits," says Cucinotta.

But the Moon beckons and when explorers get there they're not going to want to stay indoors. A simple precaution: Like explorers on Earth, they can check the weather forecast--the space weather forecast. Are there any big 'spots on the sun? What's the chance of a proton storm? Is a coronal mass ejection coming?

All clear? It's time to step out.

Ummm....How about NO vehicles working at all. A large flare/CME would produce an EMP. For you fuel trucks: no unfried wires, no battery. As for the grid, imagine most of the telephone and power lines surging and bursting into flames. The electromagnetic effect would be terra-frying enough.

There are several possibilites concerning the lack of info on the Stanford
site.

The first could be a malfunction of the equipment scanning the sun.

The second could be sloppy reporting.

The third could be the fact that this baby is sooooooo big they don't
want anyone to freak out.
..............I'm very convinced that when the 'big one' does
hit, we'll be the last to know.

Doc, I think the spot 720 is still there. It was here 2 weeks ago and is swinging back around. The new one is next to it.

Reliability?

Hehehe....

This is what caught my eye regarding EQs and Sun monitoring. Lots of 'fishy' things happen at critical times. Why? Who knows but I seen it all including large EQs vanishing as well as large solar events.

Theres no hiding this one if it is as big as some say. You will be able to see it with the naked eye and 3 pairs of sunglasses....easy.

Take about 5 - 10 strips of 35mm film negatives. Put 'em on top of each other and you have yourself makeshift welding glasses. I've been looking at sunspots using this method for years. And I'm just fine

Go worry about and prepare for something which you CAN survive. A large "Kill shot" isn't one of them. (Unless you are looking for a signal to say a quick prayer.)

Revelation 16:8 - The fourth angel poured his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch men with fire; :)

new flare?

http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/realtime-c3.html

Sorry don't know how to post the pic,
the latest LASCO C3 images show a solid white flare from probably sunspot 720, as that has just started to become visible. The flares usually show up as cloudy looking bursts, and this link shows something solid white??

 Input please - or am I totally off base here? The solid white spot looks freaky and intense, or maybe I haven't been watching these things long enough.

This map shows 720 back in view, but info doesn't look as current as LASCO.
